I took Eggo, my African Pancake Tortoise outside today for a romp in the grass and of course a little snacking... this is the first time I've posted pictures of her (sex is not actually known yet, but she SHOULD be a girl) because all my previous ones are utter crap. :D She is, oh, let's see... 5 years old. Still growing! They grow slowly. And I will admit now I didn't give her a great diet at first. She's really taken off in the last couple years, after I worked out a doable food/water schedule. Some folks only water their pancakes twice a month! Max size is 6" so a small turtle anyway.

Tada! Beautiful girl!

Close-up of the shell. She has some slight pyramiding (doh!) but the scute outlines are actually normal of the species - she was outlined when I got her, not long after she hatched.

Eyeing the grass. I do actually have a video of her eating it.. I'm just lazy.

A size comparison. When I got her, she was about the size of a fifty cent piece... shipped overnight through the USPS no less ;) Oh, the things we spend our tax refunds on...

Hewwo.

Ack this isn't normal! Prepare for pooping!

Yeah, she lightened herself a bit after that one...

Pancakes are neat because they climb, they're mountain tortoises. She has all sorts of cliffs and caves in her house. If she falls on her back every so often, she flips herself back over. If she's in a cave, it's REALLY hard to get her out - they dig in with those massive front legs against both sides of the rock, and they also inflate themselves so they're nearly impossible to get out. Cool defensive mechanism!

She's gorgeous!

Do you have a pic of her enclosure to share? I'm interested!

Not gonna lie...I expected to see pictures of a pancake shaped like a tortoise, not an actual live animal. :rofl1: I'm such a dork. She is beautiful and sounds like an very neat creature.

PW - I'll have to take one... I had one of her old house somewhere, it was AWESOME - I actually had a "meadow" in there where I grew grass so she could eat whenever she wanted. Of course I can't find it, and don't have a pic of her current one ATM.

corgi - she should get roughly 6"... she's about 4" (a bit less?) right now.

a.baker - they live in Tanzania/Kenya.

Oh, forgot to mention - their bottom shell is SQUISHY! :D
