Ok, I know this is going to probably sound dumb but if your dog keeps you awake at night and doesn't sleep excessively through the day, maybe it has something to do with the dark. Maybe a night light would help relax her. Just a suggestion. I'm probably wrong.

teefae, from what I have read it seems that the biggest point that alot are trying to get across is crate training. I have crate trained my pups from day 1 and they sleep there at night. I have 2 big dogs a pit and a siberian husky and when they are together it is indeed a day at the races through my house and you can only imagine the damage those 2 could do.

Disiplining a animal is really a hard task, they are like little kids and will test you and keep on testing you. I have on occassions swatted my pups and yes may feel bad afterwards but sometimes you do what you feel you need to. There are a great many people here who dont agree with swatting at an animal (I like the word swat opposed to hit) then there are those who agree that maybe there is a time for it. Remember, you are the ALPHA :) and the rules are the rules. Seperating the 2 dogs during treat time for a bit might not be a bad idea. Sounds like the yorkie likes to rule the roost so to speak.

Try the crate at night. You need your sleep also. If you dont get it you may find yourself stressed out to the point and wanting to remove the animals (I really dont think from your post that it would happen) but none the less you need your sleep as much as your pups

Hitting, swatting....call it whatever you want. To a dog's way of thinking, it's an attack on them. It puts them on the defensive and teaches them nothing but to distrust you. It causes all kinds of behavioral and emotional problems, anywhere from distrustfulness, shyness, fearfulness, inability to focus and learn to aggression. People wonder why dogs bite them or others. This is one reason. There ARE ways to train a dog which do not include hitting, swatting or any other form of harsh mistreatment. All that does is serves to be an outlet for an owners lack of self control and a punching bag to take out frustrations. It is a responsibility when one has animals to learn how to train them and how to treat them...and self control is part of that. There is NEVER a good reason to hit a dog.

Actually someone got a good point also.

My dogs are the same way, in the morning they will jump on me and ask for attention. The thing is, if you totally ignore them, they will stop and go bad to sleep on their bed after 5 minutes.

Have you tried just ignoring her? If you hide under the covers when she does it and pay NO attention to her, she should get the message that you're not in the mood for cuddles. Try it, and if it still doesn't work in a week definitely get a crate.

Doberluv-I wasnt trying to attack anyones view on this-trying to answer the post with the least negativity since I believe this was the first post this person posted and yes opinions on hitting swatting etc I think were a bit harsh for this person since I think it was her first time here. We try to make those who come here welcome and I feel that she probably felt attacked, thats all wasnt dogging anyones views.

My pooch does this to me. He generally tries to be an alarm clock an hour before i am scheduled to get up. He does this every day without fail. Generally he's able to wake me -- BUT -- i also ignore him and turn over. He shuts up then... doesnt' keep him from trying the next day though.

I am going to interject something here. (I am new but I happened upon this forum on just this topic because as I will explain, I sort of have the same problem with mine) It is what brought me here.
Maybe. . . . (and I didn't read all of the answers) maybe she just wants to be with YOU. What we do with our dog(s) is we usually allow them on the bed. . . they tend to move on their own once we get comfortable because our feet keep "kicking them". So they move to the floor. We have given them their own pillows and blankets to sleep on. Our Border collie (Molly) LOVES body pillows! But we have this ritual before bed too. We CUDDLE! Sounds simple. . . we just snuggle her until it's "Lights Out". Sometimes she stays on the bed. . . but she eventually does move to the floor. When we say Lights Out, she gets off the bed to her place on the floor. She has about 4 places around the house that she sleeps. She has full run of the house during the night. We don't crate although a lot of dogs like to be crated (I know Huskys do) . . .but I just feel like that's cruel and I would never do it personally. It doesn't mean it's wrong. It's just wrong for ME. We have no problem with her waking us up until we are supposed to get up! She is the furry alarm clock. If we aren't up by a certain time. . . she won't leave us alone until we are up and out of bed. No sleeping in for us. Our problem? We can't take a nap! For example. . . I went to lay down just today around 3:30 and after about 20 minutes. . . she in the bed with me whining, pawing at me. . . she even got up ON MY PILLOW and pawed my head! It was like "MOM! get up. You aren't supposed to be sleeping now, you're supposed to making dinner!" But she will do it to my husband too when he takes naps on the weekend. Not sure why. . . maybe it is just that. We don't belong in bed sleeping until it's night time.

Anyway. . . maybe you could start a loving bedtime ritual with your dog. Let her sleep with you either on the bed or on the floor. Give her a blanket and pillow to lay on next to you. She may need the comfort of you next to her or nearby. A crate may only make the separation worse. Ever heard of separation anxiety? We had several fosters like that. All they needed was some TLC. Also . . how much time do you spend with her the rest of the day? If you work and are never home. . . it may be that too. You need to make her know that you are there for her.
Ok. . that's it from the new girl. I hope that helps

New girl back again. . . I have swatted Molly on the nose (not hard) when she does her growly growl and raises her lip and snaps at my daughters face (don't worry she is 20 years old), and she does it almost every night while we snuggle. Maybe she thinks she is trying to "kiss" my daughters face because that's what we do to her!
However. . . even Wolves discipline the pack. . . . there's nothing wrong with occasional light smack. I don't condone actually hitting or beating an animal (and I am sure I will get someone who will think I do. . . . and I will get laid into for it. . . but again. . . my opinion. . .. we are all entitled.).
I have to say that we got lucky with our Husky. She was unlike any other . . . I don't think we could handle a REAL Husky. We got the Queen of all Huskys. . . .may she ret in peace.)
