Hi Everyone,

I came across this Forum and wanted to reach out for some help and advice. Last week, on Memorial Day, I lost my beautiful Labrador, Liberty. I have had her since she was about one year old and she has been a part of my life until now. I also have two more dogs, Charly, a 7 year old Australian Shepherd/pit mix who I rescued from the SPCA in 2008 and BoDuke, a Black Mouth Cur who I found dumped in the woods about a year and a half ago, he is estimated to be just over over 2 years old now.
Charly and Liberty grew up together and have never been separated, They have always been very close. Since Bo has been a part of our family, he was also very close to her. This past week week has been incredibly hard on us and we are doing our very best to adjust and remaining strong. I don't have children and my animals are my world.
Since we had to say Good Bye to our girl, Charly has been very depressed. He has improved a little over the weekend but I know he is still very sad and not himself. I know dogs grieve and all I can do is give him time to get better, but in the meantime, I want to do everything possible to make it as easy on him as possible. He did get the chance to say good bye to her. About a day or two after, the stress seemed to have caught with him. He had a hard time keeping his food down, did not want to go outside and just lost his excitement overall. He has been on a very easy diet, I add organic pumpkin and some plain greek yoghurt to his meals which seems to help keep his food down. He is also going potty as normal.
I have been keeping his routine as normal as possible, we go to the field to run daily, we play at the barn (I have a horse as well) and remain very active. Since he has had trouble with his appetite, I am not letting run as much as usual, since I don't want him to get ill. My vet is also aware of his behavior and we suspect him going through a severe case of depression as well. He is a little sensitive boy in the first place so this has just really worn him down. Bo on the other hand, is not showing any signs of depression. I can imagine he is sad as well, I of course love him just as much, but I am looking for advice to help my little Charly through this.
If anyone has been through the same situation and has some advice for us, please let me know. This was my first time going through this type of heartbreak, so any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

I wouldn't decrease his exercise or limit how much he runs. That could cause a cycle to continue to decrease his appetite and could further depress him. Running might stimulate his appetite, and if he's too sick to run around, he won't.

Orange oil is a natural appetite stimulant, so putting a drop of (diluted) orange essential oil on the pads of his back feet, or using a spray on his bedding or burning it in your home may help (I'm only suggesting this because I just took a course on the use of aromatherapy in animal behavior). It's also a natural mood booster/antidepressant for humans, so it might help there.

I think if you continue to do what you're doing, he will move past his grief. Keep him active, reassure him, keep the routine as normal as possible.

If he continues to vomit or refuses to eat, or acts lethargic, I would have further vet work (blood work) done.

We had a similar experience. We wound up getting another dog and our other dog perked up and felt happy again.

The space is vacant and you probably fill that "space" with a new puppy. Your dog will be-friend with this new puppy and will not be sad. Take care of your dog! They are the man's best friends.
