What is the best thing for keeping mosquitos away, when you have a cookout or something like that? I have seen those OFF lanterns, but what else is out there that works pretty good. I don't like the messy candles, bc we have already had an incident where we forgot about one and it melted in the sun and got all over my deck. Is there anything else?

Probably just wearing light colored clothing and using insect repellent on yourself works best. I've yet to see any sort of area repellent that really worked.

Oh, and put up some swallow houses and even bat houses.

Don't laugh, in the Army some guys used to put fabric softener sheets under their head gear to help keep the mosquitos at bay.

There's also mosquito coils that you can buy. They work pretty well. When I camping or have cookouts I use 4 coils and put one on each side of the deck or campsite.

If you are willing to spend the money, we've had great luck with the Mosquito Magnet. With three ponds and a lot of standing water on the barn's property, I hardly ever see mosquitos near the barn (where the magnet runs).

wow.. I am going to try the dryer sheet thing.

We have a small cabin up in the woods in Wisconsin and the misquito's are HUGE there and there are a TON of them. Since there isnt running water we always take Baby wipes to wash up with and something about them attracts Misquitos. I think we will just start stashing fabric sheets in our pockets :)

Dryer sheets are also the time-honored way to keep rodents out of tack trunks in the barn. I'm starting to wonder what is in those things:confused: .
