Last night while playing with my daughter and husband, Max landed wrong and immediately started yelping and holding his foot up.

I ran over to him to see what happened. The joint on his front right paw (on the inside where his ankle is?) is swollen and he is limping badly. He will let me touch it and move it without showing any discomfort. By the end of the evening he would put a little weight on it occassionally, but this morning he is still favoring it.

He is still eating, playing, etc. Is it sprained or could it be something worse?

If Max was my dog, I would give a call to the vet and see if you can get him in to check it out.

He needs to be taken into the vet clinic..

He could have broken something, it could be a sprain, he could have also torn his ligaments.

only the vet can tell for sure what it is.

you need to take him in and at least get some pain meds for him if its bothering him that much.

he needs to have seen a vet already.

when my dog broke her leg we ran straight to the vet... no stops in between... the vet said a lot of people try not to bring in their pets and it only causes worse injuries over time.

Please get him to a vet and then update us on him.

I have an appointment to bring him to the local vet at 2:20 pm today. I'll let you know what they say.

sounds like a sprain to me. WHen my Bronki was a puppy he broke the long bone on the top of his front paw. It was a snowstorm and we hurried out to unshovel the car, the vet office was closing in 15 minutes. I had already called him and asked him to stay just 15 more minutes we were on our way. THe first thing he did was pick up Bronki's unhurt foot to see if he would set the injured one down. THe answer to that was no...not for love nor money was he putting that paw down. WHen Vic got stung or bit by whatever it was the people at the guild said RUN HIM TO THE VET! I said we will wait a bit first and see. I got him home removed the stinger or fang, i never could tell the difference and he was just fine. You have to make that call yourself, but if it helps to know that my dog wouldn't put his foot down when it was truly broken, then that is all i know to say.

UPDATE~

Max has a slight dislocation in his right foot. The Vet said that it definately isn't fractured, and he wouldn't call it a sprain. The xray's showed that the middle little long bone (sorry I don't know the techincal term) in his "wrist" was shifted slightly.

He is currently in a splint for 2-3 weeks and should be fine. He may have a little arthritis at some point, but we are hopeful that since he is still so young that it won't have any effect.

aww... your little boy looks like a trooper... my Bella broke her leg when she was only about 9 weeks old and today you wouldnt even know it... puppies heal very quickly... within a couple days of getting her cast on which was a back leg wrapped all the way from top to bottom, she was throwing that leg out and running around like nothing happened... you may notice when he gets the splint off that he holds the foot up like it is hurt but he will just be used to holding it up and he will stop over time.

Glad it wasnt too serious.
