After reading GoingNowhere's story about three lost dogs prompt me to ask: Did you ever lose your dog? It happened to me only once. I was out bowling when I got a call from my sister saying Apollo ran away. It seems when my grandparents came back from the grocery store, Apollo ran out the door my grandparents left open. When I got home, I got upset with my grandparents for leaving the door open. We left the door open in case Apollo returned. Then I called the radio stations and the police station reporting a lost dog. I don't know why, but I did not leave the house to look for Apollo. I must have been to shaken up. Anyway I did not know what to do. After what seemed like ages, all of a sudden Apollo came running up the stairs. I was so happy to see her, I gave her a hug and did not scold her for running away. It seems Apollo got together with Whiskers, a dog who lived across the street and they went bumming around the neighborhood together. I was very happy Apollo made it back home. I knew I could not live without her. Apollo meant so much to me, I would risk my life for her. It was a lucky thing I never got married because I would have chosen Apollo over her.

Glad to hear Apollo came back and lived a nice long life with you.

The one and only time this happened was with Boomer and it was about 7 months ago. He got out of our fenced in yard, one of the fence boards fell which we only found out later. I thought he was in the house with me the entire time but I didn't realize he was outside. Hubby had the basement door open and Boomer managed to get down there and out into the yard and out the fence. Found out about 15 to 30 minutes later that he had gotten out. I ran down the neighborhood street yelling his name which caught my neighbors attention so they decided to help. From one of my neighbors great Sherlock instinct, he was able to find out that Boomer was picked up by someone visiting a resident living in an apartment not too far and they decided to bring him along, heading back home a few states away. We were able to find out who these people were visiting and got them to call them on their cellphone and bring back Boomer. Scary how many times I keep telling myself "what if". Since then Boomer wears his ID collar 24/7 and got microchiped.

When i was in highschool i lost my childhood pet. SHe was very old and it broke my heart. I flunked a class for the first time in my life. I could not concentrate. We put up signs, ads in the paper, door to door. THere was an accident at the time i lost her, i am sure she caused it. I searched forever but never found her. For 12 years she had slept beside me. I dont' think there is anything worse then lost. Even tho i know she is dead 3 times over in lifespan, i still look at the spot where i lost her and hope.

Only for about a two minutes. It was night time and Ciana was still a young puppy. I was walking both, but Ciana was being a pain in the butt. So, I let Doerak off leash because he was such a good dog. Bratty Ciana was getting tangled in something. When I looked back up Doerak was gone! Of course, black dogs are hard to find in the dark in the first place.

I called his name a couple of times and started getting nervous walking along looking for him. Suddenly, he ran up behind me all happy and grinning big. All I can guess was it was a cat or a rabbit that distracted him and he ran into somebody's large 4 acre weedly lot chasing it. I thought my heart was going to stop.

None of my dogs would ever run away intentionally, but I worry that somebody would steal them, especially Balto.

Funny story. One day after work I fell asleep on the sofa for a few, maybe 10, minutes. The dogs were in the small part of the yard and could come and go through the screen door that Balto was kind enough to detach the screen at the bottom.

I woke up to the sound of the doorbell ringing and dogs barking. I get up to go outside and tell the dogs to be quiet, but they weren't there. I checked the gate and it was latched, but outside the fenced area, in the front corner part of the yard (I'm on a corner), I see Ciana standing there barking up a storm. Balto had crossed the street to greet a woman walking her puppy. Ciana was telling the puppy to get away and Balto to come back (I imagine).

I called Balto and he came back. I got the dogs in the yard and went to the other gate that I never use. Yep, somebody must have been in my yard and didn't latch the gate properly because it was open just enough for the dogs to get out. Now that gate has a padlock on it. I really wish I knew why anybody would be in my yard when I'm not home.
