Logic vs gut feeling

A good friend of mine has 4 malinois . one a national champ in French and mondio ring. Another titled in mondio and two females. She got a papillion and he fits in perfectly :)

Figure out what YOU want and go from there.

Gut tells you what you want, logic helps you make it happen.

If I went logic over gut I wouldn't have Badger. And that would be a terrible thing. You'll have plenty of time in life to have another sheltie, so go with what you want.

So did I and for like 6 years I managed to keep it that way! But then the Rigby happened...then Ruby happened.

:dunno: if I went logic over gut, Rigby probably wouldn't be alive right now, and Ruby would still be in a home where she got no exercise, no training, and chewed door frames.


Anyways, I feel you can still combine gut and logic here. Sure Shelties fit your wants/needs in a dog, but they're not the *only* good fit for you.
So gut does cross them off the list for now, but logic can bring in a whole new breed?
 
I don't think it is nearly as cut and dry as "Logic = sheltie, gut = OtherDog". I don't think I've seen a single post from you about getting another dog that didn't include a lot of logic supporting the breeds you were considering. Just because other people think a sheltie is right doesn't mean it is the only logical choice.

Get what you want. The posts from people who regret choosing the dog they did, or got the dog they thought they should but aren't happy about, are some of the saddest on the forum to me. Sad for the dog, sad for the owner. This is your dog. Get what is going to make you happy. I fully believe that you will be successful with what you chose.
 
I have to echo everyone elses sentiments. You're a pretty sensible person and you're the one who has to live with the dog. Everyone is going to have an opinion.
 
Gut. If I had listened to "logic" I would've gotten a Beagle or Pointer and I'd've been miserable. Gut brought me to my little tornado, and I couldn't be happier.
 
I think it has to be a combination of the two. Logically, it has to fit somewhat into your life or I think you'll be miserable in the long run. Having said that, I think the best connections are with breeds that you are just drawn too.

Our shih tzu delights me on a daily basis. Her attitude and personality are hilarious. I was drawn to the breed, with good reason :)
 
I would let logic determine your choices and let your gut make your final pick.

Namely, use logic to narrow your search down to dogs that might be good fits for you. Then go with your gut to decide.

I am sure that there are PLENTY of other dog breeds that would logically fit your "wants" list. Once you have a decent list of those, why not pick the breed that you just have an inkling towards?

FWIW: Shelties might be a perfect fit for you. That doesn't mean that a(n) [insert other breed here] isn't. They don't have to be mutually exclusive.
 
I'm a gut + logic person. When I was picking a breed I sat down and made a list of dogs who would work well in my home. After that, it was down to gut feeling on which dog I was most drawn to physically and personality-wise.

In your case, I think you have the logic down, and you have a list of breeds you would be very happy with. At that point, it's about your gut feeling and which one of those breeds calls to you. If shelties don't call to you right now, then go get the breed of dog that does.
 
Don't get a dog you don't want!!

Being an adult means you also get to make exciting decisions that break the mould!!!!

Use logic to understand your needs and your heart to follow your dreams :D

I almost feel like I should listen to them. Every time I look logically at Nextdog shelties are the perfect breed. They fit well with papillons. A bit bigger but not too much of a size difference to worry about. They fit my lifestyle and agility goals very well. I like them a lot. I think they're pretty, smart, fun. I like the temperament a lot... I know some fantastic sheltie people and I know where to get a great one that could probably far surpass my goals.

I just... don't have much draw to them. Is that bad? Is that enough reason to not get one? I wouldn't mind another one day for sure. I probably will have at least one. And I know the folks I train with know me and my dogs well so part of me thinks 'Your gut is telling you this is the smart choice. Your friends are telling you this is the smart choice.' Am I just being stubborn? It's just since being an adult I've never had a dog that wasn't a sheltie or papillon. I'd really like something a bit different.

So... do you tend to go with the logical choice or do you go with maybe the less intelligent choice that you have more draw to?

Agreed, the heart isn't logical lol. And as long as your breed choice is within reason for your life style (personally I think that many of the herders would work out).

Logically an ACD would be the "best" choice for me, but I really, for some reason want to "do" another breed, but I just don't know ... I have a WHILE maybe a year or more before I have to decide.
 
I like a combination of both! With both Ned and Quinn I/my mom and I made the decision to go for a brand new breed we'd never met before. Research gave us a pretty good idea that the breeds would probably be a good fit for us, but ultimately it was a gut feeling that led us to their breeds vs. one we were comfortable and had lots of experience with, such as Aussies (both times it was "do we get another Aussie or try this other breed?!).
 
If I had gone with logic 11 years ago, I would have gotten another JRT and not my first ACD. I also would have been ... Well not miserable per say, but I wouldn't have been satisfied.
