Is this a thing? Can we breed match each other? I think this would be fun, but no idea how long this will last. LOL

Pick a breed(s) best suited for the answers to these basic dog breed selector questions of the person above you, assuming you're adding another dog in the future/just your general preferences. :0 Anybody can also breed match different people!

What best describes what you're looking for in a dog, outside of the questions below?

Size?

What kind and level of exercise/sport?

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?

Intelligence/trainability?

Children or other pets?

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?

---

What best describes what you're looking for in a dog, outside of the questions below?
I love dogs who are super velcro, extremely handler-oriented, naturally inclined to stick with the handler when off-leash, with a moderate~high working drive, but also acutely sensitive to the owner's emotions. Preferably loves water/swimming.

Size?
medium to large

What kind and level of exercise/sport?
chuck-it at the beach combined with swimming or hiking on trails. Maybe schutzhund or agility, depending on the dog, but not competitively.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?
any coat, low to moderate shedding, moderate drooling okay.

Intelligence/trainability?
high emotional intelligence and sensitivity and also easily trainable.

Children or other pets?
can remain relatively calm with stranger children, prey drive doesn't matter.

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?
can protect and fight if needed. Wariness of guests at the door is fine, but aloof outside.

Hm. I'd say lab minus the last one. There's a few pointers in my area that fit this spot on ("English" ones). Aussie? :p

1. I like medium-high energy and drive dogs who are Velcro. Very handler oriented. Playful and fun loving. Scrappy is a bonus! Very in tune with me. Not huge on other people, but absolutuely no shyness. Easy going with travel, schedule changes, ect. Adaptable. I don't mind bossy dogs at all (Nola's as bossy as you can get). Not super soft (Pike is very soft and I get frustrated sometimes, where my dachshund girls act like terriers).

2. Small to medium. Say, 10-35lbs?

3. Ball, frisbee, tug, off leash beach time, running, walking. No plans for formal competition, at least none that would influence breed pick.

4. Any coat, low to moderate shedding, low to moderate grooming (no shaving, but striping is okay as is every other day brushing and some scissor work), no drooling.

5. Highly intelligent, independent thinker, problem solver.

6. Needs to be okay with kids but won't live with them, and must be okay with other dogs.

7. I don't want a dog that is super sociable with strangers. Not shy, but aloof.

I described Nola, haha!

Sounds like you need another Doxie!! Lol. Basically sounds like my friend's Dachshund Sammy.

What best describes what you're looking for in a dog, outside of the questions below?

Basically just want a dog that meshes well with and complements Roxie, and is squishy with me but not SUPER velcro. Roxie's velcro enough for ten thousand dogs, lol.

Size?

Medium to large. NO smaller than 25lbs

What kind and level of exercise/sport?

Medium energy level, get-up-and-go type dog who can settle in the house

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?

Low, low, low. Drooling I don't care about. But basically wash and wear.

Intelligence/trainability?

Understands what you want from them, but doesn't go off designing their own mazes.

Children or other pets?

Okay with neighborhood kids, and friendly with other pets

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?

Same as Roxie- alert, but happy unless there is a real threat.

Toller. Whippet. Perhaps a stafford.

Size?

Min 50lbs, no max

What kind and level of exercise/sport?

Lots and lots and lots of exercise, competitive sports. IPO, agility, obedience/rally, etc. Hiking, running, chuckit. I do a lot of trick training.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?

Don't really care about coat or grooming, I'm not a fan of beards or curls. I'd prefer a dog with a drier mouth, but drooling doesn't bug me all that much.

Intelligence/trainability?

Intelligent and can think for themselves, but at least somewhat biddable.

Children or other pets?

I have other pets of all shapes and sizes, but I don't care if the dog gets along with them, really. My dogs don't see children often, Em aside. I don't plan on having them.

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?

Protective and will back me up if need be. Outside of the home, neutral and under control.... but again, will back me up if need be.

Directed towards TeacupTiger

Greyhound
Whippet
Maybe the right Labrador, or Pit Bull.

I like high energy dogs. A dog with drive. A dog who is biddable. Handler oriented breed. A dog that has an off-switch. Soft temperament.A breed that tends to be velcro.

Size? 15 lbs. - 70 lbs. Preferred weight is between 20- 45 lbs. Trick training.

What kind and level of exercise? Hiking. Swimming. Biking. Walking.

What kind of sports?
Agility. Dock diving. Disc dog/Frisbee. Herding. Tracking. Freestyle.

(Depends on the breed I'm getting. This isn't specified to a particular breed.)

Coat? Double coated, or single coated, it really doesn't matter to me.
Shedding? The less shedding the better, but, shedding isn't a issue.
Grooming? 4 to 6 times a week. I'd like to avoid going to the groomer.
Drooling? I'd like to avoid it.

Intelligence/trainability?
Sensitivity to his handler. High Emotional High Intelligence. Biddable.
[Very similar to Lancerandrara]

Children or other pets?
Good with Children. Good with pets in the household. Don't care about outside the house. Dog friendly.

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?
Friendly, but not like a Labrador "I-Love-Everyone".

Julee: That says shepherd to me. Either GSD, Dutch or Belgian...

Jazzy: Miniature American Shepherd was my main thought

What best describes what you're looking for in a dog, outside of the questions below?

I enjoy fun dogs that love to do things and train and are adaptable to my lifestyle. I spend a lot (most) my spare time doing things with the dogs and enjoy having go anywhere, do anything dogs. I like human oriented, intelligent, confident, athletic dogs. I prefer a more 'up' kind of temperament with a serious streak.

Size?

20-40 lbs, willing to go down to 15 and up to 50 but not more than that.

What kind and level of exercise/sport?

Medium to high level agility competition preferred. I'd like to go for a MACH but not looking for a world team dog. I enjoy training and want a dog that is up for dabbling and maybe competing in about anything that strikes my fancy. I trick train a lot. I like hiking with the dog. I like dogs that enjoy playdates with my friends' dogs. Dogs that like going places to explore and are always willing to go more. I'd rather tone down a wild dog than ramp up a dog with little energy. Good off switch is a must though.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?

Short coat or long coat is ok. No coats needing professional grooming. NO major droolers (ick)

Intelligence/trainability?

High intelligence and highly trainable preferred.

Children or other pets?

Preferably does not want to kill other household dogs. Other than that, not an issue.

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?

Unimportant. I can deal with either aloof or friendly as long as the dog is stable and confident in temperament. My ideal is friendly but with a protective streak when something is weird. Right now I have a dog that is afraid of most people and untrusting of them, a dog that thinks everyone is their BFF, and a dog that is friendly but also very watchful and more toned down. I would prefer a dog that wasn't flat out afraid of strangers.

directed at Jazzy-

I thought Collie first, besides the grooming part.
Australian Cattle Dog was my second thought. :0
and then Tollers.

at Laurelin-

oddly, that sounds a lot like a general Mini American Shepherd! Aloof/wary at the door and will alert and go into protection mode if something is off.

Can I do everybody? I love this game.

L&R: Dobe was my first thought.

Amanda: Border terrier? Or a Jack.

Terra: I though mini poodle before I got to the grooming requirement. German pinscher, maybe? I don't know a ton about them. I think you'd like a Toller.

Man, I love Tollers.

Laur: Most small herders. Staffie. Small retrievers.

What best describes what you're looking for in a dog, outside of the questions below?
I like a dog that likes spending time with me, and likes to do stuff together. I don't enjoy it when a dog would rather take a nap or chew a toy than play with me. I'm very self-centered, and I'd like the dog to be me-centered too. :rofl1:

Size?
20 - 40lbs, with a little bit of play in that.

What kind and level of exercise/sport?
High on both; I want to compete in obedience, and we'll probably also do rally and dabble in other stuff. I like a high energy, go-go-go dog.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?
I prefer a long coat, and don't do drooling at all.

Intelligence/trainability?
High on both; I like a dog that can out think me. I like a dog that likes to learn and wants to work with me.

Children or other pets?
Other pets yes, children are irrelevant.

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?
Anything from best-friends-5ever to suspicious is fine.

I'm really bad at this, but for the last two, I got:
Jazzy: Sheltie, MAS, or Collie off the top of my head
Laurelin: BC, ACD, Decker Rat Terrier

Size?
30lbs to 90lbs, give or take a little

What kind and level of exercise/sport?
Medium to high energy, with focused drive. Off-switch is a must. I like a dog that's up for whatever without going nutso, would enjoy walks, every now and then hiking, sometimes the beach, mostly long walks, fetch, ball, frisbee, on a regular basis.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?
I like short, smooth, and medium coats. I can deal with shedding and regular brushing but nothing crazy, nothing curly, nothing that requires professional grooming. Ehh, no drooling please.

Intelligence/trainability?
Intelligent, handler-sensitive, quite biddable. Sound nerves preferred, maybe something that bounces back well?

Children or other pets?
I have a cat, so yep. And being okay with kids is preferred.

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?
Doesn't have to be confrontational or extremely wary, but aloof and ready to alert from inside the house. Maybe even back me up, but not required.

What best describes what you're looking for in a dog, outside of the questions below?
- A take anywhere dog that loves can hike all day with me and not freak out in a new environment. Also relatively healthy. There are some breeds I don't look at because they have a shorter life expectancy.

Size?
- 30 plus pounds, no max.

What kind and level of exercise/sport?
- High energy, but focused and drivey. I've met a few dogs that have a lot of energy but it's really difficult to focus that energy and they end up just being off the wall bouncy/crazy. I'm sure some of that is their lack of training as well.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?
- Don't mind a medium shedding and daily brushing. Don't really want to have to go to a groomer though.

Intelligence/trainability?
- High on both. I want a dog that wants to work with me and is able to grasp difficult concepts.

Children or other pets?
- I don't need them to be crazy friendly, but at the very least aloof and not actively aggressive. I would like to have more than one dog for most of my life and I want children someday.

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?
- After having Hugo who is a bit too friendly, I would say mostly aloof with strangers, but I would prefer they warm up to my close friends that visit often.

(Warning, I'm pretty bad at this)
Laurelin - I automatically thought Australian Shepherd or MAS, but I definitely think lots of herders could fit.
Jazzy - I thought Collie? Except they may not meet your shedding requirements.
Amberdyan - German Shepherd or ACD?

What best describes what you're looking for in a dog, outside of the questions below?
Velcro is a must, I absolutely love velcro dogs! They make me feel so loved, lol. Also must be inclined to be reliable off leash and are handler orientated. Basically the dog must love everything about me and worship me :D

Size?
50+ pounds. The bigger the better.

What kind and level of exercise/sport?
Hiking, walking. Jogging may be an option, depending on the breed (I'm a runner.) Not now, but maybe in the future, non-competitive agility may be an option. High energy, but if I'm sick or something, they should be able to chill without going crazy.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?
I don't really care, just as long as I don't have to take a dog to get shaved/groomed. Basically no wire and no curly coats. Brushing daily is fine by me, and drool is ok if not excessive.

Intelligence/trainability?
Intelligent, biddable. I do like a dog that likes to think (shaping) and has problem solving skills.

Children or other pets?
Generally ok with other dogs, not human aggressive. Ok with respectful children (with training).

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?
I'd rather them be aloof, but honestly I'm okay with anything that isn't fear or aggressiveness.

Ooh I want to play! This ended up being a lot harder than I anticipated, just because we all talk about what we want/like in a dog, breeds we want, etc that it's hard to think independently of what I already know about people!

lancerandrara: I agree with everyone saying Dobe, and Aussie of course :p If not for the emotional sensitivity it sounds like a Chessie might work for you too, and if not for the protection bit, I'd say a Brittany, although they're on the small end of medium. Maybe the right Belgian, too... I'm thinking Tervuren?

AmandaNola: Well, obviously another Dachshund :p But outside of that, perhaps an Australian Terrier? I've been told that they're more velcro/handler oriented than some of the other terriers.

teacuptiger: Whippets of course... maybe a Decker Rat Terrier? Or maybe a rescue scent hound of some sort? I feel like a lot of pure or well-bred hounds have more energy than people expect, but I've met a lot of rescue hound-types that were up for whatever but pretty laid back overall.

Julee: Malinois, but you don't need me to tell you that, lol. Maybe a Beauceron depending on how much sharpness you're willing to deal with. A GSD would fit, too. It sounds like the right type of Rottie would work, same with a Dobe.

Jazzy: Brittany! An Aussie or MAS would fit, too. Perhaps a Collie or Sheltie although of the two I lean toward Sheltie for you. Maybe a field bred English Cocker Spaniel?

Laurelin: Based *just* on your description, a Brittany would fit, but I know you don't feel any pull toward them. Honestly it sounds like Sheltie, maybe Rat Terrier, and you basically described almost every cattle dog mix I've known (okay yours is definitely the hardest, it sounds like I'm just saying your dogs and previous dogs! you just know what you like is all! :p) BCs, too.

Red.Apricot: I'm stuck on repeat: Brittany. Tervuren, obvs. Border Collie. Toller. Here's a random one: Samoyed! They're not at the same competition level as the Belgians, BCs, etc, but I feel like someone with dog skills could take one pretty far, and I think they fit most other things, although they're not as sharp a thinker as the herders, either. Still, the ones I've known have been pretty high energy, biddable, enjoy training as long as it's interesting to them, and very very into their people.

Melle: Sounds like a GSD to me although the shedding is crazy. I feel like a *good* Cane Corso might work but I've heard the breed has a lot of temperament issues right now. I think an ACD might work but I'm not sure "handler sensitive" fits so well with them.

amberdyan: Aussie! What about a Curly-Coated Retriever? They're more on the reserved side for a retriever. Maybe a Tervuren or Groenendael might be a good match.

CrystalGSD: I think a Golden bred for versatility (vs strictly show or field) would be good. A good Collie would fit, too, same with a GSD. Dobes tend strongly to be same sex aggressive but otherwise meet your requirements. Honestly I think that a bunch of the sporting dogs fit, but most of them aren't big enough.

Here's mine:

I like a dog that is obsessed with me :p Very velcro, handler oriented, somewhat sensitive to my emotions but not caught up in them (Riff gets anxious when I'm anxious, for example, and we just feed off of each other and it's bad.) If a dog isn't always glued to my side, I think I'd be upset/offended. I've never had a dog that wasn't so I can't say for sure, haha. I like a go anywhere, do anything dog - a dog that isn't sensitive to change and takes everything in stride. Very stable.

Size?

I prefer a medium sized dog. 30-50 lbs is perfect. Minimum is 15 lbs, maximum is, eh, 70 lbs? I'm not too strict. No tiny or giant breeds, basically.

What kind and level of exercise/sport?

I'm a weekend warrior type with my dogs. I'm a couch potato but also love doing stuff with them, if that makes sense. At this point in my life a dog that needs a lot of physical exercise every day is not a good match. I'm more about lots of mental stimulation and a physical outlet a few times per week. I LOVE lure coursing and enjoy dabbling in various sports. Once I can finally find an agility class that fits my schedule, we'll be doing that. I'd like to play at some rally, dock dogs, and we'll see how barn hunt goes... basically I like a dog that is up for trying anything.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?

Next dog needs to have a soft, silky coat for my tactile/anxiety issues. However future dogs don't necessarily need to. I don't care for wiry or bearded. Super short (Dobes, Vizslas) is not my favorite thing but not an automatic disqualification. I really like silky and feathery, as well as longer/fluffy, although I wouldn't want like... an Afghan coat. Too long, too high maintenance. Shedding doesn't bother me but I really don't like drooling.

Intelligence/trainability?

Yes and yes, high on both. I prefer a dog that grasps concepts quickly and can learn new things in a relatively short time. I also like intelligent jerkbags that try (and sometimes, or maybe often, succeed) at outsmarting me. Biddability is really important to me, though. I don't mind a little "what's in it for me?" but generally independent, "stubborn" dogs aren't my thing.

Children or other pets?

Must be good with other dogs. I don't have kids nor plan on having any.

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?

I don't really care, honestly. Riff is aloof-ish (when he's not afraid) and Rowan is SUPER FRIENDLY and I'm fine with either one. I like a dog that will alarm bark if things are out of place, but they don't need to back it up.

Paviche - Golden Retriever? I was also thinking a Doberman at first until you mentioned the coat issue and having to get along with other dogs (which they do, just as long as people are aware of the SSA issues that may arise).

And what about a Koolie? They come in a variety of coat types (not sure about silky soft though), and a lot of the trainability and temperament aspects seem to fit in well. Actual Koolie people can chime in on that though :p

What best describes what you're looking for in a dog, outside of the questions below?
I like biddable dogs, that truly want to work for their handler and not just for themselves. Stability and adaptability is also a must, I enjoy taking my dogs with me everywhere with me and doing things with them, plus as a college student I move around a lot with a variety of living arrangements. The dog also needs to be handler oriented, but not too dependent. Completely fearless, and a protective and/or defensive streak is a bonus.

Size?
medium to large (40 - 90 lbs?)

What kind and level of exercise/sport?
Walking, jogging, and running a couple times a day plus games of catch and running around in open fields. Hiking and longer trail walks on the weekends, with a beach trip or two every few months (and several times a month in the summer). It'll include quite a bit of off leash time. Will do trick or obedience training a few times a day as well. Sports aren't a guarantee, but IPO and PSA (bitesports) would be my priority.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling?
Absolutely no curly or corded coats. I am generally immune to shedding, but the dog would have to be able to deal with a few warm weeks in the summer (and cold winters without needing pj's). I can spend 10-15 minutes on grooming every week or two if necessary, but nothing complicated.

Intelligence/trainability?
High trainability, biddability, and toy/food drive. Intelligence should be moderate to high though I don't care for a dog with intelligence so sensitive it'd be frustrating for me.

Children or other pets?
I have various small pets but can separate if necessary. It's preferable that they can coexist in peace but it's not a big deal, especially if it's something that can be worked on. Should be able to coexist with other dogs without a crate/rotate life (basically, at this time, I cannot handle a truly DA dog).

I do plan to have kids in the future but I mean, I'm going to be smart about timing and management lol

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home?
No preference for at the house, the dog can be extremely territorial or not at all. I do not want an excessively high defense, civil, and low threshold dog but I don't mind if the dog will hold and bark, or even a dog that may take a bite out of someone who makes a "threatening" move. Generally I would like the dog to be wary (but not fearful, never fearful) of unintroduced, unannounced strangers and appropriately suspicious. But if they are not, I'm happy with that too.

Outside the home I strongly prefer the dog to be and remain aloof and unconcerned.

Melle- I would've said a Golden all the way until the aloof and ready to alert part LOL. This is hard. :0 Collie! Weimaraner!

Amberdyan- German Shepherd, Rottweiler, ACD. I'm sure there are quite a few that can fit into those criteria.

CrystalGSD- Burmese Mountain Dog? I was thinking a Dobe the entire time though, until I got to "generally okay with other dogs".

Paviche- Aussie or Corgi. I really wanted to say Giant Schnauzer (just to mix things up LOL), if not for the size requirement and beard.

Grace- Belgian Malinois? LOL. Rottweiler?

I realized a lot of us have similar requirements, especially on biddability and trainability.

What best describes what you're looking for in a dog, outside of the questions below? Best description - Toby with a dash of Willow.
Toby (boston terrier/english bulldog) is trainable, eager to learn, food driven, toy driven, good with the kids and pets, a tiny bit protective (like sliver of protection), hyperactive when necessary and 'off' when necessary, non-destructive, loves to play, good on leash, good off leash, good with other dogs... Willow is more intense (great pyrenees/shepherd) but what I love about her is her drive to protect. She's loud, she sounds mean, and people cross the street when we go for walks. BUT - at 2 years old she still has frequent accidents in the house, no recall, not great on leash, hyper-focuses on cars/bikes/strangers/squirrels/it's moving!! Barks at everything, knows sit and shake a paw, and has some reactivity/aggression issues. (She's also not mine)

But I think that I would basically like a Toby + Good-Willow qualities combined.

Size? Medium/Large, though I don't mind most dogs in the 20lbs range.

What kind and level of exercise/sport? In the winter we walk 3x daily, for about 30-45mins. Spring/Summer/Fall we go for jogs, and walk 5K each morning + 2-3 more walks in the back paths (wooded area) behind the house, plus play in the field and dog park so roughly a total of about 5 hours/day in the warmer seasons. I have hopes of getting dog into agility.

Coat/shedding/grooming/drooling? Don't mind some drool, don't mind shedding, don't mind daily brushing, however minimal shedding would be better - nothing crazy like husky fur. I'm actually allergic to cats/dogs and when they're heavy shedders it bothers more than if they had slick coats. But I would of course look for things that would help (ie; diet - my long haired cat doesn't bother me nearly as much when she's on a good food)

Intelligence/trainability? I like to be able to teach a dog sporadically. I like the dog to be really into it, ready/willing to learn, toy/food drive, and I like to teach lots of different cue's.

Children or other pets? I have 2 kids + 1 planned future baby, 4 cats, snake, lizard, fish...

Attitude towards strangers at the door and outside the home? I would like a dog who's more aloof with strangers, a little guardy but not unmanageable. I don't mind some barking at strangers but would of course have to train a "stop", and I'd like a dog that turns around to be your best pal the moment they know you're not an intruder.

Equinox - I totally think the dogs you have are the perfect fit for you! LOL. All that was in my head reading was 'Shepherd', something 'Shepherdy'.

@BostonBullMama. I would say Golden. Almost every Golden I know would meet those requirements except the aloof with strangers. My Sisters German Shepherd would also fit those requirements.

What best describes what you are looking for in a dog outside of the questions below? I have anxiety and some things that I know alleviate it is to have a velcro dog. I want a dog that likes to be snuggled and petted. It needs to be small enough to sit with me on car rides (when I am a passenger) but needs to be big enough to handle play with a super large Golden, a German Shepherd, and a super large Lab. It needs to like play, but have a good off switch. When I look at them in the face, I don't want to see a blank stare. When I met the Shelties, I loved when they look at you, you can just tell they have a sharp mind. I don't want to spend hours a day exercising but I want a dog that can go when I need it to. Who is stranger tolerant but prefers to be with me or my husband. The dog has to have a tail. My husband refuses to own a docked tail or naturallu stumpy tail dog. It must be a relatively healthy breed. I don't mind the random ear infection, but I dont want a breed with a laundry list of posible health concerns.

Size? I want a small to medium dog, probably no more than 30 pounds. I do not want anything under 10-15 pounds. I would say that Sheltie or Cocker size is good.

What kind and level of exercise/sport? Mostly walking/jogging. I would like to try agility but don't want a hyperactive dog with no off switch. I'm good with mental stimulation and trick training.

Coat/Shedding/Grooming/Drooling? No drooly dogs outside of anticipation for a treat. I like short coated dogs, but as long as the coat can be good with a thorough brushing once a week and some trimming, I'm good. I might belly shave during summer, because it does get hot here.

Intelligence/trainability?
Looking for a dog that is handler focused, learns because he wants to please you. I don't mind soft dogs. I need a dog that will at least housebreak very easily.

Children/other pets? We are planning on having children some day. This dog must be able to handle being around tiny humans lol. And my birds were here first. I do not want a dog breed really bred for birding. Staring, whining and too much interest in my birds is a big no. The dog also has to get on well with other dogs, and dogs of the same sex.

Attitude towards strangers?
I want a dog that will bark at the door or at a strange sound, but once in the home has to settle quietly and not be too terribly uncomfortable with strangers. Must be able to accept pettings from others bothbinside and outside the home.
