Yes and no. Statistically marginal. However... The grant they got probably has only enough money for 20 dogs. The cost of surgery, follow up etc is not cheap and nowadays most grants are quite small. Plus if it is a preliminary study, then ethically you cannot do a new procedure on lots of dogs in case there is an unexpected negative consequence.
