For those who want to see puppy Lancer's instinct test and beginning herding class snippets that I recorded way back then... LOL. I forgot that I had them uploaded on youtube and suddenly found them again. I wish I had recorded more.

Look at this fool puppy. So forward with chasing and nipping sheep, but scared of crows and leaves on walks. :I (As he was back then)

Very cool! Do you still take herding classes with him? I haven't been able to find any classes around here, only clinics that are held a couple times a year.

I didn't keep up with the herding, unfortunately. :( I only took a few classes all around that time, but Lancer's stamina was pretty poor in the hot environment (he only lasted around 15~20 minutes total per class LOL). And the instructor basically just had us leave once Lancer was tired. It was $40 or $50 per 15~20 minutes basically aaahaahaa.

I kind of wish the trainer did a "1 hour total, dog can rest a many times as he wants, but total of 1 hour of work", instead of just telling us, "welp, time to go, I guess!" once Lancer got tired the first time.

A couple times a year is so few! Where are you guys located?
And sweet picture! Is he yours?

Poor puppy! Our trainer loves when people want to practice, so she lets us stay after our lesson and work for hours. I pay $68 for a 45-minute lesson, work as many as four dogs for the instructor, and then stay for 3+ hours. I always have multiple dogs, so I rotate and everyone gets a chance to rest, and I usually spend some time watching other people's lessons too.

It's a steep price, but they just started offering sheep rentals for $25 an hour (actually longer than an hour, basically until we're done) so we do that for a couple of weeks and do actual lessons further apart.

Oh yeah $50 for only 15-20 min is really steep. I'm in NH. No it's not my dog, it was one of the dogs at the beauceron herding clinic I went to this past fall. We just watched and didn't participate because my puppy was only 4 months old and the instructor said she doesn't usually starts dogs on herding until they are 18 months old.

Oh wow, you guys have a very nice trainer! I wish I lived where you lived... or at least, Lancer does- he would love that.

$25 an hour for that doesn't sound too bad at all, if you guys already have experience and know what to work on! I think having actual lessons every 2 week or more is very ideal, if you guys can train on your own with the sheep rentals until the dogs are ready. It's basically what I do with nose work too, just one class every other week or so.

Yeah... ahahah where did my money go. ;; Mainly the reason why we stopped. Steve Waltenburg is basically the only trainer remotely who does herding classes, unfortunately.

Ahh I see, 18 months is a ways to go. Is the reason why she waits due to waiting for the dog's ligaments/muscles to mature? Lancer was only around 11 months in these videos when we started.

No she said she waits until they mature mentally.
