Annoying and easy
Annoying -- Mitch (10) was delivered by a specialist ob-gyn who dealt with infertile couples; so was really strange for young fit me to arrive and get checked out by him surrounded by these older couples or people who were there with high risk pregnancies; but my general practitioner recommended him and that's where I went. Not a big deal; pretty typical pregnancy for tests and stuff, I was 1 week overdue; just before they would start to push for induction/C-section; when we had a doctor's app't scheduled.
Had Braxton-Hicks for 2 weeks prior; no change in their intensity.
Baby had turned and was head down; but hadn't dropped really; not noticeably to me or anyone else.
Morning of April 11, 2000, I woke up at 4:30, much more intense contractions; bout 20--40 minutes apart; no consistency, one would be 20, then 30, then 20, then 40; so no rush; but definitely contractions; and I was able to sleep between.
Got up at 7:30, normal day activities, phoned Dr.at 9:00 a.m., said having contractions; do I come early? Asks for time between, asks if I've passed the mucous plug (whaaaa

, don't think so), Dr. says; oh you'll know when you do. K.
So keeps going; contractions get more consistent, 20 minutes apart and stay that way for 3 - 4 hours. Go to bathroom and pass mucous plug :yikes: Yeah; no way in hell you'll miss that exiting your body! App't is for 2 p.m., have let my mom and John's mom know that today is the day. John's mom is over the moon, keeps phoning to find out how I'm doing. Phones John to tell him he should be home with me (I had told him stay at work until I need you; have phone with you at all times), he tells her he is awaiting my phone call, which isn't going to happen SINCE SHE IS ON THE PHONE WITH HIM, she gets hint and hangs up to wait until we tell her.
Around noon, I feel anxious, get John to hurry home. We leave at 1:30 for 1/2 hour drive; contractions hurt, lots of pressure, bout 15 minutes apart. We get to doctor's office, I walk in; as long as I stop and pant between contractions; we are still good. Dr. gets me in exam room, does an internal; says good job, you are 7 cm dilated; why don't I go across the road to the hospital and get myself admitted, sure; so walked across road, get admitted, am just changing into one of the johnny gowns when a nurse peeks her head in and says; are you Jennifer Sider; mmmmhmmmm, phones for you! Yup, my m-i-l had tracked us down, so she's marshalling the troops, gets her hubby in gear, gets her crazy aunt in gear, my mom is notified, etc.
I am ready in room, contractions are still going well, after an internal, nurse says; 8cm; cool still progressing; and then she asks if I want something for the "pain". Gotta tell you; there was no real "pain". Mostly pressure on my pelvic girdle. But like a stupid twit; I say sure; whatcha got? Nubain was readily accessible; it's a high end pain killer basically; so I got one. Jab in the thigh.
Stupid, stupid, stupid :wall:
After shot; couldn't get up, had to stay reclined in bed, baby monitor on; up until this time I was walking around. Once I lay down the contractions spaced out again; still strong; but not progressing. I was signed in at 4:30, 8 cm and didn't have Mitch until 9:40; with vacuum assistance; holy yeeeeouch!
Anyway; for his delivery felt rushed; like we had to do it then; really didn't appreciate the doctor telling me that we were having this baby now; because he was off duty in 20 minutes; yeah thanks Jackass.
And note to all future deliverers of children; if you ever read somewhere that delivering the head is the hard part; good luck on the shoulders if your kid is built like a football player. I was exhausted, Doctor says O.K.; head's almost here, push; *******; so I pushed, yeah felt the head come out; then I pause to rest; Dr. says NO - Push again; only one more time; I'm like what comes out now; he says; you have to push the shoulders out; I'm like; why; aren't they attached to the head.
Mitchell arrived 9:40; during a snow storm, April 11, 2000, 8 lbs. 12 oz.
Also due to suppressed respiration; he ended up in an incubator for a week; nothing wrong; just the Nubain doing it's wonderful job.
Will tell Avi's story later,
Jen
