People never cease to amaze me in their capacity to be idiots. I'm driving the last leg of transport mission tomorrow for a 12 year old female beagle who was turned into a kill shelter because....

Her owners got new carpet and didn't want the dog walking on it.

well at least they didn't claim to be "moving".

1 point for honesty, -50 points for the rest of the story.

My Parents got their 2nd Airedale from a family who were re-homing her because she'd got too big. 17 years later I'm still trying to figure out how anyone buys a pedigree puppy from a breeder and doesn't understand puppy is going to grow to the size of mum?

Give the beagle a big love from me and Scooby xxx
Here's hoping their pipes burst all over their precious new carpet

Just as bad as the owner who dumped the 3 puppies in my new development.

When I worked at the ASPCA many years ago, I went in the back and there was a gorgeous, gigantic Harlequin Great Dane in one of the kennels.

I read the kennel card and it said, "Dalmatian. Reason for Relinquishment: Got too big."

Um, well, I guess if you were expecting it to grow into a Dalmatian and it grew into a Great Dane, that would be a bit of a surprise, but how could anyone ever take a dog to the shelter because it was the wrong SIZE??

Or trade one in for some new carpeting, for that matter?

I just don't get it...

When I adopted my cats from the shelter, I got to talking with the manager. She told me of the day someone brought in an 8 year old, long-haired tortiseshell cat. Sweet as sugar, appearently and beautiful.

Owners reason: She got new carpet and the cat no long matched her decor. She wanted to trade the cat in for one that matched.

The owner was informed she couldn't trade in her cat, but she surrendered her cat anyway . . . and was also told never to set foot in the shelter again.

The cat, unfortunatly was unable to find a new home due to her age and was PTS.

OMG. That's... well, BP said it all.

Lilavati, I am so sorry for that poor cat. :( I got Tom when he was around 8 and he had been bounced from Petsmart to Petsmart in the attempt to get him adopted.

I told the manager it was a shame that I'd not come in then (it was about a month before I adopted my first cat there) I would have taken a long haired tortie, 8 years old or not, with a good disposition in a second.

On the other hand, if I had, I wouldn't have gotten Firdaus:

Or Bago (RIP)

Still, I can't believe no one wanted her . . . or that someone could do that to an animal they had had for 8 years.

What lovely cats !!!! I've sat on hold both with adopting and surrendering and it's heart retching !!!! One case was a woman with an old dog that she said couldn't walk . Her claws must have been 2" long and curled up into her pads .......I'm sure she was pts.

Many years ago in Boston my vet tried to get me to take a pair of Borzois that a couple wanted PTS because of redecorating their Beacon Hill home. I couldn't fit them into my 800 square foot studio with the husband, baby, and Scottie.

About a year later though, he convinced me to take home a husky/wolf hybrid pup that the owners decided was vicious at the age of four months. My husband was a little surprised. We had Nik-Nik for eleven years.

But seriously, what is wrong with people? For example, a really tiny amount of research should convince the novice owner that maybe a wolf hybrid isn't such a good idea. I'm talking about the amount of research people regularly put into deciding what kind of detergent to buy.

What is sick here is that these people do not realize that having a pet is a 20 year commitment (+/-). They are not fashion accessories, they are living beings.

People are stupid, not animals.
