I take Zoe to the dog park almost every day (I wish we had a yard, but we don't, and there's no where else close to let her run off leash). Every single time we are there a male dog humps her. I let it go once, but if the owner allows it, or ignores it, it really bothers me. I used to ask the owner of the horny offender to please pull their dog off, but today I'd had it. Some huge mixed breed kept humping my little dog and the owner did nothing- he thought it was just fine "dogs will do that" he says. The third time it happened I went over myself and pulled his dog off mine saying sternly "OFF my dog!" I told the owner once is not a big deal, but repeated humping is just rude. He leashed his dog and left. So there.

Another reason why Riot will never attend a dog park..

We were lucky when we lived in Kingston, there were TONS of open fields for him to run loose in.

here in Ottawa there are a few very nice forest areas that I've let him run off leash in - only because there aren't anyone else through the forest.

Your lucky your pup is a submissive girl. The owner of the other dog would have said something else if your girl had decided to "fight back".. THen it wouldn't be a "dogs will do that" type of attitude.

Some people... I'd be embarassed if Riot did that continuously to other dogs..

Cider's a humper. In a park I let it slide briefly.. I will pull her off if she's an endless pain in the butt. Anywhere else I don't let it go at all. Most people don't understand though.. and think it's okay..

She's gained enough confidence she tries to hump a lot of dogs. And it's really unacceptable to me, unless we are staying with someone for a little while, and they need to work out their pack structure to a point..

Classic. Trash owners always fall pull that. I bet if you'd run over his dog with your car and then leaned out the window to chirp "Cars do that!" he'd have a different spin on the 'might makes right' philosophy.

Ugggh... I hate that. We had a neighbor's 90lb lab who did that to.. well.. everything. And left "residue," in Scooter's words.. which is a less-gross way to put it.

Good for you for telling that dumb*** off. Humping once, even twice, is okay, I'd let it slide, but more than that is NOT okay.

Mafia, how do you get Cider to stop humping other dogs? All the owners I know who've had dogs that do it have been unable to get them to stop, but all of their dogs have been undersocialized and undertrained as well, so I had always thought there was some correlation.

Why do people get so angry at humping? Humping is PLAY. Period. Humping, for dogs, is completely normal. It is not unacceptable, it is not a sign of undersocialization, it is not dominance, and it is not rude. It is PLAY.

Taking a dog to a dog park where they practice all sorts of play behaviors, expect to have your dog humped. They practice hunting, practice fleeing, practice fighting, they also practice sex. For dogs, that is what play is, practicing of all those necessary behaviors...

I get angry because my dog hates it, cowers and becomes totally submissive. She doesn't see it as "play" I can assure you. And, as I mentioned, some of the male dogs take it too far and actually leave residue on my dogs back or behind. That's real fun to clean off.

If she gets very submissive to the behavior, then I would say immediately remove her from the situation, or step between her and the other dog. Don't let any dog hump her at all. Yes, there are very clueless people at the dog park who don't have a clue what their own dog is telling them, let alone other people's dogs. But you very obviously know what your dog is telling you :) , so don't even let humping start.

Hi Scooter! How old is your puppy and is she spayed yet? If she isn't spayed and is between 7 to 12 months she could be coming into season. That being a good reason, (outside of the normal dog behavior Spiritus described) that you're finding your pup is a target everytime you take her to the public park. If she is spayed, her submissive behavior (and I still believe her scent) contribute to this. I do not allow excessive mounting with dogs I do not know, in an off leash group setting. Leaves the door open for a fight and most owners aren't quick enough to prevent that, in a park. If her scent is an issue, take a small jar of Vicks vapor rub with you, put a small dab on the base of tail, and a tiny dab between shoulder blades. On the fur only. If she isn't spayed, best not to take her to the park at all. But you will find that the Vapor rub is a deterant for most dogs, in the situation you describe. In the meantime, try to find dogs for her to play with that are appropriate in size, age and temperament, so she has a positive experience. If they're not there at the park that day, just turn it into a walk and bonding time with you!

otch1- she is 11 months old, and was spayed at age 4 months. I don't know why she is always the target- maybe she's just unusually attractive :D

Yes... I'll bet she's the prettiest girl there! If she's spayed but young, smaller in stature and quite submissive then they're having fun with her simply because "they can". Best to find appropriate pups for her to play with, in this instance.

I tell cider enough, and usually she gets the hint. Many people do freak out, and I'd prefer not to go there.. Or people whose dogs snap at being humped.

The only time Athena shows her teeth is when other dogs mount her. It is rude to allow your dog do that without correction. Sal will try it on occasion but usually it is only he "Friends". But I check him on it and he stops right away.

Maybe you should go up to the own of the "Humper" and grab them in a firm hug from behind and whisper in their ear "Hey...hows it feel for you?"

it is not acceptable if the humpee is not enjoying it. It is not ok if its a 60 lbs dog on a 10 lbs dog. It can be a saftey issue with a large size difference. If the humper is pulled off and the humpee jumps right back in the play with the humper, then it is fine.

I don't really mind that much if it's a female humping her- but that rarely happens. She weighs about 47 pounds, and it's usually some 90 pound big old boy jumping on her. I wish I could teach her to snap at them, but she just cowers and looks at me like "help!"

If it's scaring your dog, it isn't acceptable. I don't care if my dogs engage in that as long as everyone is confident and the humpee/humper is the same sex or spayed/neutered. My dogs are intact and while I'm confident in their training I still don't allow them to play offlead with intact members of the opposite sex.

If a dog wants to hump my dog, he had better get permission from her first, or his owner is going to witness my knee on his dog's ribs.
