Hello,

I just posted about a rescue dog that we are looking to adopt... We were gonna make an appointment to go see her this saturday and very much looking forward to it, we were just waiting to see the adoption policies and how much the fee was. I was thinking around $100...

turns out it's $350!! That seems like a lot of money to me to rescue a dog? and she's not even a purebred... (not that mutt's aren't lovely dogs!!) We only paid $600 for Penny this is more than half of that and one of the reasons too we wanted to go with a rescue was the fact that we wouldn't have to fork out a huge amount of cash right away...

What do you think is this normal or too much? I've never gotten a rescue before so i really don't know, it just seemed like a lot to me...

dont think we'll be able to get her now:( hubby will be very disappointed when he comes home from work:(

They probably had to spend a lot on her (probably veterinary bills), so they need to charge you for those so they can pay the bills and keep the shelter running. It really depends on the shelter. We got our shelter pup for around sixty bucks. She wasn't spayed and had only been there for a day or two.

Way too much for a pound dog.

Most dogs around here they give away free or for nominal fee of like 50$

Just because a dog is from a shelter, or is a mixed breed does not mean it didn't have needs when it was rescued or that it's somehow a bad dog.

It depends on the rescue. If it is smaller they often charge more becuase they put so much into the dogs. If it is a larger place with a lot of help and they don't take in sick dogs then it will be less. I see dobes for three or four hundred all the time. But if this shelter only takes healthy dogs, and is somehow turning a profit(which is hard)then I would run away.

In Canada and more precisely in Ontario, that is a normal fee.

Gsd rescues are $350.

Here is the price at the Ottawa Humane Society

* Dogs: $250 Cats: $130 Puppies: $295 Kittens: $155

$350 does sound a bit steep... usually it's $150 from a rescue (not a pound or a shelter). But they have foster homes that need reimbursed and vet bills to cover, etc. that you need to keep in mind. And you'll be getting an already evaluated, more stable minded dog that's been in a person's home and not sitting in a loud, stressful shelter in a cage. Hunter's a prime example of how that goes bad. If you can't afford the $350, you might reconsider getting a dog. One trip to the vet can easily go that high just for yearly shots and six months worth of heartworm meds and flea protection.

You are on the wrong side of the boarder. She is in Canada I think!

LOL yeah dont get me wrong it's not that I'm not willing to pay or that I dont think she's worth it or anything it's just that it's a lot more money then we counted on and not really something we can afford right now which really sucks. guess just shows I should have done my research better, I assumed it'd be roughly the same as a shelter! because of a line in their information I had also (mis) understood that they don't charge fee's this was the line

We are non funded and we do not seek donations except for a few exceptional and expensive medical cases.

I guess I just misunderstood them that's all! thanks for the info anyway guys!

Did the rescue pay for her spay? Has she been given her vaccinations and checked out by a vet? Has she been tested for heartworm, put on preventatives, etc? If so, that is at the very least, about $300-400 that you won't have to spend on her after you get her. Her adoption fee would just cover her vet bills. It is a large bit of money, I know, but you would be spending it anyway if she wasn't spayed or given any medical attention.

If she was spayed when they acquired her, or if she's not spayed and has only recieved minimal veterinary attention.. I would consider that an extremely steep adoption fee.

The shelter I volunteer at asks $50, I believe, but they recieve a discount from the vet's office and also have other means of taking in money, so they don't rely solely on adoption fees to pay their bills.

lol yeah I am, in ontario:) so thanks for the prices Yuckaduck! that helps out!

it's not that we can't afford vet bills etc. it's just that we hadn't counted on spending that kind of money at this moment (my hubby's bday is this month, property taxes are due etc.) so there's just not really room in our budget for it right now... if any of my pets need to go to the vet they ALWAYS go, regardless wether i have the money or not

my cat just needed dental work done as soon as we found out from the vet that that was the problem the appointment was booked to get it fixed.

it does make sense since they obviously need to spend money on the dog etc, it just sucks I should have read up on it more and not assumed that it wasn't that much...

Oh dang, we have it easy here in California. Fixed dogs from the county shelter are $25-50 with health checkups and some shots as well as a temperament test.
Come down here and you can get a gang of dogs with $350!

Oops, me too. :p

$296....that's a lot of money but if the shelter has given the dog veterinary care and fixed it, it's reasonable.

A lot of the rescues we checked charged anywhere from $200 - $300 for dogs, but they were the smaller rescues and depended on the adoption fees to make sure the costs they put into the dogs were at least somewhat covered. The state shelters charged less, but hadn't given as much attention to health history and so forth.
Jean Luc was $250, but he'd just had all his shots a few weeks before, been cleaned and groomed, been given heartworm medication, and been flown to the shelter from MO, so the price seemed alright. Also got pages and pages of information and medical history. We took him to the vet for a checkup yesterday, and all we needed was the heartworm medication for the next six months! Not nearly as expensive as it could have been if he needed all his shots.
