Maya got into the trash while I was in the shower and got a salmon fillet out of it. She ate the whole thing, skin and all. (I tried a new recipe and it didn't work out right, which is why there was a whole fillet in there to begin with.) I did a google search and didn't find anything saying that it wouldn't be ok for her, but I just wanted to see if anyone here knew. I guess I will be going to buy a new trashcan tomorrow that she can't get into.

You said you'd thrown it out because a new recipe didn't work... I'd be more concerned about what you put ON the salmon than the salmon itself... and had it been cooked when you threw it away? Had it been frozen before you prepared it?

What Vanillasugar said...what was on the fillet?

Otherwise, so long as it was a boneless fillet and you don't make a regular habit out it, he should be ok. If you want to feed salmon as a special treat, just get some from Alaska and not PacNW.

Hey, you are from Portland too! Must be a Pacific NW thing. We all seem to know about salmon poisoning around here. Back when I worked at the vet clinic one of the other employee's dog ate smoked salmon. We found flukes and luckily she started treatment with doxycycline before she got sick. It's a very scary illness...

I'm surprised the smoking didn't take care of it, I wonder if the dog could have gotten some raw?

Yeah, it makes me sad that I can't give Dante raw Salmon, he would go ape for it I know!!

I called the emergency vet right after I posted. The recipe called for using a frozen salmon filet and something didn't go right and the outside was getting burned, but the inside wasn't done enough. She told me what to watch for and told me to bring Maya in if I had any concerns. Maya is acting like normal right now, and I always wake up if she starts moving around in the bedroom at night in case she does get up and get sick. Thanks for the responses everyone.

She didn't get any raw. The smoked salmon was from a salad that she brought home as left-overs from a restaurant and left on the counter. Her dog got into it. It was a small amount and it was cooked. The vet I worked for said that salmon is very dangerous and even if it is cooked it can still cause the illness because it usually isn't cooked hot enough. Luckily her dog was okay, but she was on doxycycline for quite some time...

I work at a fish market, and I feed mine salmon all the time,,COOKED salmon..
I basically poach the heck out of it and retain the liquid as well, makes for gorgeous coats and the dogs go bonkers over it.

My understanding is certain kinds of raw salmon is a big no no..As for smoked salmon,,we do that to (I don't feed it tho), and my understanding of smoking is, it's not really 'cooked",,it's put into a smoker raw, after being brined, and while it's smoked a good period of time, it's not a high temperature.

Just my 2 cents

just wondering where you got your recipe from.... In my years of culinary school and the industry.. i've never cooked a frozen piece of protein. Unless it was for stock :p

Maybe something new? I'd like to know! :D

hope your buddy is fine!

It takes around 5-7 days for symptoms, so keep your eye on her for at least a week or so.

Thanks Showpug, I read 6 days on one website, so I've definitely been keeping my eye on her. So far so good though. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but nothing out of the ordinary at all.
The recipe was off a recipe card my fiance picked up at the grocery store, we have used it on a fresh piece of fish before, but it gave instructions for using frozen too. I forgot to take the fish out of the freezer so I figured I'd try it, I won't be doing that again. :)

Hmmm, interesting... we feed salmon treats to our dogs, but we bake them... wonder if there's any harm there?
It depends on where the salmon you are using is coming from and how hot you bake them etc. Personally, I will never give any form of salmon to my dogs because of the cases of salmon poisoning I have witnessed. The dogs that came in with salmon poisoing were usually worse than the pups we saw with parvo. To me, it's just not worth the risk. I am sure I am being overly cautious, but once you see dogs so sick from it, you tend to avoid it.

LOL I am lucky, neither of mine are particularly drooly, but they are diggers. :p They actually dug about an inch into the mattress of my old bed.... I would lock them out of the room but my one girl is 11 and so loves sleeping on my bed... I can't deny her! I have to keep reminding myself she's the love of my life though when I wake up in the morning squished against the wall smelling dog farts as she never seems to sleep with her head next to mine, always her head at my feet, and stretches out the length of the bed!

I am having to face the very real possibility of her not spending next summer with me. :( Very difficult to deal with -- I can't imagine not having another big dog. I have been thinking I'd like to do dane rescue with the older ones - ones who haven't had much of a chance for love and just need a warm, soft place to spend the rest of their days being loved. Would be a tough job but someone's got to do it!

Rescue would be great. Danes are all heart. People don't understand it until they have loved one and had one in their life. They are the most tender dogs on earth, but would protect you in a second if needed. I loved my dane so much, but he was so plagued with health problems in his very short 4 years. His life was a fight and even though he had struggles he was always so good to us. You are so lucky your dane has made it to 11! I hope she has many more years at your side. I used to tell the vet staff that my dane had one feeling and they better not hurt it!!!!
