Hi. I'm posting a periodic update. I have been lurking periodically, but haven't been here regularly since I started my psychiatry residency in July of 2010. I work truly horrific hours and commute two hours each way and have a bunch of kids and numerous pets, so have been too busy to sleep, mostly, let alone participate in Chaz. I do miss the place, though

Uncle Fred and Mini are totally fine, if older. Mini is still an unholy nuisance, Some things never change. We are up to six cats-- thanks to my daughter Rachel, so now we are probably known as the crazy cat people. They are all indoors and three of them are all or mostly black, so we kind of hope that people who see them in the windows think there are less of them then they are. They are, in order of age, Bug, Smedislav, Suvichka, Tesla, Captain Crunch(female!), and Pennzel.

My kids are doing really quite well. They have blossomed since Molly went to school at ASD, including Molly herself. Rachel is teaching graduate art in Riyadh, John is going to go to grad school at Columbia University, Ricky is nationally ranked and NJ high school champion in fencing. It's kind of amazing.

Financially, things are still pretty rough, but there is some short term hope, kind of. Things are certainly much better than they were when I was working at Starbucks. And in the long term promise of goodness when I finish my program and can make some actual money. I am very blessed to be able to work in a field that I love and that provides a decent income as well.

I have been having a lot of trouble with my diabetes, since my pancreas decided to stop working entirely, switching me to type I from type 1.5/LADA. I got an insulin pump a couple of weeks ago and am slowly adjusting to the idea of being operated by a device that runs on a double a battery for the rest of my life. I am getting better at working it, and more used to it every day. I'm grateful that at least this is a controllable condition, and common enough that there are constant advances in treatment.

Anyone else here have diabetes? Mutual support is a good thing, I think.

Every time I see a Beagle or some such dog, I think of you. That's great that things are coming along so much better, at least for the most part. But sorry you're having difficulty with the diabetes. I bet you'll get things adjusted and it will be okay. I can imagine it takes some fiddling with to get things leveled out.

Glad you stopped by and hope you stop by more often, though your hours and commute and all sounds grueling. Maybe in time, you'll get to work closer to home or move closer to work. Best wishes. :)

So good to hear from you! Hopefully things will settle down once you're finished with your residency. Sorry to hear about the diabetes, we've only had cats with it, so not much help. I do know that Sis and I both suck at giving insulin shots...

Glad to hear the kids are doing well and whoohoo! to Ricky! NJ has some really good fencing clubs. Do you know Ted Li? He had a fencing club in the Newark area years ago (and is a nationally ranked armourer).

Good to hear from you, my daughter is type 1, was diagnosed at 14, she has had a pump for 3 years and loves it! By the time she got her pump she was controlling her diabetes herself so not much help there, but I can say it's been a savior for her!
