I'm curious, especially for those of us in relationships, who gets the dogs and why?

Bandit would 100% come with me. He was mine before and he isn't a shared dog. David wouldn't want him anyways as they don't like each other. They just co exist. Arya on the other hand is ours. I'd have a feeling she'd be coming with me if my relationship was no more.

My brother was laughing today saying if we were to ever split he could see a huge custody battle happening... And not about the kids lol.

I've never done the whole "shared dogs" thing well. When it came to family OR partners.

Even within a household as children we never had family dogs, we had dogs that belonged to individuals who fed/walked them so the decision of who goes with whom was always simple.

We would sometimes help out with care and such (Hey can you let doggy out tonight? I'm running late) but never anything really substantial.

Abrams would come with me, and Cynder would stay with Michael. If he was deployed, I'd probably request to have her at those times, especially due to her health issues.

I have a feeling we'll always have our own dogs, never "shared" dogs. And that's just fine. I think I prefer it that way. We share the responsibilities of the dogs, but not the dogs themselves. Lol

The 3 rabbits were acquired prior to the start of the relationship... so mine.

Both dogs we got "together" but basically I wanted a dog and BF just agreed. He does nothing with them and until recently when I was away for a week has never cared for them except to put them outside on occasion. Also, neither dog listens to him or really pays him any mind. He wouldn't want them if we split up. He likes having them around but not the work that comes with them. So... mine.

Bloo and Em are mine. Shadow is my mother's, Copper is my father's. If anything happened to him, I'd take Copper. If anything happened to her, my father would take Shadow.

Two of the cats are Rick's, one of them is mine, one is my brother's. We brought Rick's two in the move, only because I didn't want the hassle of bringing three since my boy would have had to been shipped. When we move out within CT, he'll come with.

The dogs are both mine. I've vaguely thought about whether Riff would be happier with my brother. They're incredibly bonded. I love Riff so much that I'm not sure I could do it, though. It comes down to an admittedly selfish "he's mine!"

When I move out, they'll come with me.

Current dogs, me without question. We won't have "shared" dogs really... But the SO has mentioned more than once wanting his "own." The things is I know he only wants one because he will be with me and I'm a dog person. He's only ever had a cat, so he's pretty awkward with pets. He's come around to my dogs, but faced with being alone IDK if he would want the dog unless I was not going to take it. So... When he gets "his" dog, I have no idea... All others will be me without question.

That being said, I hope I never have to find out.

I'm living alone at the moment with the two dogs I've had for 6 years, and they'll never go with anyone else. Almost two years ago when my girlfriend moved out, she took the pug I spent a couple years searching for - because I was searching for her dream dog. And I don't like pugs, so she was welcome to take him. She also asked to take the 13yo pit bull we'd adopted together a few years prior, and I said No. She stayed with me, although I let my ex come with us when it was time for the dog to cross the bridge.

Oz and Ruby are my parent's dogs.

Cobain and Rigby are mine. Josh loves them, but understands that he can't provide the life that they need.
Maybe in the future if he gets me to agree to a lower-needs little dog, that will be his.

My current living situation is not one I care to elaborate on over the internet, but while I am currently living mostly alone and have the Dobermans, if I actually moved out on my own completely, my mom would have them. Or at least Keira. Probably Ripley too though. Journey and Dance are 100% mine and would come with me always.
