List Of 75 Banned Or Restricted Breeds - Is Your Dog On The List?
The Responsible Dog Owners Of The Western States (RDOWS) has just updated the list of breeds that have been banned or restricted in the U.S..

All you dog lovers out there may just be in for a shock. BSL - or breed-specific legislation and breed discriminstion- isn't just for pitbulls or Rottweilers anymore

**UPDATED LINK** RDOWS UPDATED COMPILATION OF BANNED/RESTRICTED DOG BREEDS TRUTHS FROM RDOWS

The RDOWS has tracked a list of 75 breeds of dogs that have been banned or restricted - yep - that's Seventy-five. That's 75!

Just who or what is behind this breed ban frenzy?

Is your dog on the list of banned or restricted breeds?

Here's the deal...............

Media Frenzy Equals Breed Bans

And just who is pouring gasoline onto the fire, whipping up the flams of pit bull hysteria? Who is driving the onslaught of anti-dog legislation?

Your local paper, TV or radio station - with innacurate reports than use inflammatory language ("vicious" Rottweiler, "marauding" pitbulls, etc.) and show UNRELATED footage of dogfights supplied by the Humane Society of the United States.

Across the country - and indeed around the world - cities, counties and local town councils are busy banning or restricting breeds instead of punishing irresponsible behavior.

Here's what is happening:

Breed bans - an outright ban on owning a specific breed of dog
Breed-specific sterilization - owners are forced to spay or neuter animal
Breed-specific
Breed-specific insurance requirements - forces owners to obtain the unobtainable "vicious" breed insurance - in reality this forces owners to surrender dogs or move
Weight or size restrictions - banning dogs over an arbitrarily determined weight or size - as in Fairfield, Iowa where all dogs over 100 lbs are banned (St. Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, etc.)
BTW - your insurance company is happily waiting in the background too - waiting to exclude coverage of your dog, waiting to drop your policy, or waiting to outrageously raise your rates.

So - without further ado, courtesy of the RDOWS, here is the list of 75 - count 'em - SEVENTY FIVE - banned or restricted breeds .....................

I knew Boxers were already on some bugger's list but what the hell are they playing at? Skye's vote has been sent in. You did not say what the Subject line should be ... I just put Boxer in Tenerife. Is that okay?

GOLDEN RETRIEVER?????????? Oh, yes....they're sooooo viscious! One might just PLAY you to death!
No offense intended but this is just breed profiling to the other extreme. Given a bad owner that promotes aggression in their dog, this breed as well as any other can be dangerous. The Golden is not immune to bad ownership.

I don't assume anything about any dog due to it's breed.

Thanks for the link Bahamutt99, BSL is discrimnatory no matter which breed is the target.

People get so much help from dogs. The dogs on those lists, when owned by the right people, serve a tremendous purpose. For some, it's just companionship and being a sport buddy. For others, it's a Pit Bull that hunts with people. For others, it's a Dane that provides mobility assistance. Goldens, Labs, Belgians and GSDs are by far the most common assistance dogs, SAR dogs and police service dogs. Heelers, aussies, ACDs, 'Houlas, even Filas are often irreplacable farm workers - I think it's absurd that they banned nearly every commonly used herding breed. Most people couldn't have livestock without their livestock guardians like Caucasians, Pyrenees, Akbash and Anatolians. People still use Huskies (Sibes and Alaskan) for transportation, people still use Dobermans for personal protection... By eliminating these dogs, people are eliminating their hugely underappreciated helpers.

Ridiculous, the lot of it. And I don't even know what to say about the Pug. People must be prejudiced against squishy noses, because other than killing by cuteness I can't think of anything dangerous about a Pug.

73.

The GSD is listed twice, Alsatian Shepherd, and as the GSD.

The ACD is also represented on the list as the Blue Heeler.

What is the source of the list? Until then... this is just anti-hysteria hysteria!

Just goes to show what happens when you let the cat people make the laws.... ;)

I'm not trying to make light of the whole thing, I mean...Aussies are on there...but it's laughable to see what people think of sometimes.

Wow very interesting. Some of those breeds are the sweetest dogs!

I will say this about Golden's- the one that lives next door broke out of his house a few weeks ago and attacked my dog, who was on a leash going potty a few houses away. My dog had some bad bruises and scrapes to his back leg from the scuffle. I was shocked, never expected that sort of dog to come charging at us like that. Like a poster above mentioned- it is all about the owners, really.
