If at all possible I'd go meet them both (with Mr. Color-Picky) and go from there :)
This, ideally.

If I couldn't meet them... it would depend on how much their personalities were different. If it was negligible, I'd go with the color I preferred. But if there was a clear difference in personality I'd get the puppy with the non-preferred color.

It's impossible for me to answer this question at all now with any objectivity, because the color you don't want is one of my favorite colors, so...my vote is GET THE PUPPY :D

Picture yourself three years down the line.

If you get the better sport prospect, and you're meeting all your competition goals, will you be disappointed looking at the dog saying, "If only you were a different color."

If you get the handsome puppy, and the 1st pick puppy is surpassing you in competition goals, will you be kicking yourself for not getting over the color thing?

What would you regret more?

A sound structured dog almost always looks good IMO
^This. I can think of a lot of dogs I know whose color would my very last choice but who are just stunning because they move so beautifully. And a lot of dogs whose colors are my favorite but whose structure is iffy and they don't have nearly the impact.

It's not so much that a good dog is never a bad color, so much as that a good dog can make any color look good :)

When I got Kris, I wanted a red and rust female Doberman. Turned out she was the only red in the litter and a female. I would have taken a black though if that was all there was. I think when you get the puppy, it really will not matter what color it is.

Get the puppy! I remember when Lugia and her 3 sisters were born. The other 3 had super flashy markings and Lugia had the plainest most common Silken marking. I thought to myself, I would be happy with any of these puppies except for this one *points to Lugia's picture*

I had told the breeder what kind of personality I wanted and what my plans were for my puppy. She picked Lugia for me and wouldn't even consider letting my visual favorite go with me. "Lugia is perfect for you," she insisted.

She was completely right. At first, I was disappointed that I got stuck with the "plainest" looking dog, but as I got to know Lugia, and got to meet with her sisters intermittently as they were growing, I knew that Lugia was the only suitable one for me. Not like I don't like her sisters, just that Lugia's personality was SO different and she can do things that none of her sisters can do. She absolutely is my perfect dog. I worship her so much that I now think that she is way more beautiful to me than any other Silken. I LOVE her markings now and find myself wondering how I got so lucky to land the most beautiful smartest loving Silken ever.

I am biased. I wanted a split faced girl (against all odds) and actually got one. It would have only been better if she were tri.

BUT I knew exactly what I wanted regardless of color, and after waiting three years I wasn't going to be picky. She is absolutely gorgeous, completely amazing even if she were puke green. Luckily she isn't, though.

But if there has been two of her and differences were hardly noticeable except for some personality quirks, I may have gone with a tri or red.

Big noticeable differences, less preferred color but better dog for me.

I'm living it. Only colour I didn't want was white. I've got two white dogs. I let the kennel manager pick Summit for us as we wanted cat safe and a good apartment dog. My breeder picked Kili for my agility dog.

Better luck next time!

When I got Grant, I wanted blue or black. I found a breeder who met all of my criteria that only ever produced blues and blacks. The upcoming litter was out of a blue and a black. I told her I didn't want no red or fawn dog.

Three pups arrived. One blue, one black, and one fawn. I knew which was mine at birth. Now fawn is my favorite AmStaf color.

The breeder had two more litters before she passed away, both of which contained all black pups. I had the one and only yellow Hartagold dog.

Thanks for all the stories & insight. I've read husband all of the responses.

He won't budge. He wants the "total" package that he has to live with for the next ___ years -- so as much as I want one of these pups, if one of the others aren't a good fit (they're only five weeks old, there's a chance, right?) we'll wait until there's a pup that's "perfect".

I'm upset, disappointed and frustrated. I'm visiting the pups solo, so if Choc. Boy is as great in person it'll be reeeeeally hard to resist and I might just have to ask for forgiveness...

Is it your dog or his dog? Or kind of shared? Obviously if it's his dog it's his choice, but I think whoever is the primary caregiver should have final say.

Not only was Pike a color I didn't want (and now he's my favorite, although I do love a black tri <3), Poodle Puppy is a color I absolutely did not want (red). I wanted the black pup, but red fit better and it's really growing on me. Personality trumps color.

Yeah if it's YOUR dog and YOUR sport dog, I'd tell him tough cookies.

I mean... I can get it if it were a personality concern about it fitting in the household or something like that but color would not affect how the dog fits into your life.

I am not a fan of waiting on 'the total package' because ime that could never come. You're always going to compromise a little bit most likely... and color is one of the most immaterial things you could compromise on.

I think if colour is the only slight hesitation. it would be not even a consideration for me. Black& white BCs are my least favourite but if I could have a Hob Nob& that was the only one fitting my wants? I'd take it, happily!

Honestly, if the dog was going to be my sport dog, DH and I would be having a serious talk about priorities in dogs. He might have to look at the dog for the rest of its life, but if it's going to be your sport dog you have to work, live, and compete with the dog for the rest of its life--that trumps looking in my book-lol.

There's a saying, a good horse is never a bad color...I think it applies to dogs as well ;)

I was in this same position. Really really really wanted a shaded sable - wasn't a big clear sable fan. Breeder usually places puppies, but said both Quinn and her shaded sable sister would be a good fit for me and left the decision between the two up to me - BUT she said that she thought Quinn was the best suited out of the two. I thought on it for a solid two days and ultimately went for Quinn based on breeder recommendation and also the fact that she was slightly smaller in size. Now I love a dark clear sable!!

If the color just wasn't my favorite I would go for the perfect puppy. If I really, really, really didn't like it I would go with the second choice puppy if it was still suitable and still had all those great characteristics :)

Get puppy.

To be honest though, the single obstacle to me getting a kuvasz is their poofy white coat. If they came in smooth and white like a dogo I'd go for it. If they were poofy and dark I'd go for it. But in this climate the white + poofy combo is exceptionally bad.

I'm still tempted to get one and dye it like this. Talk about a burglar deterrent. :rofl1:

I had similar feelings towards fawn before I got Rhys. His breeder has produced gorgeous, flashy dogs in lots of colors. I was really quite 'eh' on his color but otherwise thought he sounded like a great puppy.

Now I love his color and couldn't be happier with my little brown dog.
