So I am wanting to henna my hair. As it is, I have a brown/reddish hair colour and I am thinking I'd like it a little more red. Want to stick to something natural, so am thinking henna.

I know a few of you here have experience with it, so was wondering if you can link me to any good resources? Also, some experiences and thoughts, pros and cons, etc.. AND! Any before and after pictures would be cool!

Thanks in advance!

Go over to the long hair community. It's where I went when I wanted to know more about henna.

I used Feria for years but found it faded out quicker than I was happy with. I've been hennaing 4ish years.

Feria fade out, before henna

A year later hennaing in sunshine

This spring indoors low lighting

Henna is awesome. I adore it and will likely never go back. Seconding Maf's recommendation of joining the long hair community. I'm a member there and rarely post, but it's a wealth of info when I need it.

Pros: It not only colours your hair. It strengthens it, smooths it, helps eliminate dandruff, prevent lice, and I've found I get split ends less frequently.

Cons: Your hair will likely smell like hay for a week or more. I personally don't mind this, but some people do. It's permanent, as in chemical dyes don't take well after henna.

Pro/Con: It may be a steep downhill into other awesome natural haircare techniques. ;)

Personally I use Henna from Henna Sooq. They have a Canadian store, great customer service, and sometimes they throw in freebies based on my previous orders. :) I use the Jamila henna powder. I need at least 300g worth for my hair length, though next time I think I need to upgrade to 400g.

Photos...

Here's a few of right before I hennaed for the first time. I used lots of chemical dyes and had a lot of recurring dandruff issues. Also, grey hairs everywhere.

And I took a photo of my henna mix for good measure. I use lemon juice and a hint of fruit tea, with generous sprinkles of clove and cinnamon. It becomes this great green-brown paste that smells like indian spices... in a barn.

Here's a few days later, after the colour oxidized a little.

The dandruff was mostly gone and all my grey was covered.

Another pic, much more recent and after a number of applications (and longer hair):

I'm basically sold forever. If you have more questions I'm sure we can answer. :)

So that link I posted above is the same stuff you use? If I could get that shipped to a US post box, which I can, then that wouldn't be a bad deal, right?

Wow, the difference from your hair to after is amazing. I am curious what colour it will make my hair colour...

This is my natural hair colour.

I am very excited to try it!

I needed about 500g for a whole head application, but my hair is thick and long.

Once upon a time my hair was auburn, but I'm dumb, and coloured it black cherry in uni. When I was done, it's grown in brownish since.

I'd order directly from henna sooq's Can store honestly.

I found out I can get a 100g box of "pure, fresh natural henna powder" for $9 from a local lady so I will likely be buying from her.. Now just to figure out how many boxes I will need... am thinking I'd like to mix it with conditioner, when I mix it, since I've read about that.

I'd ask her if it's body art quality.. As 'fresh and pure' are great.. but could be how she is simply considering it. Some ethnic stores sell decent and some sell pretty crappy henna for cheap.

She is an out of home henna (body art) shop type thing. But I did send her an email asking if it's body art quality, because that's what I want, right? She also said that she thinks it'd take 1.5-2 boxes to do my hair, with how long and thick it is, and said she's been doing her own hair for 10 years so she will answer any questions I have. She even offered to mix it into the paste form for me to use that way! Considering what I was looking at online was $6 a box plus $2 for shipping, I might as well just pay $9 and buy local, I think.

I want to try this too! I spend about $100 getting my hair dyed dark red (very natural, in the fall/winter) every 6-8 weeks. I would love to have something I could do myself. This is the color I like...

that should be easy to accomplish with henna, right? Also, what about putting it over my dyed hair? I am always told my hair is super healthy, but by hair stylists so they're used to seeing more damaged hair? I'm going to wait until after the wedding to try this LOL Otherwise it seems like just tempting fate ;)

Do it! :) I love love love my hennaed hair. I'm naturally a lighter blonde than you are, Shay, and when I started hennaing, I had completely bleached out white-blonde hair. my hair turned BRIGHT orange on my first application, then darkened after 2-3 which I did in rather quick succession (every 2 weeks). Now I'm a super-rich auburn that glints purple in the sunlight and I don't look like I was ever a bleached out blonde.

So the stuff this woman has is body art quality. $9 per box, no taxes even... I am thinking of getting the stuff to do it in the next few days... but as I posted in the girly thread, this is my fear:

My biggest hesitation is that I have NO idea what colour it's going to make my hair. I would like something like this:

But I am scared it will turn into this:

Which I do not want. lol.

WTA Woah sorry huge pics. I stole them off google images.
CrazedACD THANK YOU for the link! I am looking at every single post on every single page now! lol

Bought some Caca Rouge from Lush tonight! (btw can I say that store and its employees are awesome? This was my first time ever going there). My friend and I are going to have a henna dying party tomorrow night. She's been wanting to henna her hair for months and finally I told her get brave because it's happening this weekend. lol.

Wish I didn't have to work in the morning because I'd love to at least get a strand test done or something RIGHT NOW lol.

Okay Shay, here's my suggestion: Buy enough boxes for two applications. 100g covers my extremely thin, mid-back length hair - you may need 200g or more considering you have such nice thick hair. :)

Do your hair, let it sit in your hair overnight so you get as much dye soaked in as possible before rinsing it out. If it's bright orange after the color oxidizes, do another application. If it's anything like the henna I use, it'll auburn itself right out within the second or third application.

Henna is not a one-time thing, it's a "if you like this, you'll keep doing it because your hair keeps getting better" thing!

I'll go dig up the post I made in the girly thread, with pictures of my hair right after I went from bleach blonde to henna red.

This is my most recent pic that shows my hair; keep in mind that it's in sunlight, which is why it looks purply. It normally looks dark reddish brown, but in the sun it turns FAAAAAAABULOUUUUUSSSSSS and sparkles purple.
