The closing on our house that we are selling is supposed to be July 13. :yikes:
I need to sort thru 15 years of living here....in this huge house. I have no motivation. I am overwhelmed and do not know where to start. We should be out by the closing... What am I going to do?
My husband has no interest in helping me decide what and how to do it...with the things inside the house. He is concentrating on our garage and the things in it.:(
I guess I am supposed to box up everything we are keeping... and when I am done he will help move the boxes????
What am I supposed to do with the stuff I don't want to keep? I am really thinking about putting stuff in the yard with "free" signs on them.
I AM OVERWHELMED, so therefore I am ignoring the fact that I have to be out of here in a little over two weeks.
What should I do first? ............. Someone help me........lol

Where do I start?

I would start by sitting down and writing priorities out. First...where to get box's of all shapes and sizes, packing material, tape etc.

Then list the rooms. Walk through each one and mentally section them off. Packing a section or two a day will keep you sane and allow everything to get done. Make the sections big enough so that by the end of the two weeks you will have covered everyting.

While you are packing sections, designate an area (usually the yard) for downright trash as well as a place for stuff that could be used by someone else. Alot of times a garage sale at the end of the two weeks will get rid of some stuff and get you some cash...otherwise goodwill will often come pickup a large amount of items if you make a call. Also, you can arrange for a trash pick-up or if you have access to a truck, make a few dump runs.

The key is to not overwhelm yourslef (even though it's an overwhelming situation) organize the packing to where you can get a certain amount done each day as well as live a somewhat normal life. Get your stereo out, put on your favorite tunes...and packing goes much quicker and easier :)

This is what works for ME.

I get boxes of course, and packing material. I also have plenty of trash bags. I pick the easiest room to start with. I throw out the trash, and I put stuff that is good but I don't want into a box for the Good Will or Salvation Army. I pack what needs to be kept and label the box, set it aside. Be sure to label clearly, and haul the charity boxes or bags out right away........trunk of car, shed, wherever you choose. I don't mind making trips to the charity collection box........it gets the stuff out of my way, and then no one can change their mind about hauling it back out of the box to keep :D

I find that one complete room makes me feel so much better that I am actually anxious to start the next ;)

If you give yourself a CERTAIN amount to do each day and make sure your goal amount is COMPLETED each day then I promise you won't go insane :) Don't think about the rest of the house, don't think about the fact that you only have two weeks, try to focus on the tasks you have THAT day. Con some friends or family into helping out, ahhh buy 'em pizza and beer and you'll almost have them voluntering :)

Ah i hate moving for that exact reason! So much JUNK and the stupid attachment too it!

I've basically gotten myself a bunch of boxes (wine boxes are great cause they never get too heavy) and a couple bags for trash, donations, and to be recycled. Then i get ruthless! lol! I get rid of anything i haven't used in a long time. Then if there are things i want to keep but don't have a great use for them i put in them in a separate box for storage until i find a place for them or a need for them.
I am a bit crazy about labeling boxes as well. My dear husband puts Office Sh*t on boxes where i like to say, blank CD's, printer paper, pens.... ya know?! Cause if they don't get un-packed right away they are not a nightmare to find something specific in later!

Good luck with your move!

Yep ^^ My rule is....If I haven't used it in 12 full months, it's gone, PERIOD. VERY few sentimental objects make the cut, and I mean VERY few. I have my memories, and if I get to old to remember, then clutter probably won't bring it back either :lol-sign:

Easy to say !!! Hard to do ! My last move involved 40 years of stuff ... plus my 3 kid's stuff ... plus my ancestor's stuff !! Luckily I had more than 2 weeks . Don't throw out history ! Box up and go though later !

Go room by room. Make 3 piles: keep, sell/give, trash. Throw the trash immediately. Decide if you want to sell anything, if not either post it on Freecycle or give it to your local charity. Box up what you are moving with you and label the room.

Moving sucks. I hate it. Good luck!!

setting family heirlooms and photographs aside, i use the rule pack what i use the most first, anything haven't used in a year get rid of. YOu would not believe how much easier my life got when i started following that rule. WHen the house burned i told Kelly if it isn't an art supply or a life essential, don't even ask, just make it go away. If i have to move again i swear i am going to get it down to a backpack. Funny how fewer books you need each time.

I'm moving on the 13th as well, and not looking forward to packing. I think we're going to get some boxes tonight, and I'm going to start packing this week :( I have a hard time throwing away things that I have no need for, which makes it so much harder.

I usually make 3 piles: Keep, give away/sell, and trash. I've already put together a huge bag of clothes to give to Good Will, and I'm sure the pile is going to grow as I continue to pack.

Good luck!
