Sigh. It's been a really long day.

Backstory: My cousin and her husband went to San Diego last Saturday and my mom watched her 5 year old Boxer, Cooper, while she was gone. They were coming back tomorrow, but her husbands brother came back Thursday, so he picked up Cooper.

Yesterday morning, they said she didn't seem right, so he took her to the vet. They had to then rush her to the E-Vet because she had fluid in her lungs. Cooper died last night of congestive heart failure. My mom feels terrible, but she's never had a boxer, and didn't know anything was wrong. Mocha, their dog, would NOT leave Coopers side though. In retrospect, she knew.

RIP Cooper :(

Today I went to my moms house, and my niece was there, but my sister in law was not. I asked where they went, and she told me they just took their lab, Rossi, to the humane society. Rossi does not like strangers until he gets to know you on his own terms. When anyone came to their house, they would have to leave him alone until HE decided to be your friend. He has growled at my niece twice. Once about a month ago, and once the other day. Instead of keeping him away from her until she could figure something out, or taking me up on my offer to take him and find him a home, (was actually gonna see if anyone on here would take him,) she runs off while I'm at petsmart and surrenders him. He will NOT pass the evaluation, so in my eyes, he has already been put to sleep. He was 5.

RIP Rossi, I will miss you more than words can explain.

Hugged 'em nice and tight. Even though Bailey peed on the floor because it's raining. She gets a get out of jail free card this time.

I'm just so sad.

Those are painful to even hear, let alone live them like you did. :(

I sincerely hope they don't get another dog.
They have a chihuahua mix too, but he is fine with the baby. She's 6 months old, so I highly doubt they will be adding another to the house anytime soon. They got him when she was 15, and never trained him, but he is a pound puppy, and had issues from the get go. But he would have probably been fine in a house with no other dogs or kids.

Thanks Dobe. It's been rough. But shes really determined to not have any issues with the Chihuahua, so we took him and Kody to petsmart today and got their nails trimmed, and she wants to bring her chi over for playdates and work on getting him trained. Shes devastated that she had to do this, but she had to think of her baby and thats all I can keep telling myself.

I don't think so 4dogs...not much. There are drugs they can use to help a dog be more comfortable and manage it temporarily. But sooner or later, CHF kills, usually within a year or so. And by the time any symptoms are noticed, it's probably been working it's ugly damage for a while. Fluids build up all around the heart and gets into the lungs, usually from damaged valvues which cause the heart to not pump enough blood. I don't know how common it is in Boxers, but it can strike a LOT of breeds. It's exceedingly common in Dobermans. Getting a dog from the newspaper doesn't necessarily mean that's why the dog was struck with this. These genetic maladies are in most all, if not all the lines in dogs where this is more or less common. Even with dogs from good breeders. It's frequently somewhere in the ancestoral lines and can pop up any time.
