I beg you to give your dog a chance at being a proper indoor dog (cuddling, playing, going outside to play, work on obedience, take up a dog sport, wash him, buy or make him premium food, revolve your life around him--) and compare that to the dogs you had growing up. You will see my and everyone else's point of view then.
Our outside dogs were fed Alpo and bathed twice a year. I didn't brush their teeth or brush them. I would never have thought to rub my face on them or invite them in the house and up on my bed. They didn't know all the 15 or so commands that Wrigley knows. There was much less of a 'bond' than I have with my two indoor dogs now.
I could say that we sufficiently cared for our dogs growing up for the most part--however thinking back had we had an instance where it would have been a $5000 vet bill or PTS--we would have PTS. The bond I have with my dogs now I would sell my home and live in the street rather than put them to sleep over a medical bill.
I think that is perhaps why people feel so passionatly about it is because we know what a strong bond and relationship we have with our dogs now. We find it impossible to comprehend how no matter the provisions that an outdoor dog is as loved and cared for, and feels as secure outdoors than with their master and pack.
I really think it takes getting up every morning, going for a walk, feeding them, training every day, cuddling watching TV, snuggling on the bed, paying for all the crazy vet bills that come up, seeing their tails wag every time you even glance at them in the room to know the true bond that we feel with our indoor dogs. I urge you to give it a try and decide for yourself.
I cannot thank this forum enough for all of the things I have learned. I have learned all about nutrition and make Wrigley his own raw mixture every few weeks. I have learned all about and am now participating in agility which is a wonderful sport and bonding process for you and your pup, I have learned how to appropriately potty train, train 'leave it', and how to deal with all sorts of issues on here.
I can almost garauntee that if you decide to keep this pup indoors for his lifetime--you will never ever ever go back to thinking the outside is better.....
