How long would your dog survive a zombie apocalypse?

LOL because this forum is somewhat dead, I'm bored today and have been watching too much Walking Dead (I decided to re-watch the series from the beginning, I forgot just HOW good it is).:p

Do you think your dog would be a tough survivor in a zombie apocalypse or would be out at the first sign of an outbreak?

I honestly don't think Jackson would last long. I'd of course theoretically do everything in my power to keep him safe (even if that meant throwing him in a backpack or something and carrying him along- which he hates being carried) but realistically, he's terrified of gun shots, he's got stranger danger and doesn't want anyone else picking him up or touching him, and if something came around the corner he'd most certainly bark at it thereby endangering everyone since zombies are attracted to noise. :p Oh he's also not super off-leash reliable so he'd likely run off if not leashed.

So yeah, I'd give him maybeeee a month, if that. Poor guy.
 
I think Leo would do pretty well in a postapocalyptic world. He naturally stays close even if off leash and is really fit and can go for ages. He is super super fast and will eat pretty much anything. He is pretty hardy, but is also small enough that he can be carried for short amounts of time if needed. Best of all, he is pretty much silent and likely wouldn't bark, which would be very useful in many situations.

That being said, I can't at all factor in zombies to these calculations. Would he attack a zombie? No. Run away from one? Probably? Do zombies even attack dogs?
 
hahaha! We were just talking about this when we were watching the latest episode the other day.

Hugo would do alright, probably for the same reasons Leo would. He's off-leash reliable, fast and athletic, but not too big to be carried if necessary. He's actually fast enough that I think he could catch enough food to feed himself, if the food was there. If a zombie was actively attacking me or a close friend though, he would probably go after it and that would be his demise.

River would die quickly. Probably by going up to a zombie for kisses.
 
LOL sounds like you guys have perfect candidates.

Oh meant to add Lola would probably be ok minus the fact that she would likely go up to every zombie and try to kiss them and befriend them. :lol-sign:
 
Tucker would likely run up to and try to kill the first zombie he sees and get eaten. Or he'd get us all killed by barking so darn much. I don't think he'd be around long lol.

Crystal is way too scared of everything, if there were thunderstorms or gunshots or something while we were out she would totally bolt. She'd attract attention by barking at the zombies (and foreign people). She'd be pretty good at dodging them, though. She's technically small enough to be carried but absolutely hates it.

Hero wouldn't survive because he is on the other end of the spectrum. He's a bumbling derp and would probably make too much noise while walking. He also likes to make conversation by woo-wooing so that's probably attract zombies. He'd be wary of zombies probably because of the way they would approach, but I could totally see him allowing one to touch him (and in turn, eat him.) he is off leash reliable though, and unlike Crystal who bolts, if he ever got startled he'd likely stay closer to us. I don't know how he'd deal with gunshots, but he'd be fine with thunder. He's too big to pick up. Hero might survive longer than Crystal but given how it is at the vet, if the zombie attacked Crystal he'd probably start howling at the zombie, and that'd make Hero the next target.
 
Blitz would last till the end. He would probably take up with the local coyotes and take over the world and overthrow the zombies somehow. New world order of the dog.

Everyone else would be eaten first day. There is a litte try there in the corgi brain. But the Dobe brain has to much "oh there is a leaf and I'm sniffing it and it smells good" and he got mauled!
 
I think Daya would do really well. She is 100% reliable off leash, could carry supplies or pull supplies, could alert to people coming so we would not be ambushed, but also has an excellent quiet command so if Zombies were around would could quiet her easily. Her leave it command is great as well so if we had to run she would come with instead of attacking them. If need be I think she could learn to track or help hunt as she already helps find specific cats when we ask her too or kids when needed as well if they are playing hide and seek. If we got attacked by rouge humans she would be an asset for sure with her speed and teeth. So yeah with some added training I think she would do great.
 
Polly would do pretty well I think, not just in a zombie situation but just in general if the world fell apart and she had to live on her own. She's fast as anything so she could outrun the zombies and other hungry dogs, and she's also got high prey drive and could catch her own food for herself, but she sticks by me and wouldn't really wander. Her downfall would be if it got too chilly or rainy and we couldn't find shelter, she deactivates in the rain :rofl1: And she doesn't have any fat reserves, so if prey was scarce she'd get frail pretty quickly.

Astro would be toast. Anxious, neurotic, reactive (he'd be alerting EVERY SINGLE ZOMBIE to where we are with his nonsense), skin isssues, couldn't find food to save his life, not built that well so carrying a pack would be dicey. The only thing that puts him above Polly would be his all-weather coat, but that's it.
 
Of my 4 dogs there is only one I think would be useful in a zombie apocalypse. That would be Scout the older of the 2 Brittanys. She is an awesome hunting dog, so we would eat fine. She is also extremely suspicious (so I could sleep at night with her on watch) and in the final showdown she would be kicking zombie butt right by my side. With Scout I think I could last years.

The other 3, well...
Gael would be my second choice, not because she would be useful in anyway and would just stand around waiting to be fed and to be told what to do, but she is my BFF so since we wouldn't last long we may as well be together.

Camo the Brittany pup is Scouts daughter and has her hunting ability but none of her fire, so would sadly try and make friends with the zombies. I would give us a day.

Kep, bless his little heart, would be my last choice. He is a bit of a sook so like Gael wouldn't be any practical use, but due to his love of routine would spend the whole time whining that he doesn't WANT to eat rabbit for dinner and he can't possibly sleep under a bush, he needs his own special "Keppy bed" at night. I would probably throw myself at the zombies just to end my suffering...
 
Unless his learning curve is faster in an emergency than I've yet been able to appreciate keeping him sheltered as I do, which might be the case I guess, I think he'd die pretty quickly.

He whines loudly when frustrated or anxious which would make him a zombie magnet. He's protective and would alert to them a little too loudly, which would just bring more. His fur is too slick for him to easily make it through a winter outdoors in our area so I don't know how he'd cope as the seasons rolled by. He's okay off-leash but probably not as tight right now as I'd want him to be in an emergency.

Now, if I worked with him more on free heeling and quieting on command he might be okay as long as he had a jacket, but he's not where he'd need to be yet. He would be able to feed himself probably (caught a lot of rats trying to come into the farm house this winter!), his protective instincts wouldn't be bad to have as long as they were under control, he navigates a lot of obstacles pretty well on command, he has a good directed retrieve and he tracks well naturally, and all of those things would be useful. Also he can herd some, which again might be useful in some circumstances... post-apocalyptic homesteading, lol.
 
If we're talking about a zombie apocalypse, Suzie would probably manage to survive on her own. Although she does bark. But she is the ultimate scavenger, so you wouldn't have to worry about feeding her. And she is good off leash and likes to listen to me.

Jack is kinda an idiot, and he's picky about eating, and he likes to bark at scary or new things. But he's also extremely quick and he doesn't like strangers reaching at him. He loves people petting him but he wants to be the one to initiate it. So he'd probably survive if it was just him and Suzie, they could stick together and look out for one another. But he'd lead all the zombies straight to us.
 
Cali would definitely be one of the first to go. She would probably be a little taken back by their movement at first but sooner rather than later, she would run up to one hoping for some attention. :p
 
Gambit would not only survive, but he would probably emerge as some sort of Zombie leader. The walking dead would be right up his alley as minions.

Gimmick would wither and die quickly without a blanket to snuggle into and someone bringing him his yum-yums on a regular schedule.

Glitch would die when he tried to make friends.

They would all outlast me. I recognize that I'm an indoors only, declawed sort of animal, so we'd just be hooking a hose to the exhaust pipe on the car. I don't want to hunt my own food and poop in a hole, thank you. Gimmick and the cats can go with me. Probably Glitch, too.

Our boys would only last a few moments since they would insist on saying hello and becoming friends with the first zombie they see!
 
Well, I have spoken too soon about my dogs lack of ability to kill prey ... he killed a squirrel the other day on our walk, and with remarkable efficiency too, given it was his first time ever doing that. He just grabbed it behind the head and in a few shakes it was dead, I now have no doubt they he could run down rabbits and other small game, and flush birds. Our dogs could even be taught to tag team larger game I think.

As for me I would be fine I think, I am resourceful and I learn fast, I take full advantage of modern comforts and conveniences because I can, they are available, why not? But if I HAD to live without them, then sure, I could. I have used my fair share of outhouses before LOL.
 
i don't think Vic would last a skinny minute now but Pepper would probably reorganize the world and show all how to find food.
