I was just wondering on how to properly and safely train a young pups ears to stand up. Would you recommend doing it? Or is it best to leave them floppy. I'd really like to train luca's ears to stand. Is there a particular method?

....

Ok, ive seen this before, if you have a german shepard puppy, or maybe anoher one, i dunno i saw this on one, but you buy this like little looks like a headband, and you put it around there ears, so that you just leave it there, then when you take them off, i think that they woulld stand up, at least my mommy told me that, lol, I hope that this helps!!! :)

he's a mixed breed, we think border collie/Husky But not sure.... I saw on a GSD webpage that their ears NATURALLY stand up but sometimes they need help. And Luca had a bit of a nip at the hell that i bought him from so i think his won't 'stand on his own
sometimes they do but the other times they flop - they are no doubt cute when they flop but i'd like them to stand up

Oh, if you have a GSD puppy they will flop untill they get older. Then they will start to stand up strait. If he isn't a breed that needs his ears cropped, I wouldn't worry about it to much. Everything I've read about GSDs says that unless the ear is weighted down, they should start to prick up during adolecent stage.

oh, I just read he is a mix breed. I'd just leave them floppy but that is just IMO. There is no really big advantage to having dogs with pointy ears so I'd just leave them natraul. But it just depends what you want. I don't know anything about ways to train the ears to stand up strait, so I can't tell you much.

Bimmer's ears took forever to stand up, but they finally did. They're HUGE, as you can see from his pictures. The left ear took longer to stand up than the right one for some reason, and I'd just about decided it was never going to stand up perfectly all the time, but it did. I've gotta admit he was cute with the tip flopping! If I can ever get the scanner hooked up I'm going to scan in some of those puppy photos of him. Shiva and Kharma were darling puppies, but he was almost too cute . . .

There is something to say about floppy ears.....LESS TROUBLE! Addie's ears flop over (I think they are too cute), but Ham's ears stand wayyyyyy up. That means he catches every dirt particle on the face of the planet...and he is also prone to ear infections. His ears need cleaned constantly. Addie's ears are pink, clean, and have always been healthy. So, if it isn't something necessary..don't bother about it. I've heard of some folks taping the ears up on half a styrofoam cup for a couple weeks. I remember being concerned about Ham having one ear up...one flopped over. I even sent a picture to the breeder asking about it. lol He had them both standing by 5 months, so I had no need to worry. I bet your pup looks adorable just as he is! :D

You can tape their ears. You tape it from left to right and both sided. It should be left on for a month. I know breeders do that on yorkie babies so it might be the same with other doggies.

Debi, that's odd about Hammie's ears getting so dirty. You might want to check for mites. Bimmer's ears stay spotless, and as big as they are and with all the holes he sticks his head in after varmints you'd think they'd stay absolutely filthy.

Ham's just been to the vet and they didn't see anything abnormal. They always check his ears since he had such a bad prior infection. I've actually never seen a dog's ears get so dirty. It's not just me, either...you can see his dirty ears a mile away. Course, it's better now that everything is frozen and there isn't so much dirt to get into. :)

Debi that is strange. Duke's one ear that stands stays cleaner than his other one that flops a bit. I'm amazed at the difference there is when I clean them.

You can't make stand up whats not meant to. If the puppy is a border collie x then borders ears aren't meant to be pricked. Unless you have them cropped like a dobermann then it probably wont happen. But I'm sure you will love him just the same.

Ohhh no doubt i will, hes quite the bundle of personality. It looks like they are actually standing up a little bit more these days. Somedays they'll stand up, somedays they'll flop, somedays one will stand and one will flop, he's still young so im just gonna wait and see what happens

Bimmer's did that one-ear-stand-up-one-ear-flop until he was about 6 months old. He's got HUGE ears for a dog his size. We joke that he's like the Wolf in Little Red Riding Hood . . . my, what big ears you have, and eyes and teeth! :D
