How do I fit all my dogs in my vehicle and what vehicle do I have? Well...it doesn't matter what vehicle I have. I have Chihuahuas. :rofl1:

(They ride in a crate (molded plastic-Vari-kennel) in the back of my Toyota Rav 4, which is a mid-sized SUV.)

The car harnesses I have are regular harnesses with handle attachments on them that swivel. It helps with the twisted-upness a LOT. Murphy was the same way as Frodo, with twisting up and getting stressed out but he eventually realized that I was not going to let him out (although I did untwist him of course) and now he just chills in the backseat. He's never had a problem riding in the car though - crate yes, car no.

If he's not harnessed he likes to ride with his front feet on the console and back feet on the back seat and sniff the driver all the way to wherever we're going. :lol-sign: It's highly entertaining when I'm not driving.
There isn't a swivel on mine, but I attached it to a carabiner, which makes it swivel-ish. His problem is the ha can't sit forward, cause his back is too long. He has to either sit turned towards the middle of the car, or towards the window. When he decides to try and turn the other way he tries to do it with his face turned towards the back of the seat (derp derp) instead of towards the front of the car. Ive tried to teach him this multiple times, when he's stressed he doesn't remember.

I've been sitting in the back with him and having Ryan drive whenever possible to try and get him more acclimated.

Izzie rides loose shot gun or back seat, her choice. I have a 2 door car so setting up a crate in the back seat just doesn't jive, same with clipping her into a seat belt back there. Might crate or belt when i get a new car.

I would really REALLY like to get Frodo riding in a crate again, but he has such a primal freak out as soon as the car starts. He is fine sitting in the crate in the car, as long as the car is off (he had to for Nosework), but as soon as you turn the key he starts spinning and uber stressing.

I think I'm going to go throw the crate in my car when Ryan returns it today. No excuse to not get started now that it is above -20 degrees.

Oooooh yeah, Murphy has the same problem. He's far too long to turn properly and since I can't always untangle him right away he's finally realized that he should just stay facing whatever direction he happens to be. Lol. Poor Frodo, I hope he figures it out soon!

When I had the RAV4, the dogs would just ride loose in the back. I've fit 2 people and five dogs in there before, with everyone having a enough room so they didn't get cranky.

Now with the Accord and it's just Sawyer, he rides in the backseat. I have a seatbelt harness for him and I need to start using it again. He wants to ride up front, since that's where he rode a lot in the RAV, but after my accident, that's a no go.

Durned long dogs :p
My problem (and the main reason I want him in either a seatbelt or a crate) is that it is all highway/freeway driving here so I can't just pull off the road every time he gets twisted. In Pennsylvania just scooting around town I didn't mind having him loose because max speed was like 25mph on most roads. Here I'm usually not doing less than 50mph, so if I do ever get in an accident it is much more likely to be serious.

This is how the malinois ride.

The pit bulls ride in the back seat of the cab.
OMG that's so crazy looking. Did you buy it or is it custom made? I thought about making a setup for our dogs to ride in the bed crated somehow so they can't jump out and hurt themselves, but the only major things that prevented me from trying to figure out a way to make it work was 1) what if the vehicle rolled over and 2) how to protect them from the outside elements, keep them cool when it's hot out and warm when it's cold out...

Prior to the box we used plastic crates with a tie down strap. I'll look for a photo of that.

I don't worry about them getting cold really but we'll be piping a swamp cooler into the box when the summer hits. It is made of aluminum so it will not get as hot as you would think and it's actually safer than the inside of the car when the car is not running.

We bought it from someone who had it custom made for their truck. :)

I just have a regular sized SUV- Mercedes ML- and I just put them in the backseat, usually with seatbelts, sometimes without if I can't find their seatbelts. Bad mother... I will say our old car didn't have leather and it was soooo hard to keep clean with a muddy dog getting in and out. I'm really glad to have leather again- it makes the biggest difference for us.

Unless I strap them to the roof, dogs don't fit in my car. It's a Mk4 GTI with no rear seats. Plus it's super loud and stiff. If it's enough to annoy me, I imagine Rumor would absolutely hate it.

Lots of great pictures, I actually cant fit my dogs crates into my car, I own an Eclipse and two big dogs and if they go in my car the crates stay home and they just sit in the seat. I suppose if I absolutely needed the crates for something they are collapsible and I could bring them. Also when driving it is difficult to get the dogs to stay off of me.

Before Zach and I split he bought a Jeep Patriot with the intention that it would fit all our future dogs/kids. We were big Ford people, but he's been happy with the jeep for the past year (it was used, but barely...an '08 maybe?). It was really roomy. You could seatbelt or crate a whole pack of dogs back there.

Awesome truck + Awesome Dogbox = AWESOME!!!!

The dogbox has 8 compartments that are big enough to easily fit 2 50Lbs dogs but not so big it can't keep a smaller 30-40Lbs dog warm if solo. I can also fit 3-4 crates in the bed of my truck OR fill it up with straw and run a chain to hold 6 dogs. I can only fit a LG plastic crate on the back seats in the cab.

Drop system with enough spots for every dog along with me to be able to be outside at the same time. For extra spots I can run a chain from one tire to the other and both sides of my truck when needed. That sort of drop system can get a bit annoying though. My preference is using the eyebolts on the trailer first. Often easier to just drop the dogs in 2 shifts rather than running the chain.

That being said when its just my 3 I often simply have them loose on the back seat in the cab. I always have a crate in the back of the truck too

I am a bad doggy mom - I open the door of my '98 Honda Civic coupe and say "get the eff in the car."

I can fit Bear, Rage and Goose with all of them sitting in the backseat... on Mondays it's Rage & Liz off to training classes... when it's just my three girls + Goose I'm relatively certain I can fit them... I don't know, it's like a clown car in there.
Get 'em crammed in there tight enough and they CAN'T get thrown around, lol.

I've got seat a seat belt harness that's handy, although Kharma in the back seat of the 318 is a pretty snug fit since both front seats are back pretty far and have high seat backs anyway. There's not much way for her to get thrown, and my car's too old to have airbags so that's not an issue.

I don't drive currently, but when we've traveled with the dogs, we usually just held the little dogs in our laps. We went to Alabama to stay with friends once with Holly, and she just sat in the back seat with me.

When we go to the park/petsmart, I hold Violet on a leash in the back.

When I'm finally able to drive myself, I hope to get a small suv/station wagon/jeep that I can fit a crate in the back of.

We currently have a ford freestar van, and I *may* be inheriting it when we get another family car, and if I do, I can fold the entire back seat down (it has 2 front seats, 2 middle seats, and then a large back seat in the far back that seats 3 people, and I wouldn't need it) to give me ample space for 2 or more crates.
