How do I train my dog to poop outside of the house?
I want her to give a message of some sort before she wants to go, so i can let her out and than she can take care of her business. I am planning to keep my puppy inside until my fence is made and that is why I dont want her to poop everywhere in the house or else my parents would freak since they are neat freaks.

I'm not sure how much I can help with this - training my 12 week old puppy has been my first experience - but I wanted to let you know it does get better!

I find Buddy (that's my little guy) tends to sniff around a lot more just before he has to go to the bathroom - that's his signal. When I see him doing that, I ask "Do you have to go outside? Do you have to go potty?" and it's gotten to the point now where, if he does indeed need to "go", he'll start jumping up on me, race towards to door, and sometimes give a bark or two! I was so excited when he first did that! It's starting to click with him! Whoo hoo! (The things that gives one a thrill when one is puppy training! )

When we get outside I say "Okay Buddy, go potty!" and then when he starts to "go", I praise the heck out of him in a happy, excited voice. "Good boy, Buddy!! Good potty!!" It's really quite a spectacle. lol. It's working though. So, hang in there!

Mine typically play for about 15 minutes or so after they eat and that seems to trigger the need for a trip outside. Keep an eye on her and make a mental note of her pattern and you'll stand a good chance of getting her trained.

Serena: In my experience with housebreaking puppies you watch for signals that they are about to "go".

during my golden's housebreaking, she would tell us she had to "go" by just getting in our face and jumping on us. she doesn't anymore now that she's fully housebroken and she paces some when she needs to go out. plus she's an inside and outside dog so she has a schedule that she's used to.

we didn't have to use this with penny, but it was something i read about. in an area where they have a habit of "going" you can put down an area of newspaper for them to go on. once they start going on the paper, gradually make the area smaller and smaller until eventually there's none left and they'll not know where to go other than outside (and after they "go" take the dog outside and praise him). i think it'd make it easier as well if you made a habit of using the same door to go outside.

it took us awhile to get penny fully house-trained, and then i've heard from some people that get their pups trained in 2 weeks. so it's definitely a process- just stick with it! :)
