Hi ,just to ask,
buffy is crate trained and touch wood we never have any accidents in there.
shes let outside as soon as we wake, return from work etc.And during the evening she has free run of the house, and is let outside at regular intervals to go buisness as we call it.The problem is even though accidents inside the house are very few and far between ,this is due to us regulary letting her out
as she never seems to want to go outside[if no one goes outside with her she barks and whines untill she is let back in].
My question is to get to the point,Shes not letting me know she needs to go outside so far its guess work and letting her out at regular intervals.
How do i get her to let me know?
ANY HELP would be much appreciated.:D

here is my 2 cents, i just got finished with housetraining 2 pups. the way we did it may not work for eveyone but, it did for me, so here it is. We have a backdoor that we leave open during the day from the time we get up til we go to bed, and that way the pups can go in and out all day long, and during their play time they can go potty as well. When we first brought Thunder home we would take him out each and everytime he woke up, no matter what time of day/night it was. then after a few weeks he knew that the backdoor was where he needed to go in order to GO. within a few weeks he was sleeping thru the night.. so, cinni was easier, because she would follow what thunder would do, and now, they both sleep thru the night. TADA!!

now, i know this may not work for everyone, as we have an open schedule and that is why it did not take so long to train them, but, we did it. so, as long as you the ability to wake up when buffy does and take her out when she is up then it will be easy as pie.

anyways, good luck hope that helped.

OMG she's very cute!

Wrigley never asks to be let out unless he is going to poop-splode (if you know what I mean) this is usually when his tummy isn't feeling well and he'll start crying or whimpering.

Neither dog 'let's us know' when they need to go out (unless it is like the above mentioned situation)--they are let out at regular intervals (always right way out of the crate and around every 3 hrs they are out in the house) and we haven't had too many problems. I really think that that is true potty training is that Wrigley never asks to be let out and would hold it till he exploded (he has held it over 12 hrs before) because he doesn't want to mess in the house....

4-5 months is still so young to expect her to hold herself fully.

Do you use a command when you want her to perform her toilet duties???

Is she marking anywhere in particular or is it where ever she takes the fancy???

hi again, We use the command Go buisness when we want her to go toilet [still not sure she understands this fully yet though.
When she does have an accident, she doesnt really have a favorite spot, shes a pro at waiting until your not looking though,as its really hard to catch her in the act.

Ok then,

I think we need to go back to the basics,....as if you had just brought her home.

Now the method that I used, which was touched on previously, is to take her out every half hour or so. After every meal, play, sleep etc.

Have some treats ready on you at all times,....stuffed in yr jeans, coat, jacket and so on, so your never caught without.

Take her out into the garden,........and then wait until she performs, the key to this is to wait until she has toileted. Yes I know you maybe out there for up to an hour, but this is a really effective way of TT.

Now at the exact moment she performs, eg when you see her squatting, give the key word,.....Go, toilet, wee wee, together with Good

So you would be saying 'Good wee wees' what ever word you have choosen use a voice tone that she responds too well,.....high voice, cute voice,...you get the point.;)

Go up to her, when she has finished or she may come to you,....give a treat and praise thoroughly.

Now repeat this every single time you want her to toilet. Pretty soon she will associate you saying,....come on toilet,...with going outside and urinating on cue.

The key to this tho, as with any form of training, is consistency, you must form a routine.

At the moment she has no routine, so doesnt feel the need to perform when you want her too, and also doesnt understand that you want her to either.

HTH and let us know how it goes.
