2 falls ago we rescues a Rat terrier mix puppy. He was adorible. and infested with worms and very anemic and sickly. ripped at me and my moms heart strings. WELL He is my moms. This is very hard for me to go through with being as it is not my nature but what my parents say goes.. I have been fighting it for months but now my time is running out. Our little sweetheart has an evil side., actually he is doing what he is bred to do. He is a chicken killer and if you know farmer logic... dog kills chicken dog gets shot. Well During the winter he took on this habit he killed My mama hen who was raising 11 chicks.. I fought for him. I won. He a couple weeks ago killed my buffy rooster. and severly injured one of my ducks. I fought again I won. 3 nights ago he tour apart a 4 day old chick. Mind you we are not letting him loose he escaped and it all happens to fast. Much less of tie him to a stake forever away from our house there is nothing we can do to prevent this. I have tried everything exept the cruel. We have our birds penned right now to prevent him form doing it but he is now going to the neighbors and trying. The neighbor says he will shoot him on sight. I cannot keep him knowing that if my 4 or 2 year old sisters open the door and he runs out and kills a chicken we have to shoot him . that ius a brutal death. So I am trying desporatly to rehome him to someone with a yard so he can still run ..... lil kids so he can play maybe other dogs. I will be getting him fixed within the next few weeks (waiting on a good paycheck) Like I said he is not my dog... I would for the life of me keep him forever.. I am not one ot easly part with my beloved pets but its either this or he will be shot. I really need help I need someone I can trust I have spent hours crying over this and now finally have the guts to ask for help so someone please help me and dont critizise be b/c I have to rehome a pet. He is not mine I have no say anymore as to if he can stay. Please help me. here are some pics. His name is Tabby.

Tabby is very cute! I would say rehoming him is the best thing to do though. I know you love him and it hurts to let him go, but its the best thing for Tabby. Maybe you could list him on Petfinder. Little cute dogs like him are usually adopted quickly, but it may take time. You've done a lot for this dog, you are not abandoning him. You are loving him enough to let him go somewhere where he can be happy.

Believe it or not it hurts to hear you say that but it is so true but i cannot help but feel the total loss of what I will be losing. H eis my singing buddie. He is the only dog I know that when you sing he will howl along. My dad is a pastor and since we moved we have a home fellowship which means the dogs get right in on this and we will be worshiping and he will be on the floor belly up legs up in the air howling along and snorting for good measure. I dont feel as though anyone would understand him the way I do. What if the person doesnt see him the ay we do? what if he never gets to sing again? What if he hates me for giving him away? What if he emotionally breaks down from culture shock I know Im being totally erational but really I dont know how anyone can just poof give up a part of their family this is really going to haunt me ..its already haunting me and I havent even done it yet. My biggest fear is that I may never see him again ... or the person wont tell me how he is doing or just ignore my calls or emails . I want to ask my mom if this bugs her but I dont want to upset her she told me I was suppose to be supportive of her discision..but how can i without hating myself in the process. I know he isnt mine in name but he is a part of my family. I would nor will I ever let my Lovie or Lady ever leave my sight never The thought of something ever happening to them makes my stomache ache. In fact I am aching right now because its a reality Tabby has to go. b4 I would just shrug it of like a whatever but I really believ they are serious. I am like telling them but mom I can make a doggie door ot of my room and by this huge massive fenced in thig and he can run outside and the birds can be safe. I mean I wouldnt put it passed myself if they would let me I would. He is so good with cats .. sheep goats but jsut not chickens. But how can I fault his breed. i am lost here and I am sorry for babbling it happens when I am upset.

Does anyone know how to stop him from killing chickens...anything I will give it a whirl.

BTW we had a rescue contact us off petfinder and she came and said he was to big and that are best hope was to let him kill another chicken then beat him with it then tie it to his neck and let it rot off and he will be cured. WELL I THINK NOT WHAT A SICKO !!!!! well we sent her off in a hurry. so dont even say that ok? I wont try that.

There is one option I am thinking of, but I'm sure I'd be blasted for even suggesting it. The best thing to do for now is all about management: keep him inside the house, and when bringing him outdoors, keep him on a leash at all times.

A RESCUE contact said that??  I don't blame you for not taking her advice!

Unfortunately, you can't train out prey drive. You can control it, teaching a dog to walk calmly by chickens on leash for example, but you can't train him NOT to want to kill chickens. Your options are to either rehome him or somehow keep your sisters from letting him out. Perhaps you could baby-gate him into a room so that he can't run out the door?

herschel Thank you so much for caring enough to make an offer but I think I want to rehome him myself so I can test the adopters out. Also I would rather he go straight to his new home rather than be fostered get attached to his new parents only to leave again. It would just seem to confusing for him . Thanks though. I will contact you if for some reason he has to go to save his life.
DO you think by fixing him he will simmer down a bit???
