Which heart worm meds do you consider most effective and the best in terms of health? (if that makes sense)...I hate having to use heartworm, but the mosquitos are pretty bad this year so I have no choice..Messina's on Revolution...

My vet recommends HeartGuard Plus. I would never take a chance with my pets health by not giving a heartworm preventitive. That is one horrible disease and a bad way for a pet to die.

I use Interceptor. It's just as effective as Heartguard Plus and a bit safer as well.

I also use HeartGuard Plus. I lost a childhood dog to heartworms and I won't let it happen again. Plus I live in the DEEP south. We have the **** bloodsuckers in January. Not using something proven would be wreckless on my part.

Wow...I don't think I've heard of interceptor...I'm going to ask my vet about it tomorrow...

Someone mentioned it was safer than heartguard? why is that? What is the difference? I was thinking of switching to the heartguard for the rest of the summer...but I'd like to know more about the interceptor...

I use the "Safeheart" dose of Interceptor for my crew, it's FDA approved too.

Interceptor seems to have the best track record where safety is concerned.

It is correct that heartworms cause horrible disease, but not every dog is at risk for infection, and frequent dosing with chemicals can be just as harmful, causing a pet to die. Heartworm preventives aren't without risk either!

After doing some thorough research, I have made the conscious decision not to use a HW preventive for now, since there is only a minuscule chance that my dog would actually become infected.

I do have a HW test done every 6 months though. :)

I hate having to use the meds...but I'm afraid...when I go camping there are mosquitos around..and last time messina had bumps all over her. I'm not sure what the heartworm risks are like in Ontario...and its hard to find out...vets don't have records really...

I went to the vet and got the heartguard plus...I only use heartworm meds when I really have to...when I go camping...so this year I've only used three doses and the forth one will be for august...and that's it for me...

Does anyone know of any reliable holistic alternatives to heartworm prevention? I'd be interested in reading up on it...

we use interceptor as well...do you need to continue to give your dog heartworm pills forever? Is there a shot the vet can give instead?

Google "natural hw prevention" and you will get a few ideas, but I'm iffy on them and I know of a holistic vet who worries about the dosages, if the owner will do it right, etc so never would recommend them.

Jackson - there was a shot (Proheart 6) that was suppose to prevent HW for 6 months, but it was recalled. I wouldn't go that route, even if another came back on the market.

I'm starting to wonder if I should give HW to Messina for the month of August now...I think she got 2 mosquito bites this month...and I'm not even sure if it was a mosquito or a fly...I haven't seen any outside...I don't know...

Why can't all mosquitos just go extinct lol
