Well we've got four dogs in the house right now. Doorknob and Shotgun in addition to Georgia and Kenai. Doorknob is a Lab x Pit x Shepherd who was VERY beaten and abused. She is very scared of people. She is always cowering and crouching down and everytime someone calls her name she thinks she is in trouble. She was named Doorknob because she is very dumb. I think it's because of how abused she was in confused her as far as what humans want. But she just can't seem to comprehend anything. Jumping, for example. She knows "down" and will get down once you tell her, but she ALWAYS has to have her paws on you. One paw on your leg or your knee, ALWAYS has to have her paws on you. I'm not sure if she's just dumb or confused or stubborn, but she is very sweet. Although she was very mistreated, she doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She slept with me last night and always had to be touching me. I want to rename her because everytime anyone says her name she thinks she's going to get beaten. I'm not sure if we'll be keeping her or not, and I'm not sure how to work with a dog that is so pshycologically damaged (her head was stood on, she was beaten, hit with sticks, kicked, etc.) but she is a sweetheart. My uncle does hardwood floors and he did floors for a woman who had Doorknob and a backyard full of other dogs. My uncle has a very soft heart and after seeing the woman hit her multiple times while he was working he asked if he could buy her for $100. She accepted the offer and my uncle brought her to my house and left her with me. He asked me to work with her and then he would take her.

Shotgun is a Border Collie puppy. Yesterday evening around 7:00 I found him standing on our porch staring at our door. I let him in and dried him off (he was soaking wet and very muddy) and then put him back out to see if he would go home. He didn't leave our porch and at 9:00 I let him in. I gave him a bath and he is SUCH a cool dog. I know I've talked crap about Border Collies on here before and MAN am I SORRY! I definetly understand the breed more and he really is a cool dog. He is SO smart and eager to please. He hated bath time and being in the bathroom. But, if I ask him to enter the bathroom he will as long as he gets praise when he goes in. He also hates the crate but will go in it without hesitation if he is asked to as long as you make a fuss over him. He always wants his head in my lap. He has a problem with marking the house, so he's on a leash right now laying down right beside me. He really is an awesome dog. I'm not sure if he's lost or if somebody dumped him, but I have put FOUND DOG signs up and we'll see what happens.

Aw poor Doorknob. It might actually help to change her name, because the word "doorknob" could be a cue that bad things are about to happen. With a dog like that, you need to go really slowly. I wouldn't try to work on any actual training yet, just let her get used to your house. Don't raise your voice at her, and try not to correct her, and if you must (as for jumping up or something), do so as gently as possible. She is clinging to you because she is anxious and looking for comfort. Talk in high, calm happy voices, and just generally focus on being calm.

Maybe in about a week, you can get some treats, and try to work on some basic training, such as "sit". Keep the training sessions upbeat and happy, and always try to end on a happy note. Dogs like poor little D can and do make great progress with patience and time. I saw a Shiba Inu who was TERRIFIED of people who had come from a hoarder and had NO socialization go to a foster home and become a wonderfully friendly dog. It can be done!

Change her name! The poor thing has such bad associations with "Doorknob" that she must have a panic attack every time she hears it.

Shotgun sounds absolutely adorable! After all, there must be a reason bc's are so popular.

I was going to say that when I began reading her sad, sad story....to immediately change her name. What kinds of monsters are there who are so cruel to animals? Was this woman reported? You can speak a new name, give a treat...repeat over and over for a few minutes. Like it was already said, if you keep her and she starts to settle in, you can work on the jumping by merely turning your back and ignoring for a sec till she gets off...then give her what she wants. She can be turned around I bet with gentle, patient handling and some time to learn to trust again.

I doubt very much that she's dumb. Dogs, humans, anyone would shut down with that abuse and be afraid to try anything, so how could she possibly learn anything? I wouldn't push too much on her for a while as far as really active training, but if you utilize capturing behavior and reinforce with a toss of a treat every time she does something you like, you won't have to over whelm her with a lot of interaction or speaking...if that makes her nervous...just a quiet toss of food when she does something you like. I bet she'll come around eventually. Toker was abused and no one would guess it now, she's over-the-top out going and friendly. I think too, that she has an inherently stable temperament, which helps. Good luck. If you can't keep her, maybe you can foster her for a while and see how she comes along.

I hope Shotgun gets a good home. He sounds like a sweet dog who just needs a little bit of encouragement. Kudos to you for taking care of these guys.
