There was a lady there with an extremely young puppy. The pup couldn't weigh more than a few ounces, and its eyes weren't even open yet! :yikes:

This lady was casually passing this poor, tiny pup from person to person, and holding it up to other dogs to let them sniff the pup. She was boasting about how "cute" the pup was, and that she just had to bring the pup with her to show off. She then started talking about the rest of the litter she had at home, and how there were six originally, but only four remained because the rest "just up and died, like puppies sometimes do."

All I could think about was how this sad little infant was going to end up catching some kind of illness (since it was definately unvaccinated) and would bring it home to the rest of its litter.

Poor little things. :(

if the pup is still nursing and hopefully since the eyes are still closed it is, the mother's immuntities will protect it for now.

I wonder what the policy of Petsmart is concerning such young puppies being within their stores?

Something tells me that if the lady is that ignorant, then the mother dog probably isn't up to date on vacs.

The last time we did a petsmart adoption day, I was unloading our dogs and walked right by this woman with her 5 weeks old teacup poodle puppy. The thing looked horrible. It's little eyes were bugging out, it was skinny and I could see the fleas when I passed it. All I could think was "Lady, your dog is going to die, and you are standing here buying outfits for it."
I wanted to say something, but there are very strict rules about what the rescue groups can say to customers and I was in uniform. I did say something to the manager, so he could politely suggest that the puppy be looked at by the in store vet. I love that manager.

excuse me here, but why didn't you empower yourself to tell her what you just said here. you had a chance to educate this ignorant person.

now if you did say something to her, then more power to her.... but if you didn't say anything to her and then come on here complaining about the matter, what a wasted effort.

the next time you, ANYONE sees something like this, please speak up and educate the ignorant people out there that do things like this.

There was a 5 week old pup crawling around on the floor once when I was in a petsmart.. I know because I asked the age. I asked management and I was told she needed it in a cart.. They talked to her she dragged it through the store on the ground anyhow. Think it was a black lab.

I thought the store required all dogs to be leashed and vaccinated? At least that's what the sign on the front of ours says. Maybe that's only a local policy though.

Our petsmarts all say "Vaccinated and leashed pets welcome",
but I doubt most stores would uphold the policy unless another
owner in the store complained about the risk to their pet.

The mother's immunity should help protect the puppy but that won't help with the stress of being taken away from momma and handled so much. Poor puppy, it probably doesn't stand a chance to live.

I think ours only way leashed pets welcome, but honestly I've never looked hard. Anyone walking around with a 5-week puppy (which they shouldn't have in the first place unless they own the mother) probably isn't paying much attention to the signs anyway. And if they DO own the mother <smacks forehead> then they really, really have no clue if they are in Petsmart with the puppy . . . probably BYB.

Considering that there is oodles of info saying don't take your puppy home until its 8 weeks . . . you think they read the signs at Petsmart?
