First, the back ground story. We adopted Blackie, our Lab that recentally passed away, when he was around six months old from a family that picked him up as a stray and couldn't keep him. So we don't know if he was a pure lab for sure, but the general thought is that if he wasn't 100% pure Lab, he was 99.99% pure Lab.

Fast forward three years, and my parents still hadn't gotten him neutered. I have no idea what their thought process on that was, but he was still intact and left to roam the countryside. That summer we had a dog dumped out at our house. (I actually discovered who used to own her and they said they just took her down a back road and left her because they didn't want to deal with her anymore. *sigh*)
We decided to keep her, and I, in my seven year old mentality, named her Brownie since we had a Blackie. LOL My parents were suprised to find out that she was not only a female, but an intact female. They discovered this when she went into heat. And intact female + intact male = puppies! Brownie whelped ten gorgeous pups, one of which was Rose. Brownie passed away when the pups were around five weeks old due to being hit by a car from the ONE neighbor we had (I still haven't quite forgiven them for that), but needless to say we kept Rose.

I've puzzled over what all Rose is mixed with over the years, and thought I'd ask you guys what you thought. Since Blackie was a Lab, the Lab in the mix is obvious. But I honestly don't know what to think of when I see photos of Brownie. My guess was a Shepherd/Cattle Dog mix, but I just don't know. She did have a bobbed tail, but I don't know if it was natural or if it was docked. She was on the smaller size...maybe 50 pounds? She would herd our neighbor's cattle (he was fine with it as long as she didn't stress them), dig craters in our field to find mice, LOVED to run and chase things, and had the most high pitched yip you've ever heard. Very sweet dog and she had a steller temperment. Rose takes after her alot, only she has a less shrill voice, thank heaven.

So here is a picture of Blackie in his younger years - he's the sire:

The two photos we have of Brownie - she's the dam (and yes, she was moved out of that box into more comfortable quarters to raise the pups - she was an outside country dog and my parents just wanted to get her indoors as quickly as they could and that was all they had availible):

The puppies:

And Rose, over various stages of life (I think it's cool how she had dark brindling patterns as a pup, but then got lighter as a teenager, and now that she's a senior she's back to very dark brindling):

So, guess the mutt! ^_^ What mix do you think Brownie was? I have always labeled Rose as a Lab/GSD/ACD mix, but does anybody see anything else going off of the parents? I've always wondered about maybe some Australin Shepherd in her due to Brownie's bob, or maybe some type of terrier because of the ratting/digging instinct both she and Brownie shared. But I just don't know!

I think Brownie may have had collie in her, either sheltie or rough collie. You would get herding from that. She could also be a german shepherd mix, judging from the coloring and fur. The tail looks like it was cut off. A vet could have told you by looking at it.
