Good dry dog food as a supplement

Hello! My name is Julitza, I am the proud mommy of 3 year old Taina!

Taina is currently on a homecooked diet. She has always been a terribly picky eater, has always been very skinny has been plagued by slight allergies. Ive tried many different foods (Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Eukanuba) and the best results have been with Eukanuba, even though I am aware it is not a Class A food. I'd rather not try again with Eukanuba as she started to lose patches of fur with it after a while!

Anyway, because she has always been so terribly skinny I decided to just homecook for her! She has put on a pound or two and has maintained her shiny coat. To make a long story short, I am looking to supplement her homecooked meals with a good quality dry dog food, with simple ingredients (no poultry or fish). Any suggestions?

Also, she has always had a HORRIBLE breath problem lol. I am doing regular brushings and will have her scheduled at the vets for a cleaning but i'd like some advise on how to handle this problem. Thanks!

If the dog needs to put on weight you might try the fat balls recipe I have. It contains egg yolks so it might not work if your dog is allergic to chicken. You could always leave them out I guess.

Fat Balls (Weight Gain)

1 lb hamburger
1 package cream cheese
1 dozen egg yolks
1 jar all natural peanut butter
about 1 cup rolled oats soaked in milk
1 jar wheat germ

Mix it up and keep in the fridge.

As for the bad breath, you need to verify that it is not a dental problem. My little pap had very bad breath from day 1. We stated using Zymox water bowl additive and it has helped. Got it at Hollywood Feed. You need to wash out the bowl every day and fill with fresh water/additive. This will also prevent that slime that can form on the inside of the water bowl.

Thank you for your reply! She is actually at a very good weight now, about 9-10lbs I believe. Her spine is no longer poking out lol, she still has a nice waistline and no tummy. But she has never been a fan of dry dog food so since starting her homecooked meals she has put on just the right amount of weight.

What Im just looking for is a nice kibble that I can leave out for her to munch on during the day, so shes not constantly chasing me throughout the house begging for food! I also dont want her to be constantly searching for food as I know some Doxies tend to overeat and she is one of the few that I have seen at a healthy weight. Vet is absolutely crazy about her, from her coat to her weight

I would find something other than kibble as a supplement. What have you been cooking so far? What all are you including? There are different supplements out there, but you need to supplement with the correct one to be sure you covering what is actually missing in the diet.

I have really come to like the Zignature dog food. I have been using it now over a year with my boy who had developed allergies at 7 years old. They have several flavors and are limited ingredients and I find that I can rotate through the flavors with no issues. And it is not break the bank expensive. He no longer licks his feet until they are stained and hairless and no goopy ears.

When you say "no poultry or fish" does this exclude typical lower rank ingredients such as fish oils or chicken fat etc..or do you just mean the top main meat ingredients?

Hi Julie Anne, just want to say that puppies become adults at 12 months of age and this is the time when you need to switch their food from puppy food to adult food. At different age dogs need different amount of supplements and nutrients, just like we humans do. Homemade food is not bad for dogs, but yes, they do have some side effects. When the proper amount of supplements are not given to them, they may suffer from upset stomach, diarrhea or vomiting. Sometimes, even the smallest change in a dog’s diet can cause an adverse reaction.
