Hey there, I'm looking for suggestions for Golden Retriever breeders for my Mom. She had a female GR from the time she was 17 up into her late 20s/early 30s, and she's looking at getting another in a couple of years, now that almost all of us kids are grown and gone. She prefers darker/red ones, and doesn't like the look of what's winning in the confo ring, would much prefer working/sporting (dual confo is fine too) if that's do-able within the requirements. It would be an active pet, she is a runner and wants a dog for a jogging companion (3 miles 3-4 times a week, looking to get back into it more). Able to settle well in the house (with training) is a must, looking for a softer, more biddable dog. She would definitely prefer a dog that is very attached to it's person. PM suggestions are great, also if you have more questions feel free to ask. Also if you have me on the FB and want to PM, it would be greatly appreciated if you messaged me there instead, I often forget to check here.:)

Thanks!

This is the breeder that I closely looked into, I ended up not going with goldens but she is a wonderful breeder
working line, small scale, active, healthy dogs http://www.sunfiregold.com/
The website isn't the best but she's very well known and produces some great dogs.

I would also look at foxrun and cloverdale

all around new england!

Facebooked you as well

I have LONG list of new england golden breeders that I made for a relative. It's just the basics...do they health test, do they do stuff with their dogs, etc. Most of them are show breeders (or show and sport...mostly obedience) though, as that's what my aunt and uncle would be best suited for. where abouts are you looking?

Awesome! So here's my overly long list. I lean towards being more inclusive than exclusive, I don't want to eliminate a good breeder because I don't have all the info. That's for you to decide either on your own or by talking to the breeder. So just a fair warning that some of these breeders might not be so great, just be sure to look into them more. Just FYI for goldens you want to see at least hips, elbows, eyes, and cardiac tested for. I will also send you a PM with a little more info.

Awesome list! When I'm looking for breeders, I'll ask you.

Gaylans. I really love there dogs. If I ever get a Golden, I'd consider getting a dog from here. They breed for Multi-Purpose dogs. Many of dogs are titlex in hunting. There dogs are also in agility, conformation, agility, obedience,& rally.
They test for heart, elbows, hips, eyes, & thyroid.
http://www.gaylans.com/dogs.html

They are in NY, hope that isn't a problem.

The Gaylan dogs I have met have been nice dogs. Only trouble might be that there is usually (AFAIK) a long competition waiting list so it may be difficult to get a pet puppy. But even if that's the case she's been in the breed a long time and may be able to recommend other breeders with pups available/planned for your timeline.

Several of the breeders listed in the long post have heavier built dogs who are unlikely to make good all-weather jogging partners. Just something to keep in mind.

Not a New England breeder but I'm friends with an Indiana Golden breeder, Golden Clover Retrievers. I've helped out with a few litters and they're all very nice dogs.

breeder in VA

I'm tagging onto this info-filled thread. My cousin in Central VA is looking for a pet Golden puppy this Spring or Summer. Her priorities are health and temperament. Like the OP, she prefers reds.

She has a husband, two sons between 6 - 9yo, two adult dogs, one cat, chickens, goats, and cattle on a large property with pool, creeks, and a river.

Any suggestions? She is wishing for puppies within driving distance.

I am Milbrose and I want to clarify on this thread. Emmett was never bred, I never claimed to have all clearances on him. I do not use my boys at stud and he was never used with any girl. He does not have any of his clearances because he has a thyroid issue and while he is intact as i believe it is healthier for him, he was never used ..... Alex was owned by a co owner in california. He did eventually get all of his clearances before he was used at stud. We do not have him with us in NH and we have since signed off on him so we no longer own him. I never have made claims about all of my dogs having all clearances. Right now we have Kenna and Rhys as well who do not have any health clearances but neither are being bred, nor will they ever be bred. Polly and Curb are currently under a year so they do not have health clearances. Just because a dog lives at my home does not mean that they are available for breeding. BE VERY CAREFUL about the statements that you make regarding a breeding.

I find this honestly quite irritating. The dogs who are actively being bred have ALL required and optional health clearances. We currently have 7 dogs, of those dogs I have one girl who is being bred and she has ALL health clearances. I have 2 up and coming puppies who are turning a year old next week and they have appointments to start getting their health clearances. Emmett, Rhys and Kenna will never be bred and as such do not have all their health clearances.

Keyboard warriors.....
