giving pills

how do you guys give your dogs pills? I keep trying to give rusty his pills and he wont eat them. the first day or two it was easy, he thought they were a treat,lol. but now he wont take them. i tried hiding it in his food, and he picks it out, i tried crushing it and putting it in his water, and he wouldnt drink, next i tried crushing it and putting it in his food so he can pick it out, but now he wont eat what do i have to do?

Maybe hide it in a spoonfull of peanut butter? It used to work with my little brother when he was being stubborn about taking a pill...

Peanut butter is your friend! Crunchy works really well if Rusty is adept at picking out the pills.

I had two methods to give my old golden retreiver her arthritis pills:

1. The peanut butter and pill sandwich. A cracker smeared with peanut butter, pill in the middle, then topped with another cracker.

2. Pill-in-the-blanket. Take a piece of hot dog, preferably from the end. Insert pill in the middle.

Velveeta cheese or hot dogs. Both seem to work well with my group.

ah ha, peanut butter, i forgot he does have a weak spot for good ole PB, lol thanks for everyones help, i'll see if that works tonight!

IMPORTANT!!

Do not put the pill in the first treat.

Feed plain treat first, maybe 2 if he's suspicious.

WHen he's GULPING the treats, feed the one with the pill in it, and follow up with one with no pill.



I have GREAT luck with that soft liver sausage called BRAUNSCHWAIGER.

My dog gulps bite size treats so I buy some beef and stuff the pill into the center then freeze them. he swallows by the time he can get to the center.
Works like a charm.

My mom gives our dogs pills, not me, but her way always works. You'd have to do this method if your dog isn't eating. What you do is basically open the dog's mouth, take the pill, put your hand (with the pill of course) down the dog's throat, and drop the pill in. This isn't a very fun way of doing it, but it's pretty much the only way if for some reason your dog isn't eating anything.

As someone else suggested chesee is great for giving pills

Just put a pill between two pieces of cheese and let the dog eat it

3. Close and hold the dogs mouth for 1 minute
4. Dog will always swallow it

i always used a slice of cheese and wrapped the pill for my old dog. yoshi just eats it like a treat so she's not to hard

I give Foxy his heartworm pill in a piece of american cheese. Our husky got so many pills a day when we had her and she outright refused to eat them. I tried shoving them in her mouth and holding her mouth shut and patting her throat until she swallowed and she somehow would manage to work to pill out the side of her mouth with her tongue. We had a horrible time getting her to take her pills everyday.

penut butter worked GREAT i assumed he would pick out the pills like he has been doing, so i crushed them, and stirred them into a few spoon fulls of penut butter. gave him about half a spoon of normal PB, and he ate the "laced" PB and didnt know what was happening, thanks for the help!

yep been doing it this way for YEARS although it helps to gently massage their throat and as soon as they lick their nose pill is swallowed ( a vet showed me this)

I just got Madeline spayed yesterday, I tryed to give her the pain pill last night with peanut butter, but it was abit of a sticky mess. So I was on another forum and someone had the great idea of putting the pill inside a marshmellow, well Madeline loves marshmellows as whenever I make my Ovalteen at night I always give her a couple. It worked wonderfully, it went straight down, so at least I know she swallowed it.

My lab takes pills twice a day. In the morning, I open the capsules onto her food, add a few things to disguise the taste, add water and make it into a soup, and she eats it. I do the same in the evening.

Not truel!! My lab HATES swallowing pills. I can stuff a pill into her mouth and hold it closed, waiting for her to swallow, she'll pretend to swallow, and when I let go she spits it in my face.

For all my dogs but my beagle I put it into a piece of string cheese and they woof it down. I cut one piece into five little pieces and it just sucks the pill in. My beagel will eat the cheese and spit out the pill no matter what you give it in so if I cna't crush it then I have to do the head back and massage the throat thing that makes her hate me

if you have to force the pill when they won't just eat it or take it in a treat or piece of food you place it on the back of their tounge with your finger once you are at the back of the throat, hold the snout closed, blow into their nostrils and massage the throat, the blowing illicits a response for them to swallow.
