The work GSDs do is good, I'm just worried about how the breed may suffer because of it.

Overall it is bad but it does make it easier to find a good breeder. There are some really good Lab breeders out there. It takes a little work to find them but there out there. There are other breeds where finding a good breeder is near impossible and when you do they are 2000 miles away.
For GSDs there are a lot of quality breeders if you are willing to go to working lines, you just to have to do some research.

there are a few good working breeders around. I've never had any trouble finding a good dog. The only issue I have, is when they get popular because people see the well bred working dogs, doing amazing things, the unethical **** breeders multiply. and lots of breeders pop up that talk the talk, and produce lots of puppies, but don't have a clue. So while their popularity has increased, IMO, the number of good breeders or places i'd look to get a dog hasn't really, just more **** has been added.
Compare the number of good breeders of GSD and Labradors to the number of good American Bulldogs or Boxers or Presa Canarios.
Maybe the percentage of good breeders goes down but the total number goes up with increased demand for quality dogs from educated customers.
Don't get me wrong, as I believe that one of the worst things that can happen to a breed of dog is popularity.

Reallyyy? I see 100x more Yorkies, Goldens and Beagles than German Shepherds... where are they all hiding?! 
It's troubling when any demanding, intense working breed is in the top 10. It just doesn't make sense - being that the average person does NOT have time to meet the needs of a German Shepherd, and they are NOT intended to be a friendly love-everyone dog.

German Shepherds are Great
I am not suprized about the number (2) position, they are truly amazing dogs. They are beautiful, intelligent, and loyal. I too, am worried of the implications resulting from over breeding. Over breeding is not a good thing for any breed, but this is one breed that you don't want coming out wrong.
