General size categories question

So Crowley the mystery breed seems to be all done growing. He is approx. 7 months and hasn't changed height/weight in over 2 months.

He weighs 25 lbs and you can feel rib outline with hands on him so not over/under weight, though I would consider him 'heavy' or 'thick' boned.

He is 16 inches tall (at the shoulders)

My husband and I are having a disagreement on Crowley being a "small dog" or "medium dog" so I leave it to you to specify categories if you will please
I'll tell you my opinion (if I consider Crowley small/medium) after you guys prove me right! hahaha (I hope!)

Tiny dog range = less than ~10 lbs

Small dog range = 10-24 lbs

Medium dog range = 25-50 lbs

Large dog range = 51-100 lbs

Extra large/Giant dog range = anything 100+

It's not as simple as height/weight for me so I can't fill out the chart. It's a combination of height/weight and there's also some personality stuff involved. A dog who might be physically on the small side but has a large personality is bigger. A dog who is bigger but has a smaller personality gets dumped into a smaller category. I know a border collie who is average size but her personality is very "petite" for lack of a better description so in my mind she's a smaller dog than she is physically.

16" and 25 pounds sounds medium-ish.

Cynder is around 16" (???) and is 30 pounds. I consider her medium sized.

These are rough because build and personality are factors as well but

Tiny dog range = under 10 lbs

Small dog range = up to about 30lbs

Medium dog range = 30-75lbs

Large dog range =75lbs - 120lbs

Extra large/Giant dog range = 120lbs and up

My chihuahuas are very much in the tiny category, and 35lb Rory is a medium dog imo

If I'm going by weight, this. I generally go by height/weight combo, but I can't really... categorize them because I can't picture heights. :lol-sign:

Anyway, I'd put Crowley solidly into the Small size.

Hmmm, it really depends on the individual dog, the mass of it, not just the height and weight. For instance, Wesley is 50 lbs but definitely a large dog, he's just a poodle and light for a male. Feist is 17" tall and roughly 22-25lbs, no way would I consider her a small dog, definitely medium to me.

In this case, I'll go with dog in question being medium.

As others have said, I find it's more than just a matter of weight. Height and build also play a factor for me.
A dog can be of short build, but weigh 25+lbs, adversely, a dog could be of a tall build, but only weigh 25lbs.

Ruby is 16.5" tall and about 24lbs. To me, she's more of a medium sized dog because of her height, but a small because of her weight.

Rigby is 18" and 28lbs, again I'd like to say she's a medium sized dog, but she's still under the 30lbs mark most of the time.

But then there's breeds like the Basset Hound. Most of them can fall well under the 15" mark, yet weigh upwards 40+lbs. Which just throws the whole thing to hell.

I mean I consider Webby to be a medium-size dog at 22lbs. He just seems bigger.

I agree that height also plays a part of it. Those long low dogs I tend to put in a smaller category even though they can weigh more.

I don't tend to think of my dogs as tiny, but Quest is about 10 pounds. Dekka when fit is about 12. I would have called them average small dogs. But they have leg. A fat chi would be shorter but could weigh the same as Quest.

Haha, I don't know. Actually I tend to think of 18+ " as 'big' but my sense of size is warped. When we had papillons and shelties the shelties were the 'big dogs' at a whopping 18 lbs...

All things are relative but I'd probably go along with this. ^

My smallest Poodle at a year of age is 3lbs, 14 oz, about 9" tall. My larger one towered over my smallest Chihuahua but weighed less. Chihuahuas are more dense. He's just under 5 lbs and about 10" tall. (more including his hair, lol) A Doberman is considered a medium sized dog, but mine was 90 LBS and 29" inches at the withers. Compared to the toy breeds he's huge. Compared to a Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound, he was a pip squeak.

Would love to see a picture when your camera is back in business. So, since I haven't been around much, I see this is a new dog. I missed a lot of news from here lately. How exciting. Did you get him from a rescue or what? And you don't know what breed or breeds he is? Can't wait for pics.

I usually go by...

Tiny: 9lbs and under

Small: 10-24lbs

Medium: 25-49lbs

Large: 50-99lbs

X-Large/Giant: 100lbs+

For me, it's mostly weight, but height can be taken into consideration too. For example, I would probably put a 20lb Whippet in the "medium" category.

I consider Missy (75lbs) solidly in the "large" category. Jack and Heidi (25lbs) waffle between "small" and "medium".
