GED? help!!

Ok, this is my problem... I am extremely behind in school. When I moved from a different state I lost all my credits and I had to start all over again. I was supposed to graduate in 2004, but now I cant graduate until 2007!! Well, I am contemplating just dropping out or getting my GED. I do not live with my parents, so I have to get a full time job to make ends meet. With a full time job there is no way I can go to school full time. People are telling me that a GED is no different than a diploma. Is that true? Should I just get my GED or try to get a diploma? I am very confused!
 
i know pretty much nothing about this, lol...but i would think A LOT would have to do with what you want to end up doing...if you are gonna go to college...then call the one's you would consider going to, and ask them...

You may also want to go to a high school counselor? They may be biased though...thats about all i can say...

anyways, congrats to you for wanting to finish up though!

I will either be going to the police academy or a massage therapy school. Thanks for your suggestion; I never even thought about asking the school.

lol, yeah, it seems so obvious to do that now doesnt it!!

I'm also having issues with course requirements for PT school...they just arent clear...and my advisor told me to call...i was like "whoa, never thought of that!!" They were REALLY helpful when i called...i was really scared to call, so yeah...good luck!
 
I don't understand how you could possibly lose so many credits just because you moved to another state....this is high school, right??????? I'd advise on the diploma if at all possible over the GED.
 
I agree with Debi. I can't imagine why you'd lose so many credits. Is it possible to do some summer school to make up the difference?
 
Had you gone to a private school before moving? We have private schools around here that are not accredited schools. If a kid starts in one but by their junior year starts at a public school then their credits wouldnt transfer. That should be the only way you could have lost all your credits by starting a new school.

When I was in highschool we moved to another state. Discovered the new school was more advanced than where I had been going, plus there was the constitution that had to be taken and passed in order to graduate, it was totally different. I was going to come up short credits the end of my senior year.

I hated the school, was a miserable teenager. I was working afterschool and decided I'd rather work full time. So I decided to quit school. Then a few years later I wanted to go to college, so I took my GED. Mainly what matters is the college degree. Most of the time a GED is as good as a highschool degree. When my son-in-law was job hunting he had information from like a phone company. I noticed they will not hire anyone who quit school or has a GED. So I know depending on the place, the GED can hurt you. Most places accept a GED. Finishing school is always the best thing to do, if you are that far behind a GED might be your best solution.
 
Now I'm conused! You've said many times you were already in law enforcement classes at a technical school. How can you be in college classes without having certain credits already or been finished with high school completely?

Get your diploma,knowing people that hire a GED looks nowere as good.
 
You might want to check with a Police Academy .. A GED will probably be accepted by a Therapy School. I agree on the trasfers...these shouldn't be " lost " . You really should get a Diploma though.

Uhhhh... I would check into the validity of this. Sounds to me like somebody lied to you or something.

Sure you can, I did it. I worked full time and took 15-18 credits a semester in college. You just cannot party that much, but you can do it. If you do it in this manner and not having somebody else pay for it, will make that degree mean that much more to you.

No, it is not true. It depends on the career you want to get into. Some people see a GED as a equal thing with a diploma. Others see it as a sign of a person not able to complete anything.
 
I wouldn't trust that info on lost credits either. When we moved from North Carolina to Tennessee, not only did my credits transfer, I had enough to let me go ahead and pay $4.50 and get a diploma from the high school here. At the end of my junior year in NC I only needed a half credit to graduate, but I had 5 1/2 more credit hours than were required for graduation here. They didn't like it, but there wasn't any way to block me from going ahead and graduating.

If there's a 2 year college nearby that would probably be a good place to go for some guidance on the subject. You might be better off with a GED and a two year degree than spending the next two or three years working on a high school diploma.

yeah, lol, like everyone else mentioned...i dont even know why i didnt think of that...guess i was thinking bout college credits...that def doesnt make sense...i know ppl who transferred to my high school senior year, and they graduated with us...and my HS was considered to be 'one of the best public schools'

sorry, i just had to comment on this.,..and no, i am not looking to start an argument....but WHAT!??????????????? How on EARTH can you do that?? I work 12 hours a week and it is killing me...granted i suck at time management, but still...i actually have heard that you arent allowed at some jobs to work 40 hrs and be a full time student....
 
hmmm....massage therapy, maybe w/a GED. Police academy? Very unlikely. Even w/a 2 year criminal justice degree, they will still see that GED on your records, and it's not a positive thing. You should really see what you can do to get your diploma. Is there an alternative high school near you? I knew some people who took this route-it allowed them to get their credits more quickly than regular high school, yet they still got a diploma......
 
I thought you were going to be home full time, which is why you wanted another puppy? When did you suddenly realize you had to have a full time job?

And a GED, while better than nothing, is still not as good as an acutal high school diploma. The best you can hope for with a GED is to score in the top 5%, which at least makes it look like you were really serious about the GED. My good friend in high school did this and is now working towards being an RN.

Dreeza, you can work full-time and take a full work load, but it SUCKS. My roommate my senior year of college did this and he was a b*tch to be around. But he was also able to afford to not only pay for his school all by himself, but got some scholarships, bought a more reliable car, has the biggest CD collection of anyone I knew...just no social life. :)
 
actually, zoom, yeah, i was thinking more about that after i posted...

and now, i dont know how to say this without coming off wrong...but ill try...and please please, no one get offended...

this weekend, my roomie's friends came up from a school by us, which has a good rep, but is def a party school...now i do go to one of the 'top' public schools....and i guess i just never realized the difference...they were just talking about how they got trashed the night before their final....one of them MISSED their final, cause they didnt know it was that day....they slack off, dont go to class...and they each failed a class.....but they both have A's in other classes...and did NOTHING for them...

here, that is like UNHEARD of...yeah, people party...a LOT here...but people are Sooooooo serious about school too....i mean, usually on weekends, i hear all these parties going on, and drunkards walking around outside, but this weekend, and last weekend it was much much quieter....if you go to the library on a friday night...it is unnaturally full, lol...anyways, there is a huge difference between schools, and i guess i just didnt think about that....

once again, im not trying to make blanket statements or sound like a huge snob...so sorry if i do!!


zoom, that is so awesome that your friend could do that...dam...he gets a HUGE pat on the back for that!!! hehe, i dont have to pay for undergrad (as long as i have a job...if i dont have a job, i have to pay...) ... thats cause all the bday money, bat mitzvah money, xmas money, etc, was ALWAYS taken away from me and put into my college account, and then in stocks, and things like that... i have to pay for grad school though...that is gonna be interesting, LOL!

It is easy, as long as you skip the parties and other associated crap. See, I was a 22 year old freshman because I was in the Army first. I was over that "first time on my own" crap. I was serious about it and just laughed at all the kids failing and looking to blame or cheat. Idiots.

Even better... I took as many credits as I could take over each summer session too. I graduated in 3.5 years.

Also, for the record... The job was bartending at a really cool club. So most of my work time was Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. That helped.

lol, just read my post above...

i rarely party...and im gonna have to start getting more extracurriculars if i wanna get into PT school...anyways, wasnt trying to argue, im just dumb and forgot that it is different for everyone...

It depends on where you are. We've got state troopers here with felony criminal records . . . :rolleyes:
