Just an idea -

Unfortunately, I'm no longer working with a rescue group - but I know some of you are. Maybe, if any of your are volunteering, you'd be able to arrange for a rescue to pull the dog (just to make getting it out easier - as rescues wont have to go through the whole procedure) as long as they know that the dog has a foster home and adopter in line. That way they wouldn't feel as if they're taking on a dog that will stay with them for months and not have a foster.

Just a thought... not sure if you've tried.

I did leave a message with the shelter. I will call them tommorow. I think they are closed today. Maybe if I fax all the paper work up they need (copy of lease and so forth) and offer to pay the adoption fees in advance they would be willing to hold her so I can come get her?

I also am still waiting on responses from other rescue groups to see if they can do anything to help.

Trying was not enough. There was more. If we left earlier...if we drove more carefully..there are a thousand things we could have done.

I don't know what else to do I am trying everything I can think of. I feel horrible and have been crying over this all night. If she gets put down it will my fault and I wont ever forgive myself.

Let me make this clear. It is NOT your fault. You did your best, and something went wrong. That is life. If she is put down, it is the fault of her original owner, for dumping her at a high kill shelter. It is the fault of the shelter for not giving a gorgeous dog a chance, and for having rules that make it dang HARD to get her out of there. It is the fault of the shelter for not adopting a no-kill plan. It is the fault of her breeder for not keeping track of her. It is the fault, if you want to get broad, of society for creating and nuturing a model where the lives of companion animals are disposable, and of the ARistas for actively encouraging that model instead of actually fighting for the animals themselves. It is not YOUR fault.

Indeed, you were doing this out of the goodness of your heart. You've never seen that dog. You did not breed her, own her, she was never in your possession. She is only your responsibility, because you have mentally assumed that responsibility, because you are a good person who wants to help. There are people who owe her a great deal more than you, or anyone on Chaz, and they failed her. If she is put down, it is THEIR fault, not yours. YOU have done nothing wrong. YOU have done the best you could by her. YOU are still trying to do the best you can by her. That's a heck of a lot more than those who actually have a duty to her. So don't DARE blame yourself.

Update. I called the shelter back. The adoption line was not open and there is noone there BUT I was able to get a live person on another extension (pressing random buttons till I got someone). I explained the situation and what happened. Told them I was willing to pay in advance the adoption fee to let them know I was serious about adopting Lizzy but I need them to hold her until this weekend so I can come get her.

The woman I spoke to told me she was not sure if that would be allowed but it does not hurt to call tomorrow when they are open and make the offer. The worse they can say is thats not allowed.

Bunny, don't beat yourself up. You have no control over a tire. You not alone in this, and it's not fair for you to have all the stress placed on your shoulders. We all need to work together, to save her, that is the main goal.

I put a call into Filla rescue here in Texas to see if they can help. I really would love to have her, but right now, I need to know she will be safe.

I know you have a lot of your shoulders right now so you can lean on mine and we can have a long happy cry when we know she is ok.(((hugs)))

I've also put the word out to the rescue group I help out with to see if anyone with a shelter-pull license is in that area and can help out! I know it's getting tougher around my area to pull dogs unless you are a "licensed rescuer".

ok update!!! Good News... just hung up with Ann Scott from fila rescue in Pennslyvania. She is going to try to get Lizzy out for us. She is also going to contact a mastiff rescue person somewhere in the area.

Problem-She cannot get in touch with anyone at the shelter today. She did leave her phone number, etc. If she can spring her, she will have to take the dog to someone quickly, she does not have anywhere to keep her at present and only has a small car.

Thank god you got in touch with someone! :)

I can go and pick her up but only on the weekends.

I am not sure if Anne needs to pull Lizzy herself or not but if someone could pull for them I could do that and save Anne the trip down this way if she would like.

Nolu, If Anne needs to pull herself and needs to do so before the weekend can Lizzy stay with you until saturday and then I can meet you and do the next leg of transport?

Of COURSE I can! No problem. I even have a collar that will fit her, LOL. It was going to go to FOHA but if she doesn't have something nice it'll certainly do.

Do we need anything else. Giant car harness? Leash? Training collar. Just tell me and I can pick it up and meet you somewhere.
