I went to the wet in August for my dog's routine checkup. I told her that my dog was getting picky about his food and asked for any suggestions about what I could do or add to it to make it more palatable for him. She suggest that I use a little bit of low sodium chicken broth and so I've been doing that for 3 months now.

It never occurred to me that there's onions in chicken broth and I just figured it out tonight. I'm worried because I've been giving it to him for 3 months now and I've heard that onion poisoning can be an issue in terms of it adding up? As in, it can accumulate over time.

How worried should I be about this? If I stop now, will that be enough since he's been getting it two times a day for 3 months? =/

...not all chicken broth has onion. In fact, I just went to check the two different types of chicken broth I have in the cupboard and neither has onion in it. I would look to find one that doesn't for your dog. Or better yet, make one from scratch and don't add anything other than chicken!

In the meantime, it's such a small amount I doubt you've caused any long term issues, but if you're worried you might want to call your vet just to be reassured.

Hmm, it seems I just was unlucky with the one that I chose. I've been using the same one the whole time so it's had onion in the the whole time =/ I'm definitely going to call the vet tomorrow but I just wondered if anyone had any information on here. Thanks for your help!

I honestly would not be worried at all, personally. Usually dogs have to eat alot of onions to see a problem. The main problem is anemia, so if you are super freaked out and want to be 100% sure then have your vet run a RBC count.

Naw just poke him in the gums. If the pink color returns in less than a second he's likely fine. Edit: Oh wait that's hydration lol. Gums should be pink, not pale for anemia.

Problem with onions is kidney failure, I believe, but it's raw onions that you have to worry about IIRC. Cooked is fine.
