As some of you have probably noticed, I'm doing a bit of research into getting my next dog... who will either be a Toller or an Aussie, although leaning more towards an Aussie again after a conversation with Toller_08 and realizing they might indeed be the better fit. :)

But anyways, I would likely be going with a breeder in Ontario and at this point, I will likely end up in Winnipeg if all the stars align with grad school. So this means I'll either be flying the puppy to me, or I will go pick it up if I am able to. I'm really hoping I'll be able to drive out and pick up the puppy myself (it'll be around a 23 hour drive) but flying the puppy out by plane is my "worst case" scenario.

I couldn't find any exact prices in my Google search, so I was wondering if anyone has an experience or experiences that you would be willing to share with the process... as well as a price range I could expect, if you're willing to since I understand that might be something people would prefer to keep to themselves. I'm just trying to get an idea of my basic expenses such as the dog and transportation, because ideally, I'll have the money saved up well in advance.

I got my Bouvier from Ontario, and I live in Saskatchewan. He flew with Westjet. My breeder's husband worked at airports, and strongly recommended using Westjet. They are put in the live animal hold at the front of the plane - climate controlled, etc. He was a baby puppy, but didn't seem traumatized when I picked him up at the airport. I honestly can't remember the cost, but think it was a couple hundred bucks. Your breeder will need to do some work on their end too - airline approved kennel, zip tied shut, absorbent padding taped down to the bottom of the crate, etc.

I'll have to keep it in mind to use WestJet then! I'm thinking the flight out will be more stressful on me than the puppy since I'm such a chronic worrier.

I think the breeder has a fair bit of experience with flying puppies out so I'll have to mention that to them when the time comes to actually email. Right now I'm just covering all my bases so that in a couple years, I won't have near as many questions to be asking. :)
