Seamus. :rofl1:

I know, I know, he's not a breed. But I never really liked small fuzzies and somehow ended up with one. He's great and I absolutely adore him, but I can't see myself owning one like him again. :p

The dog I had before Nola was a lab. Never. Ever. Again. :p My personality does NOT work with a lab's. I can't see myself owning any retrievers again, actually, unless it's a "harder" one like a GSP.

I grew up with schnauzers and my parents had 4 over the course of 30 or so years (none now since the last one passed). I loved them dearly and they were great dogs in many ways, but terriers just aren't for me. I really didn't like the reactivity, barkiness, and scrappiness. While the males were pretty velco (only with my mom) none of them were cuddly dogs either and preferred to sit nearby and watch you. They weren't nearly the most terrier-like terriers I've met, and were actually really easy to live with, but just not for me.

Well, I was never very fond of cattle dogs, and here I am with a cattle dog mix on my bed :p.

I lived with Benji, my mom's schnauzer mix, for six years and while I did love him and I was sad his life was cut short, I didn't LIKE him one bit. Terriers just aren't for me.

I think I'm going to add again, because life happens and I realized recently that I really like Dobermans (significant other has two!) and I was always sort of leery of them for some reason. Probably lack of exposure and breed type really... Dobes and Rotts were always just a breed I didn't really feel comfortable around because I didn't know well enough. But goodness his Dobes are such sweethearts. They're like a pit bull towards their owner, a GSD towards everyone else, with a short coat (which I LOVE in dogs, I've come to find out). If you had asked me two months ago if I would ever own a Dobe I would have said no way. But now, I could seriously see myself owning one. I think I kind of had an "aha!" moment?

We had 2 field-bred Labs. One was a great duck dog, while the other was ornery and stubborn and way too excitable. She preferred taking off in the woods after anything and everything. And I'll be the first to admit that they were super-friendly dogs and very sweet. But I just don't like Labradors. They're everywhere down here, from true bird dogs to pointy-nosed byb specials to show-bred tanks. Some are way too friendly, and an alarmingly increasing number are unstable and deserve nothing short of a bullet and burial. But no matter the type or temperament, I just cannot bring myself to like them. They're just...annoying. So no more Labs or Lab mixes for us. Ever.

I wil say that I had a Lab/Rottweiler cross that I found on our property after he'd been bitten by a Cottonmouth (he'd managed to kill it, too). He was about 8-10 months old, and already 70 lbs. I really loved that dog, but I believe it's more because he had the personality traits of a Rottie. Sadly, I had to put him down at 6 after he lost his battle to a vicious type of lymphoma. My first dog with cancer...and sadly not my last. :(

I had these moments with Dobes and Rotties!

I had never even met a Dobe until last year I got to spend a few nights at a friends sisters house with her 2, and wow... I fell in love. They were fairly low maintenance, but very attached to us people too and loved to lean into me. But overall I loved the vibe I got from them and fell in love. I could totally live with one. Health problems scare me though.

I’ve never been much of a fan of boxers, not in to brachiocephalic anything, and their OTT personality and obnoxiousness with other dogs is just plain annoying to me. Not a huge fan of labs either, just an overexposure thing, they’re everywhere around here.
Now I have a Bates who is likely mostly boxer with a little lab thrown in. (Some people swear he’s part dane, but I’m not convinced.)
And yep, the only thing Bates is not is brachiocephalic. He has an annoying, OTT personality, he’s totally obnoxious with other dogs, he’s pushy, demanding, in-your-face, generally a giant PITA.
But I adore him :D

I had a pug for 6 months. This pretty much sums it up:

Bogart and I aren't always on the same plane, but we totally are here.

I spent a year finding a good match because my SO had wanted a pug all her life. For a pug, he was a good match. (She moved out six months later and still has him btw)

I meet soooo many Border Collies who just annoy the hell out of me. Complete spazzes who care more about a ball than anything on the planet, including their owner. So many who are skittish, overtly submissive and who take cheap shots on other dogs and people. I think that's because 99% of people are completely inappropriate for this breed, yet it's soaring in popularity because they are the "smartest dogs evar OMGAH!"

But I love Gonzo, including all of his quirks. He'd be much better suited to be a rancher's dog who never leaves his side and does anything he asks of him. But he has changed and so have I, for the better, to fit into each other's lives for the past 13 years. I love that he is a confident, noble dog; even if he's also a huge snob. Even if it made him friendlier, I wouldn't want him to be a submissive mush.

I used to think Corgis looked weird. The more I met, the more they grew on me, and became the cutest creatures on the planet to me! I swear a Corgi can do no wrong.

Yeah. Border Collies.

Don't misunderstand - I adore Finn, he is my best buddy, my heart and my co-pilot. But like... all of the BCs I met were the products of lifetimes of herding/sport work, and that was never a life I really wanted, but I went ahead anyway.

Finn is happy, healthy and content with me, but I'm sure he would have COMPLETELY thrived in a sport/work home. With me, he's had to deal with a myriad of situations unsuited for a BC that have made him develop some weirdo quirks that I can't really get rid of. Had I done it all over again and thought a little more logically, it wouldn't have been a Border Collie for me. In the future, I'll likely stick closer to energetic but more mentally mellowed dogs.

I guess it's not so much that I own a breed I dislike - I still adore Border Collies. But I've learned they're not for me as a whole.

Finn is, though. <3

Before Sally I thought that pit bills were vicious, nasty dogs and were only owned by idiots who wanted a "tough" dog. Sally came into my life and totally changed my perspective on the breed as well as dogs in general. Not sure that I would get another (at least a young one) due to the dog aggression issues. Sally gets along beautifully with Jack but I know that could easily not be the case and our house really isn't set up for crate and rotate.

Before Jack, I'd never really disliked labs, but never found them all that exciting. When we were looking for a second dog, I wanted a dog friendly, large, athletic breed since Sally was energetic, dog selective, and didn't seem to have good "doggy language" skills. Now I love the breed! There are a few quirks Jack has that I could do without, but I think a lot of that has to do with training mistakes/laziness on my part.

I've never seen Jack as an OMGILOVEEVRYONEALLTHETIME dog. He is an attention ***** for sure, and enjoys pets from lots of people, but it's never really much beyond a greeting unless the person has spent some time with him. He definately has his favorite people-his top three are me, my friend Ann, and DH, in that order. I've been around goldens that I'm pretty sure would have been happy to go home with me after a couple of pets and never look back but I've never really gotten that feeling with Jack or most other labs.

Five years ago I would have told you you where nuts if you thought I would ever own a small dog, and a terrier HELL no! I have since seen the light and realized how flipping fantastic little dogs can be if you get the right match and socialize and train them properly. Radar is my sidekick, he will go longer and faster than my big guys when hiking, he is down for anything and portable enough to take everywhere with me, which he is more than happy to do. I still love big dogs but there will be many more small terriers in my future.

Now as for breeds I will never have again, my sisters pointer lives with me and I am thankful everyday that I won't have to live with him forever. Great dog in many ways but not at all for me. I grew up with bc's and somedays I conscider another one, but our last one sort of turned me off of them.

I never particularly liked Golden Retrievers and after having one for about a month till I could give him back to my niece, I would never have another one. Just don't like their love everyone nature and he was wild, never having had any training and 8 months old. (not his fault).

It also would have meant (if I did have to keep him) that I would not have been able to get Kris, my Doberman, which I had been looking a long time for.

I have always liked breeds that were more of a one man (one family) dog. My Shih Tzu x Maltese are friendly but don't think everyone is their long lost friend.

Used to babysit my sister's husky when she was at work. That dog made me cringe, to say the least. Had an over-the-top prey drive and the shedding was insane.
