Should be, Civil laws should allow you to at least sue to recover the value of the animals killed (make sure to take lots of pictures). Also the dogs could be determined as dangerous animals (Wording varies from place to place). The is also has to be a host of leash laws and animal control laws that are broken.

Call animal control and the police and tell the owners you won't sue for previous incidents' costs if they contain their dogs. If it continues, and AC and the cops can't/won't help, call a lawyer. The dangerous dog laws are largely useless, but the same thing that renders them so ineffective - American veneration of private property - should help you in a legal suit against these people for destruction of your property. Some people can only be influenced by direct harassment - if this is the case, don't worry about being 'one of those idiots who sues everyone.' Some lawsuits are quite justified.

Unfortunately, that is the risk you run when you keep cats outdoors. When I was younger and still living at home on the "farm" we kept 3 cats outdoors as barn cats. We didn't too many problems with them getting killed, but they often came back to be fed in the morning looking pretty banged up, from other animals - foxes, dogs, and other cats.

Depending on what kind of area you live in, you may have to bring your cats indoors to keep them alive. Especially if your town does have laws that state cats cannot be kept outside. I know the town i currently live in does have that rule.... people still allow their cats outside, or try to keep them outside, but if they are caught then they are fined.

That's awful. I am sorry about your losses. Where did you find your cats bodies? Were you able to get any photos of the offenders? How did the offending animals get into your yard?

When we first bought our noew home, the fence line was unfinished. We used 'zip' leads that allow the dogs a little freedom without leaving the yard. We had to put up with other animals taunting the dogs in our yard. A pack of 3 Miniature Pinchers liked to come over nip at them and run. Eventually we finished off the fence. The pinschers still came to taunt them at the fence. Ice and Rufus of course would want to get out badly and chase them. Once Rufus even made it under the fence. (no harm done, but a pain in the butt to chase him and get him home) Finally, we put in a Fido-Shock along the inside of the fence. This deters our dogs from approaching the fence line. And now they aren't very interested in the Pinschers. The just look at them when they come around and then go back to playing with their sticks and bones.

The point of my story is that we had to come up with solutions to the problem. The owners of the free range dogs continue to be irresponsible and make excuses why their dogs are always out running around. Even reporting the situation to AC hasn't seemed to do much. Try to think of what you can do to protect your Kitties. Can you give them a safe have to run to when other animals come to the yard? A Kitty house?

My best friends Dad, when I was a kid, up in the rolling hills of New England would have said:

"The three Ss, Shoot, Shovel, And Shut-up."

Now I personaly wouldn't be able to do something like that....but then again if some dog was eating my babies...I am not sure what I would be capable of. But thats how it was up there in the country. He didn't take kindly to stray animals terrorizing his animals on his property.

Are these dogs loose are just passing by on walks? I posted about just the other day how I was jogging with OC on the flexi leash and he stopped to sniff a bush which I thought nothing of because he always stops, sniffs, marks, then keeps running before the end of the leash is reached. Suddenly a HUGE tom cat came screaming out and swatted at OC''s face. He backed up in shock then realizing what it was went into hunting mode and had I not been able to react as quick as he did we would''ve had a dead cat on our hands. I don''t know where the cat is from as there was no ID on it. There were a couple other cats I spotted in the same yard. I would''ve been responsible because technically OC was trespassing on to the yard (the bush was right beside the sidewalk) but this wouldn''t happen had the cats been properly contained.

I came across that story too and, horrible as it is, it made me feel better to find someone else suffering from frustrated anxiety over vicious dogs and indifferent officials. I still can't understand why cops don't take dogs behaving aggressively (especially in packs) more seriously - it's a public health issue, isn't it? It's always handed over to AC like it's beneath the police. Meanwhile, AC seems to think it's only job responsibility is collecting license fees. And then every time someone's pet monster kills someone, the reporters can't find a single official who knew anything about the problem, or a neighbor who wasn't living in fear of the creature.
