is it just me, or does this seem to happen an awful lot?

i'm never sending my dog anywhere on an airplane.

I have shipped dogs, both as checked baggage and as cargo.

I always put a sign in bright colored paper on top of the crate stating the dog's name, that "I might be scared", and to please keep the crate out of direct sunlight, not put it on any conveyors, and NOT TO OPEN THE DOOR.

I also band my crates like a wrapped present, with one band securing it lengthwise, across the door, and another around its circumference.

If they want to open the door on one of my crates, it will take some work to do it.

I also NEVER ship a dog I have not insured for at least 10K. The insurance is not expensive, and I feel they treat "packages" with a hefty insurance price tag on them differently.

I know I would never in a million years put my dogs on a plane. When I evacuated for Katrina I was so scared having Brody in a strange town that we did not know. I was so scared his leash would break and he would take off I actually bought him a second collar and leash so I bet people thought I was crazy.:rofl1: The hotel we were at was on a really busy highway and it was a nightmare having to walk him behind the hotel everyday.

I am so glad those people found Bear!:) What a nightmare experience.

I had an airline approved crate some how 'pop' open at the Pearson International Airport. It was very scary. My dalmatian was running around scared out of her tree. It was a horrible experience.

i've only brought animals on a plane once... but they went into the cabin with me... the only problem with that is that they have to be small animals... but it was only a $50 fee to bring them with me...

I think I'd be too afraid to ship them as cargo... I can't imagine how scary that must be!

Wonderful happy ending. But I can not imagine why the worker would open the cage.
A few years back a champion whippet was lost after competing in Westminster. I do not think they ever found the dog.

Ya that dog apparently belonged to my sister's friend's family if I recall correctly... and I think you're right. That dog was never found.

I've also shipping to and from with no problems. Zip ties go a long way...as does insurance as noted. You don't hear story 1 about the hundreds of animals shipped safely in a day tho...less interesting news.

FAA has reports of every incident involving an animal publicly published and the OWNERS of the animals are just as guilty and stupid in majority of them...shipping DRUGGED animals, SICK animals, elderly or infant, animals...

Plenty of blame to go around.

~Mafia~

Smudge's crate came zip tied shut in two places. I had to ask for a knife so I could take him out to pee at the airport.

Glad he was safe, and agree with RR 100%.

I've heard just as many horror stories of owner negligence as I have with airport employees/conditions.... the new owners who get a dog and let it out not knowing how it will react or behave and "oops" dog slipped it's lead.
