Yes for both though it would depend on how much I didn't like the breeder/rescue and what the problems were. There are some ethical issues I will just not budge on anymore. Other things aren't that big of a deal to me/I'm flexible on. And some breeders are crazy. No desire to deal with that.
I'm more strict on breeders than rescues though to be honest would probably not really adopt from a rescue. Part of my requirements with Hank was that I didn't want a dog from a rescue that made me fill out a bunch of crap and do a million home checks. If I get another rescue, it'll be a private rehome or another animal control dog.

There were things I did not like about the breeder who bred and raised baby Payton.
But I did like the lines he came from (Auggie's breeder's lines) and ultimately I put more weight on the genetics involved than the other stuff.
There is no such thing as a perfect breeder IMO, it will always be about weighing the things you like against the things you don't like.

Breeder? Absolutely not. As Laur said, some breeders be crazy and in most cases, you will deal with them in the long-term for the dog's life at least to a certain extent especially if you need anything/there are problems. I WANT that breeder support and I want it from someone who isn't nuts.
I also don't purchase from breeders, regardless of what they are producing/if I like the dogs, if they do things I don't like even if those things aren't necessarily bad...I wouldn't purchase from a breeder who houses dogs in outdoor kennels for example, just not my style.
So it isn't about GOOD VS. BAD to me just... not like vs. like. No breeder is perfect, although Merlin's to ME is incredibly close.
Not only do the breeders I work with have to be responsible and fill all my criteria, they have to be NICE and communicative and available. So yea, high standards lol

so the line for "rescue I don't like" is really just
A) overly protective when it comes to adoption procedures (I think ONE home check is more than sufficient)
B) Hoarder type situations in foster homes which goes hand in hand with dishonesty on dogs true temperaments

I won't sign contracts with people I don't trust and feel at least neutral about, so that's my line in the sand.
If there are concerns that shift my feelings into the negative, make me feel smothered with rules, or that will impact said dog's final temperament and health, I will not sign on that line.

I voted on "it depends". Which would I regret more: passing up on the dog, or adopting from X place?
I wouldn't sign a contract I didn't agree with, period. But beyond that, for the perfect dog...I don't know if I'd really care where it came from, so long as that didn't effect its future with me. If that at all makes sense?

Maybe. It would depend on exactly what I don't like about them/their rules/their contract and how willing they would be to compromise about something I didn't care for (mainly thinking of restrictive rules in breeder contracts, here).
It's not like there aren't enough dogs in the world, and my tastes aren't specific enough to really limit me.

A rescue? It wouldn't stop me. Meg came from a rescue that I fully endorse and she proudly bears the rescue's name in her registered name. Gusto was basically a private rescue, but there's nowhere near the pride as to where he came from. But whatever. It was a place he passed through quickly. They didn't even make money off the deal. The only (too low) amount of money that changed hands was with his wonderful foster mother. I don't expect a rescue to be anything other than a place for me to get a dog.

If I'm going to pay $1k+ for a dog instead of $20, I'm going to hold every step of the process to a different standard.

When looking at ACDs I came across a breeder who had puppies (blue females) pretty readily available, health testing, her dogs had been or were being shown, some had titles. I got a weird vibe, and I liked her on Facebook and didn't like her drama...but I contacted her anyway to see if I might like her better one-on-one. I told myself I was buying the puppy not the breeder. I didn't like what she had to say and decided to pass.
She is the one that was recently arrested for the horrible conditions her dogs were kept in. The health testing was forged. Yes...forged. Dogs that were shown, were not shown by her...she purchased adult dogs from other breeders for the most part. Dogs that were some of her main breeding dogs (that she produced and then bred from) are barely handleable.
I know the people that got puppies from her love their dogs, but they don't feel good for supporting her. I wouldn't have either.

But she was from lines that I liked, it was the right time and the right puppy. I'm still very friendly with her (hoping to visit her soon) and she likes seeing our accomplishments..she's a good person.
