I have had my eye on kelpies for a little while now and last night I saw a kelpie mix on the beach. It was so much smarter than its owner that it made me want me one ever more. It was running circles around her (literally!). Then I came home and saw the picture of Mira and immdeiately Kelpies got thrown out the window and I had to resist calling my granny to see if she knew of any Flat coat breeders.

Add into that the fact that kelpies are pretty much unknown to me and my family thinks me completely crazy for wanting one and that we are very a much a retriever family and it's making Flat coats look pretty attractive right now.

I don't even know why I'm even looking at breeds now because (hopefully) I'll not be able to get another dog for 8+ years .
 
I want a dog that plays fetch or likes to play in general, willing and able to do agility & is friendly. That's all I want, yet I have 4 dogs that don't fit that.

I want to add a second dog when Jack and I move out in a year or so. No idea what I want breed wise. I change my mind all the time. I want a border collie but then my non-traditional breed agility friends would think I was trying to 'fit in' with the agility crowd, I want a lab but my Aunt owns/breeds them and I'd have to get one from her, and she'd most likely co-own and critique everything I do. My boyfriend wants a pug, but they don't fit what I want. I want an Aussie but I'm having a hard time finding a breeder that I like. I would love to have a Weim, Rottie, Chihuahua, Bernese Mt. Dog, Malinois, Ibizan hound, and more. My wants are all over the place.

Most likely I'll go to a shelter and have the right dog find me.
 
YES! For years and years... I never even really "decided" on Brittanys, I was just looking to adopt, liked the sound of Brits and put in an application to the Brittany rescue, which was the thing that ended up panning out. I had actually applied for a kelpie mix at an all-breed rescue first, but he had already been adopted.

Right now I'm really on spaniels... I'm seriously considering a:

Field spaniel
Am Cocker
WSS
ESS
English Cocker
Brittany
Whippet
Standard Poodle
Collie

So many choices!
 
I want more Dekkas, though I know that won't happen.

(small, scruffy, driven, water maniac, high drive for food, prey and toy...)

I will always have a JRT. Though I also reallly want a Basenji!!

But after a basenji my list is kind of vauge

frenchie (met some on the trip, I think they have beat out pugs)
toller (never met one yet with behaviour issues, and I have met a LOT. I know of one but haven't met her yet)

My first breed of choice was always a GSD. From the time I was 5 years old, I wanted a GSD soooooo badly. My first dog when I was 11 was a pound mixed breed. He was supposed to be a Beagle mix and my parents wanted me to get something smaller. I was thrilled when he grew up to be an 85lb Dobe type dog :) I joined 4H with him and was bitten by the dog training/showing bug, in bad way. One of the advisors was involved in Collies and there were a ton of Collies in our club. After a few years, I had to get a purebred dog so I could compete in AKC and I ended up with a Collie. A very cool, drivey and fun Collie who was the first dog I titled. I still badly wanted a GSD and when I was a Junior in high scool, I finally had an opportunity to get a really nice GSD puppy. And she was an awesome dog, really everything I could have hoped for. Had I been a better trainer or had more experience with foundation training for a very high drive dog when I got her, she could have been very competitive in agility. At this point, I really though that Collies and GSDs were to be "my breeds".

Something odd happened though. While I was still in 4H and waiting for my GSD puppy to be born, I told my advisor who bred Collies that I wanted to show a dog in conformation. But there was no way I could get another dog and get my GSD puppy (who I knew was not AKC conformation type). She said she'd co-own a dog with me and I could show in conformation. I thought this dog would be a Collies until...she brought me a Belgian! I knew she had Belgians as well and thought they were neat looking but I was very focused on Collies and GSDs.

Now my house is full of pointy faced Black Dogs! I am totally immersed in all things Belgian. I train and compete with Belgians, have Belgian friends, know Belgian pedigrees, breed Belgians, go to Belgian Nationals. Not having Belgians would seem weird at this point. There is one remaining old GSD but unlikely to be another for a long time. I only ever had the one Collie. We have one Cardigan Corgi, which is my husband's breed of choice but he's grown on me. And now I have a PyrShep - a breed that 10 years ago, I didn't even know about!

I have never been someone who is a one breed person. I'm pretty devoted to Belgians but will probably also have at least one non-Belgian. I like a lot of breeds and took several years to decide what my non-Belgian would be. Most of the breeds I liked and looked into were herding breeds, although I love sighthounds too. I kept going back to PyrSheps when trying to decide on a non-Belgian and so far, the PyrShep is awesome! Wild, super smart, bold and very drivey.

Maybe you just need a friend with PWDs? A good, long time friend of mine has PWDs, so I have gotten to sort of enjoy them through her's ;)
 
I definitely have the same problem. I love poodles, but I want something different and not curly coated. Right now I am really wanting a border terrier or Dagan

Maybe I will make a friendship application and hand it out at dog shows with "need only apply if you own PWDs or corgis" on it.

Also I got to play with one of my most favorite corgis in the world today, did not help my corgi want!!
 
My only problem when it comes to my next dog is coming up with reasons why I might not want another Toller. And to be honest, I really can't think of any reason why not to get another Toller... which is kind of sad in the respect that I do want to have a few other breeds at some point in my life, but at the same time, I don't feel the pull for any other breed like I do Tollers. So, my next dog will more than likely be another Toller. Aside from looking cute and cuddly (I do kind of like a more intimidating looking dog a lot of times, as there are lots of creepy people in the city who don't bat an eye at Dance), they are everything I like and more. And after seeing 50+ Tollers at the specialty today, all I can think about is how much I'd love to have another one right now if it were possible to keep my sanity, haha. I really just don't want four permanent dogs, but I do have to remind myself of that fact regularly.
 
I will probably always have a BC or BC mix in my life. I just love them!

I absolutely LOVE sighthounds too. I'm constantly jumping back and forth between multiple different types of sighthounds: Ibizan Hound, Pharaoh Hound, Greyhound, Borzoi, Silken Windhound, Magyar Agar, Saluki and Galgo Espanol are some of the ones I've grown super fond of.

That said... my next dog is going to be an Ibizan. I'm very set on this breed.

Interestingly, my friend got into them in the early 90s as a kid in 4H and has had them ever since. Her first one came from one of the first people to really become active in the breed in the US. She got him because the woman bred Sibes as well and her family had several Sibes from her. They were looking for a dog, the breeder had no Sibes but suggested a PWD puppy. Back then you never saw or heard of them any where, not really even at shows. Sort of a strange way to get involved with a rare breed LOL
 
I'm just going to look on petfinder and find a couple of 50-70 pound mutts (when grown, if they are pups) I was looking a few days ago, and there are quite a few littermates available. That would work out really well. I will go that way again, if possible. If not, I will find two that get along and go with them.
 
I will always have a boxer..or multiples!

But i bat around the idea of:

Boston Terrier
French Bulldog
English Bulldog

...are you seeing a theme here...No tails, short noses...lol

I think i would love a doberman one day, but for now, a smaller version of the boxer would be great, if Mac shows more interest in competing in the juniors ring. She already handles the boxers when i am training, so i see promise!

Very interesting to read everyones wants and wishes for future family members.
 
No matter how much I think about breeds or plan what I would like to have for my next dog, I always seem to end up with Some Mutt. A pattern that I'm sure will continue, and honestly I like it and am totally fine with it. I kinda like the crap shoot.
 
I never thought I would have hounds, ever, and now I know I will never be Plott-less again :) other breeds I have toyed with the idea of:

Kerry Blue
Saluki
Rhodesian
Afghan
Doberman
another Std Poodle
pit bull
Border collie

I think that about covers it. Oh, and when I am old, I will have Frenchies and Pekes :)
