I don't have a breed! Hoping Rat Terriers will be my breed fo-eva.

When we retire from funeral service (in 5, 10, 15 years) and start a new business venture, I'm going to have a pack of RTs and Koolies.

I love greyhounds for so many reasons, so I will likely always have 1. Maybe only greyhounds forever... I don't know. I think in my heart that's kind of what I want. On the other hand I have some major Koolie want when I see all the awesome dogs on here. I never thought I'd want a SMALLER dog, because I so love biiiiig dogs, but all these fun tricks make me kind of want smaller and more versatile. Plus it wouldn't be awful to have something more biddable sometimes....

Right now, I don't know.

I have always kind of thought I would only have border collies or mixes thereof because I mesh so well with them. But lately I have also been thinking about Spaniels. I could also see myself owning a Springer of some kind as my second dog (not for years).

I'll probably always own a border collie though. We just click.

I need to have at least 1 Koolie and 1 Silken in my life at all times xD For a while, I used to think that I'd just have multiples of Koolies and Silkens forever. I started spending a lot more time with my SO's lab-mix and I really enjoy him (he's just sssooo different from Lugia and Circus and has many different talents and is good at things that Lugia and Circus aren't).... so that got me thinking, I'd probably enjoy tons of other dog breeds too!

I've already decided that I never want kids of my own - this just means that I get to experience living with many different dog breeds throughout my life.

Some of the other dog breeds I'd like to try:
Magyar agar - I heard that they were more "dog-like" compared to other sighthounds, very attached and AFFECTIONATE to their families, wary of strangers. They do "doggy" things like fetch and swim.

Borzoi - I'd love a giant Lugia! This was my dream dog breed back when I was 12 years old with a ratty "Dogs of the World" book, I'd obsess over their painting of the Borzoi. The ones that I've met were real sweethearts and a couple tried to be lapdogs. In person, they just have an amazing presence. I'd be so honored if I lived with such a creature and got to be in his/her company on a daily basis.

Belgian Malinois - I want to get one just to train. This is my latest breed obsession. I'd like a dog with even more drive and intensity compared to Circus. I like that a lot of them are velcro dogs and follow their owners from room-to-room (Circus is a lot more independent than that). I'd like to get a Mal someday and teach her to do absolutely everything.

Border Collie - sometimes I think that I'd like to try a sport-bred BC someday, but if I were to get a small herder, I'd rather that space go to another Koolie.

Borderstaffy - never met one in person, but I've seen videos and they seem like SUCH fun dogs! I love how fast, little, drivey, and affectionate they are.

Ibizan Hound - again, if I had a spot for a medium-sized sighthound it would probably go to another Silken. But I'm interested in beezers because of their goofy klepto-like personalities, and they are amazing jumpers. If I ever got one, she'd have to be a prospect for dabbling in sport, I'd love to try my hand at teaching a beezer long-distance disc, I bet they'd make absolutely incredible leaps once they got into it!

Dalmatian/mix rescue - I met this Dalmatian-mix a while ago who was in rescue and she was just the sweetest thing ever. Even though I just met her, she followed me around and laid at my feet while I was talking to her foster mom. They don't seem drivey enough to do any of the activities I'm interested in, but I do need at least one velcro dog in my pack (Lugia is more of a shadow dog - always near me but not usually touching).

I like herders and terriers and sight hounds and spaniels and retrievers. There's a lot to choose from in those groups. I don't think I ever want multiples of the same breed again.

That terrier/herder combo is really tempting too- borderstaffs, borderjacks. I want a super compact, super drivey dog. I love Hank and would love to have something similar with a touch more drive and similar energy level.

For those of you who have a breed, do you plan on sticking to the breed you have, or would you like to try other breeds?

Both. I definitely want more Welshies, but I want to try some other breeds too.

Which breeds?

Something herdy, probably Aussie or English shepherd. I'm having a hard time deciding what I want. Border collie is also a possibility.

What makes you want to try those breeds as opposed to staying with what you have?

I love both herders and sporting dogs, and I don't want to stick with one or the other forever. I'd also like a dog who is naturally better off leash and not as prey/hunt driven, and more handler oriented.

Or vice versa, what makes you want to NOT try new breeds?

I love Welshies and they are a great fit for our family. They could be more handler oriented and better off leash (and some of them are, so that might be more of an individual dog thing), but overall they are versatile and suitable for any dog sports I could want to do. They're just super sweet fun dogs and I can't imagine owning a different sporting breed.

I will always have a GSD. Likely a young one and an older one (retired) so that I can continue doing bitesport. I don't want to train two at once.

I will also always have a smaller herder, though probably not another BC unless it's a nice shelter BC or mix. Will likely have an ACD mix, Koolie, or Aussie mix at some point from a shelter.

Like the bigger terriers, will get them as they fit into the group dynamic.

Koolies for everyone!

Koolies for life for me! But I do want to branch out to other breeds also. Mals interest me (especially if I could get an Onyx clone) along with some/many sport mixes that I end up drooling over all the time. Sometimes I find myself looking at BC's but it would have to be a very special one since I'm picky.

I also really would like to try a sighthound or lurcher one day. Borzoi, LHW, Grey/Collie?

Unless Linds figures out how to clone Traveler I will probably stick with FCRs and BCs. Maybe a Golden Retr but that's hardly branching out. Heck, a Trav-clone wouldn't be branching out...just combining a lot of my favorite traits from BCs and FCRs :)

I <3 JRTs So I will always have one. If I ever get property again I would likely get back into breeding.

However I am quite happy to branch out as long as I have one JRT at least.

I am getting a crestie, but was also interested in whippets again.

I would love a basenji (One Watson please) and am interested in ACD (One Tulsa please) Maybe a Koolie, my best friend is back and forth at least once a year but not whilst living in an apt. I might want a pap or a long haired chi some day.

I love my border collies and will probably always have one or more and don't see the need to try a different breed (okay maybe a saluki just because they are incredibly beautiful). When I don't do sports anymore I think I will just be a retirement home for ex-working sheepdogs who can't handle large properties anymore :)

I love my English Shepherd and will definitely aim to always have one (or two), but I'm also definitely interested in trying something new. I really want a LHW or SWH sometime. I also toy with the idea of a guardian breed. Not sure on that one though.

Other breeds I'd like to one day own include a Malinois and English Shepherd, plus maybe a LH Whippet, a Silken, or a Cavalier. There's a lot that I like about each of those breeds, but the reasons why vary greatly. What makes me want to try these new breeds? It's not much different from when I chose a GSD as my first breed - I like them :D And honestly, when/if I do go into these new breeds, I'd actually be making a much more informed decision than I did when I chose GSDs lol.

I'm a general dog lover not a specific breed lover, so there are a lot of breeds I want. I will likely always have a mix of breeds at any one time. :)

Noooo you're not supposed to encourage me.
You should talk to Amanda sometime, I know she's shared photos of her friend's Malinois pulling carts with her ACD! I'm FB friends with her friend, too, and they have so much fun ;)

MALINOIS!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha well, it's become a much bigger likelihood than it was before. It still depends on a few important things, but NextPermaDog could be a Mal

If I jump into the breed without fostering first, it would preferably be an adult dog from a breeder or rescue I trust, and a good fit. But I mean, if I come across an amazing Malinois like that, I'm going to have a hard time saying no...

I will most likely be sticking with "my" breed.

I can't ever see NOT having a Retriever. Whether that happens to be a Chessie or Lab (or any of the others) remains to be seen, but I will always have one. I'll honestly probably "cycle" through them so I end up having a Chessie and Labrador at the same time. I think the only breed I'd be tempted to stray away from Retrievers for would be the right Rottweiler. I've always wanted a big ol' male Rottie. And maybe one day I will, who knows.

I will likely be living with other breed(s), as Michael gets to pick his own dogs, and he prefers the GSD type mixes. And if we ever end up with property and livestock, I'd LOVE to have a Spanish Mastiff as a LGD.

And, of course, dogs have a habit of just falling into our laps when we're least expecting, so who knows what we'll end up with in the future...but if I have my way, there will always be a Retriever around.

Yes to both. I can't imagine not having a Brittany around. I wish that more Brittanys were like Rowan, but I really like your "typical" Brittany too, so that's okay.

But I like variety. I have five thousand other breeds I want to try. Aussies, English Shepherds, Tollers, Koolies, Silkens, GSDs, Ibizans, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Samoyeds...

Maybe Field Spaniels, Borzoi, Goldens, English Cockers, Chessies, Dobes, Tervuren, Cardigans, Vizslas, Finnish Lapphunds...

I want to have poodles again, too. Standards and/or miniatures. One lifetime is not long enough for all of the dogs. :(

Reasons NOT to venture away from my current breed? Well, that's what I did with Riff, and look how that turned out :p To be fair that was less about breed and more about being picky about the individual. And god knows I love him, he's just not what I wanted.

I have a feeling I'll find a breed or two that are "mine", and then have a variety outside of that.
