Do you like to keep a specific "type" of dog?

Working, herding, and sighthounds. With big chunks of each group removed.

So no.

I typically dislike terriers, except JRTs and bully breeds.

This is what I ultimately like as well. I want a dog who is eager to learn, a quick learner, good at sports and fun to train, but ultimately I just want a nice, take anywhere, do anything, happy, friendly, easy to live with but up for whatever, steady dog that is good with people, other dogs, etc. Basically, I like a Lassie dog that I can also have fun dabbling in sports with.

I used to think I wanted a bit of a crazy and something that ultimately excelled in sports and whatnot. But no. I am a calm, quiet person and I just want a dog that wants to hang out and be a good pet and then go play sports/games when it suits me haha. Journey fits the bill completely.
Yep, all this 100%.

And as far as terriers go, my friend is on her third JRT and they have all been great little dogs. A little nuts in a flying-squirrel-on-crack kind of way, but friendly, happy, go places, good dogs. But yeah, in general terriers are not my thing. I had schnauzers growing up and they were good dogs, but not go anywhere easy dogs.

I go back and forth on whether I like terriers or not. :lol-sign:

There are so many posts on here swearing I'd never have one and that rat terriers are my least favorite breed.....

Some sort of irony there.

No really, I like terriers. It just took me a while to warm up to the idea. There's a lot of fun there to be had. Usually very playful and have quite a bit of drive. Also kind of jerks.

My terrier is a good dog!

Though to be fair my dog friends often comment about how Hank is much nicer than 'real terriers'. :p
Oh, my terriers are perfect (and I think everyone should love them and want them) but they have their quirks that make them not my my exact definition of a good pet dog. We had our friend stay at the house with them while we went out of state and even though he's over at our house 2-3x a week and KNOWS our dogs, he was overwhelmed and exhausted by the end of the five days.

My three (byb) JRTs were not nice dogs. One hated all people, two just hated kids and none of them were great with other dogs. That's the only reason I wanted to try a different group of dogs, but I fell in love with JRTs originally because I know how awesome they can be.

JRTs are the best. :D

Not that I'm biased or anything...

(but yeah, I would not recommend them for someone who wants a good "pet" dog)

JRT are on my short list! :D

I feel like Hank would be a good pet dog for a lot of people but maybe my meter is broken. He's very dog and people friendly. Loads upon loads of energy but nice off switch. My only qualms are the bitey-ness and the fact he can climb trees and 6+ feet walls.

I just don't like them, because, as a whole, they are the "walk on the other side of the street so I or my dog doesn't get bitten" sort. I RUN from Fox Terriers in particular. Want nothing to do with them. One was blatantly trying to attack TCG's dog, Percy, while I was walking him and the owner was all "SHES FRIENDLY! FRIENDLY! PLAYS WITH ALL THE DOGS!"

Individual terriers? YES. Love. Ones with good temperament and training.
