I'm just curious how many people have plans for their pets if something were to happen to them.

I don't have a lot of cash to "leave" to my dogs, so I have a life insurance policy for a 100K. I'm going to be picking up another one for 75K soon, bc I'm planning on getting a corgi in the next year or so. And then next year I have a $150K APB offer comming up on my life policies that I am going to take.

I want to set up a trust for them, but I don't have the money to do so right now. So until I can, my brother is the ben on my policies. I trust him to do what I ask with the money, and actually take care of my dogs.

If I just get sick(and have to go to the hospital), my bother will watch the dogs, but that's not quite the same as having to take care of them for the rest of their lives.

So do you have plans?

I have no idea. I think my sister would prob take Goober... and I'd hope a Chazzer would be willing to take Bamm since I don't think my family could handle him or take care of him the way I do... i.e better quality food, limited vaccines, training, etc etc

eta: thats only if i were to die though. If I were in the hospital or something... my roommate would prob take care of both of them. She's done it before when I was in the hospital after my accident

I wish I had the money to set up trusts, but it just isn't an option right now.

With Tristan, I have told my parents the people who I would want him offered to first as a freebie; people who know him well and who I trust to care for him. If they aren't in a position to take him, he would be sold. He's a great horse, and I have no doubt he would do wonderfully with a new owner.

With Meg, my parents have first dibs on keeping her. They adore her and she loves them, but I'm not entirely certain how she would handle a life with less activity than I give her. I suspect she would do fine, but if it was too much for them, she would be rehomed by my friend who runs the rescue that found her for me. I have a dozen people who I know would want her, and I trust my friend to screen them for the best possible match. After all, she picked Meg for me;).

My dogs are willed to my niece because I know she would take care of them, and if something should happen to me before she is 18, I know my sister would be OK with Phoebe having them. :)

I keep $2,000.00 set aside for Raja's emergencies normally, though it has currently been reduced to $1,000.00 since my boss decided to declare bankruptcy, and I'm now job hunting. But it will get back up to 2k, and my cousin would take Raja for me if I died, and my aunt and uncle would take my cats.

Tom goes to PWCorgi if something happens and I couldn't keep him, along with whatever I can possibly give her so that he isn't a financial burden.

The girls.. I don't know. I really don't. I want them to stay together, as they are so dependant on one another, but no one who would take Emma would take Chili, too. Their futures are up in the air if something happens to both my mother and I.

Middie would go to Cristy if something happened to me (if she wants him) - she has first dibs, always. I trust her more than anyone I know to take care of Middie, and he absolutely adores her. If she couldn't take him or didn't want him, then my neighbors would have second pick, and if they refused, any chazzer I know well who wants him would be next. If no one here wanted him, he'd go to FOHA because I trust them to find him a good home - he's such a love, even though he's black I think someone would fall madly in love with him and adopt him.

My parents would take Duke if I passed away. Even though I live with my boyfriend and his dog. Duke would not be happy with him and he would not be happy with Duke. This way going to my parents well more so my dad I know it might not be as great for him as it was being with me but the next best thing would be my dad.

Nope... I don't know anyone who would be willing to take in Belle and Beezer. Brian's parents definitely not, my dad definitely not, and my mom just does not have the space for them nor would she be able to handle them.

So I honestly don't know what would happen to them. Maybe margie would look after them until a suitable home could be found but she owns a store and works... A LOT so it's not fair to the dogs or her to ask her to take them on.

Tia and Tinker will go to my mom and dad. Amos, Lola and Sophie will go to my friend Sue who I trust with all my heart and soul. I have a trust set up for all of them and have calculated in food (Sophie is VERY expensive to feed), medical, both routine and emergency and home care $$ for Sue to be able to leave them (travel) if she needs to. Of course if Mike is still around, he would be available so that he and Sue could cover for each other too.
I've also given everyone files on their routines, food and everything else they'd need to know in order to make their transition less disruptive and their lives the best possible.
I've had a few circumstances in my life where I've questioned if I'd be able to stick around...this causes you to be a bit over prepared.:p

Kyrie would go back to her breeder. She's too big that I honestly don't know anyone who would take her, and I'm sure my breeder would want her back so she could keep her(she was planning on keeping her) or rehome her.

Regis would go to Travis of course, if not, probably to my Dad. I haven't discussed this with my Dad, but my Dad loves Regis(heck even my anti-dog mother loves Regis) so I know he would take him.

Sad, but good topic. Makes me realize I should plan for something, just in case.

If something happens to me, then Summer goes to my parents without a doubt. If something happens to them, then I get all the kids, dogs, chinchilla, etc. If something happens to all of us, then the paps would go to their breeder and Trey would go with them, without a doubt. It's nice to have a good relationship with your breeder. I know she would as she has taken back (permanently) a dog whose owner is having a really tough time right now.

I pretty much know Lily is going to outlive me. She is only 21 months old, so her life is just beginning and I am at a place in my life where I know there is not a lot of time left for me. I have 2 daughters that said they would take her for me. She would have to move from FL. to PA, though... quite a change in climate, but I guess she would adjust.

I feel sort of relieved that I probably won't have to see her die, unless she would get ill or have an accident,of course,.... but then I know that I am her whole world and she will grieve for me and will not understand when I am just suddenly not there. It breaks my heart to think of that scenario more
than if I had to see her pass on. At least I could understand what was going on... gee, what a depressing thread this is! :lol-sign:

I honestly don't have any concrete plans in place, though I know I really should. I know when I die I want whatever I have (probably $20 and a lint ball, lol) to go to some animal related organization, the majority of it to CorgiAid.

I do know that I don't want Izzy or Frodo to stay with any of my family, especially my mom. Izzy wouldn't be hard to find a new home for at all and would adapt fine as long as she had some kind of mental and physical outlet, I just worry that my mom would give her to the first schmuck who wants her.

A long time ago Renee said she would take Frodo, she may have been kidding but I'm holding her to it! :p
No, he's the one I lose sleep over about this. I don't know if a rescue would take him and I don't know that I'd feel comfortable rehoming him to any ordinary person. Darn you paean for making me think about this stuff, LOL!

Inky would probably go to my sister (who told me last week when she gets an apartment she'll take him. Hah! Fat chance biotch!) to gain 20 pounds chowing down on Meow Mix until he dies from a UTI since she won't change a litter box or check regularly to make sure that he's going. Fun, fun

yeah, thinking about this isn't fun.... but then when you hear about dogs whose owners have died in an accident or something and they end up in a crappy shelter bc no one could care for them it's just really sad.

My bother and one of my sisters are the only ones in my family that I trust to take care of my dogs. But, my bother is the only one I trust to put the money I'm leaving them to good use. When I have a trust set up, that won't be as much of an issue bc the trust will only allow the money to be spent on certain things.

My dogs are both older so I think that 50k each is more than enough to cover them. I'm getting an extra 75K before I get the corgi bc I think that since I'm getting a puppy s/he will need more if something were to happen to me.

Then one year from this Jan I will add an additional 150K for them... so if it came down to it, and someone couldn't take them bc they didn't have a place to live they have plenty to care for my dogs AND be able to keep them by either renting or putting a down payment on a house. So obviously, there is NO excuse for them to not care for my dogs until they pass naturally.

I also have 50K that's just for incidentals, like my funeral. Which def won't cost that much, so they'll prob end up with some money from that too.

Dr2: I see nothing wrong with being prepared(about anything). People who have these things figured out have an easier time if something *does* happen. It's families that haven't thought about it that have the hard time.

The only thing that I think sucks... is if you're someone like me... your worth more dead than alive! :rofl1: :rofl1:

Yes, Blaze will either go back to his breeder or go to my trainer. People I COMPLTELY trust in every aspect of his life. :)

Lizzie, she will just stay with my parents. They know her quirks and take good care of her.

Lucy would go to my husband's parents. They love dogs, and while they may not spend the time or money on Lucy that we would, I know she'd be loved and well taken care of--and in my absence, that's all I can ask for.

Yep. If something were to happen to me both of my girls would go back to their breeder, or ownership would be transferred over to my mom. More than likely the latter. :)

I have COPD. While I am not expecting to kick off any time soon, it would be unrealistic to think I might outlive this healthy, precious, little dog, unless they come up with some magic cure real soon. I get around fairly well, but I just don't look too far into the future....

My mom would obviously keep all the dogs. And my brother would help take care of them. Though, they probably wouldn't be happy. I am the one that spends the most time with them, take them to the dog park and for walks. I am the one that pestered my mom into buying a higher quality food .But I know she would stick with Kirkland cause she has noticed the difference.

Cats, my mom again would take care of them with help from my brother.

Bunnies, rats, mouse, hamster-They would end up at the SPCA most likely. My brother would probably look for a rescue to take them. I should leave a list of rescues that know me, so he could get in contact with them if something happened.

Turtles-I honestly don't know. My brother feeds my RES, but he wouldn't take him out to sunbathe, or let him swim in the pond, or change his tank water... And my box turtle would probably be forgotten as she lives outside in her pen and my brother and mom don't even go in that part of the yard.

I really need to right some stuff down for them if something happened to me. Not that I think anything would. I don't really do much lol.

If something happened to my mom (Which everyone was worrying about when he had surgery..she had lists written out, and where to find all her legal documents, life insurance, etc) then I would be able to take care of everyone. Me and her are really the primary care givers. My brother knows the dogs and cats names, and says hi to them on occasion, but he doesn't know anything else about them (Their age, where they came from, medical issues).

If something happened to all of us...honestly, i don't even like to think about that. They would all end up at the SPCA most likely. My friend's couldn't take all of them, maybe one dog and that would only cover 3-4 dogs. I really don't even want to think about that, its making me nervous just thinking about it.
